Book excerpt: Traditionalists postulate an all-loving, all-powerful God who has revealed Himself in His inspired, inerrant Word. Since His Word speaks of hell, questions about hell in the final analysis are not philosophical but hermeneutical. Bible interpretation, properly done, provides ready answers for such life-and-death debates. We should not practice eisegesis, reading into the text what our philosophical penchant may be, but exegesis, getting out of the biblical text what the original author put in. Understanding the following elements will allay any fears of God being unjust when consigning unrepentant sinners to hell: 1. the duration of life 2. the definition of death 3. the description of hell Non-traditionalists claim God is neither just nor loving if He tortures everyone in hell forever regardless of the life they lived. They are offended by such an idea and believe God is too. Rather than jettison the doctrine of eternal punishment at the expense of biblical fidelity the author inserts into the debate an idea that undergirds God’s justice while maintaining the traditional doctrine of hell. Hofer rejects the notion victims at Auschwitz suffer the same fate as the madman who dispatched them there. That is offensive to God.

Book excerpt: It's 1969, and Claire and Jack's first encounter results in an unwanted pregnancy. Married at sixteen, Claire's naïveté leaves her unprepared to deal with Jack's infidelity and controlling personality. She harbors pain and resentment deep inside for years but vows never to leave in order to keep her family together. But in 2001, a sudden stroke claims Jack's life and sends Claire into a mental breakdown. Fueled by insecurity and fear, Claire makes the fateful decision to leave her family—three children and four grandchildren—believing they will be better off without her. Four years later, just when her family is starting to heal, Claire comes back, healed and eager to make amends. The lives of her children—Sarah, Danni, and Joe—are turned upside down once again, as they must decide whether to forgive their mother and forge a new relationship or move on with their lives as though she no longer exists. Michele Vargo's Shades of Sin will keep you reading into the wee hours of the night, wondering how Sarah, Danni, and Joe will receive their estranged mother's homecoming. You'll find that second chances just may be given, even in the midst of the many Shades of Sin.

Book excerpt: Romans is largely regarded as the theological standard among New Testament writings, as well as the clearest and most systematic presentation of Christian doctrine in all the Bible. Its influence on figures such as Augustine, Luther, and Calvin have been well documented, with Calvin referring to it as the singular key to understanding all of Scripture. In Shades of Grace, the first in his New Kingdom series, pastor and author Marc Simon offers both an original translation of Paul’s letter to the Romans, as well as a fresh commentary on the letter itself. His spirited approach to the Pauline corpus conveys both the depth and simplicity of Paul’s writing, and combines the author’s careful scholarship and spiritual insight with lucid commentary, background information, and explanatory notes on key terms used by Paul in his letters. The introduction to the commentary highlights the authorship, occasion, purpose, and contents of Romans, as well as Paul’s unique understanding of Israel’s God as the Father, Lord, and Spirit of creation. The author follows the introduction with a verse-by-verse exposition of the text, which is at once accessible to scholars, pastors, and students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The path to paradise begins in hell." ― Dante Alighieri On a small path leading to nowhere sits a looming cathedral, once-abandoned, now hosting the most dangerous of pleasures. And Stone Brice is the most dangerous of all: Lust. A former acrobat, Stone's life was changed dramatically after an accident, and now he runs The Carnal Tower, a place where people can go to have their deepest and sometimes darkest fantasies realized. Stone is a man who is rarely taken by surprise, so when he meets the artist, August Ashley, he doesn't expect to trip and fall at his feet-literally. But there's something about the quiet stranger in the park that Stone wants to take apart, and that feeling only gets worse the more Stone gets to know him. Stone is well aware he can't mix business and pleasure, but when August comes to him with a proposal for a trade-seven paintings for seven nights with Lust-he can't say no. Not when it means he'll be able to have August exactly the way he wants him-even if it's just for a week. Stone has every plan to strip August down to his very soul, but the longer the week goes on, the more Stone comes to realize that August might very well be his undoing. Shades of Lust is the first book in a new series. It features a bi-awakening, high heat, low angst, and the human embodiment of a seven deadly sin whose sole purpose is to make sure his client never forgets their week at The Carnal Tower. Each book in the series can stand on their own, and all contain no cheating, and a happily ever after.

Book excerpt: This work explores the construction of sin as a religious concept in ancient Israel by examining the dominant metaphors used to express the idea in the Hebrew Bible. Building on insights regarding metaphor derived from recent studies in linguistics and philosophy of language, the book identifies and describes four major patterns of metaphors for sin that permeate the biblical texts: sin viewed as a burden carried by the sinner; sin portrayed as an account kept by God in heaven; sin depicted as a path or direction in which one travels; and sin described as a stain or impurity in need of removal.

Book excerpt: Torn from his parents as a small child in the 1870s, Stephen Mzamane is picked by the Anglican church to train at the Missionary College in Canterbury and then returned to southern Africa's Cape Colony to be a preacher. He is a brilliant success, but troubles stalk him: his unresolved relationship with his family and people, the condescension of church leaders towards their own native pastors, and That Woman-seen once in a photograph and never forgotten. And now he has to find his mother and take her a message that will break her heart. In this raw and compelling story, Marguerite Poland employs her considerable experience as a writer and specialist in South African languages to recreate the polarised, duplicitous world of Victorian colonialism and its betrayal of the very people it claimed to be enlightening.
