He argues that there are varying conditions of correctness which determine whether words express a given concept, and thus that meaning does not determine truth conditions. The implications of this view are intriguing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fast-moving, candid, conversational, and entertaining memoir, Harold Prince, the most honored director in the history of the American theater (22 Tony Awards and counting), looks back over his 70-year (and counting!) career. Featuring original material from Contradictions: Notes on Twenty-Six Years in the Theatre, Prince provides a fresh, new perspective on his writing from the vantage point of today. Sense of Occasion gives an insider's recollection of the making of such landmark musicals as West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera, with Prince's perceptive comments about his mentor George Abbott and his many celebrated collaborators, including Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, John Kander, Boris Aronson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Angela Lansbury, Elizabeth Taylor, Zero Mostel, Carol Burnett, and Joel Grey. As well as detailing his titanic successes that changed the form and content of the American musical theater, Prince even-handedly reflects on the shows that didn't work, most memorably and painfully Merrily We Roll Along. Throughout, he offers insights into the way business is conducted on Broadway, drawing sharp contrasts between past and present. This thoughtful, complete account of one of the most legendary and long-lived careers in theater history, written by the man who lived it, is an essential work of personal and professional recollection.

David Kay published articles on various subjects and was one of the sub-editors on the eighth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica. After writing an article on mnemonics he became very interested in the subject of memory. He had already published a title in 1888, Memory: What It Is, and How to Improve It, and this volume was intended to build on that discussion. A great opportunity to read one of the early discussions on human memory.

Book excerpt: What is it about irony - as an object of serious philosophical reflection and a literary technique of considerable elasticity - that makes it an occasion for endless critical debate? This book responds to that question by focusing on several key moments in German romanticism and its afterlife in twentieth-century French thought and writing. Rather than provide a history of irony, it examines particular occasions of ironic disruption, thus offering an alternative model for conceiving of historical occurrences and their potential for acquiring meaning.

This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to devise a method for approaching the problem of presence in Hellenistic and Roman poetry. The problem of presence, as defined here, is the problem of the availability or accessibility to the reader of the fictional worlds disclosed by poetry. From Callimachus’ Hymns to the Odes of Horace, poets of this era repeatedly challenge readers by beckoning them to explore fictive spaces which are at once familiar and otherworldly, realms of the imagination which are nevertheless firmly rooted in the lived reality of the poets and their contemporaries. We too, when we read these poems, may feel simultaneously a sense of being transported to a world apart and of being seized upon by the poem’s address in the here and now of reading. The fiction of occasion is proposed as a new conceptual tool for understanding how these poems produce such problematic presences and what varieties of experience they make possible for their readers. The fiction of occasion is defined as a phenomenon whereby a poem is fictionally framed as part of a material event or ‘occasion’ with which the reader is invited to engage through the medium of the senses. The book explores this concept through close readings of key authors from the corpus of first-person poetry written in Greek and Latin between the 3rd century BCE and the 1st century CE, with a focus on Callimachus, Bion, Catullus, Propertius, and Horace. The ultimate purpose of these readings is to move towards developing a new vocabulary for conceptualising ancient poetry as an embodied experience.

This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a Festschrift for the 90th birthday of the physicist Pierre Noyes. The book is a representative selection of papers on the topics that have been central to the meetings over the last three decades of ANPA, the Alternative Natural Philosophy Association. ANPA was founded by Pierre Noyes and his colleagues the philosopher-linguist-physicist Frederick Parker-Rhodes, the physicist Ted Bastin, and the mathematicians Clive Kilmister, John Amson. Many of the topics in the book center on the combinatorial hierarchy discovered by the originators of ANPA. Other topics explore geometrical, cosmological and biological aspects of those ideas, and foundational aspects related to discrete physics and emergent quantum mechanics. The book will be useful to readers interested in fundamental physics, and particularly to readers looking for new and important viewpoints in Science that contain the seeds of futurity. Contents:Unital Homogeneous Polynomial Operators on Hilbert Space (John C Amson)Towards a Generalised Combinatorial Hierarchy (Keith G Bowden)Quantum Cosmology and Special Mersenne Primes (Geoffrey F Chew)BiEntropy — the Measurement and Algebras of Order and Disorder in Finite Binary Strings (Grenville J Croll)Constraints Theory Brief (Anthony M Deakin)An Elegance First Approach to looking for the Universe in Finite Geometry (Herb Doughty)Boolean Geometry and Non-boolean Change (Thomas Etter)Speculation on Consciousness as Relative Existence (Louis Gidney)A Management View of ANPA (East) 1979 to 2012 (Michael Horner)Critical Stability of Few-Body Systems (V A Karmanov and J Carbonell)Non-Commutative Worlds and Classical Constraints (Louis H Kauffman)Report on ANPA to the ANPA Advisory Board, 2008 (Clive W Kilmister)Reflections on Fundamentals and Foundations of Physics (James Lindesay)Ordering Operators (David McGoveran)Information, Entropy, and the Combinatorial Hierarchy: Calculations (Michael Manthey and Douglas Matzke)Spacetime, Dirac and Bit-Strings (G N Ord)Fractal Large-Scale Structure in the Universe (D F Roscoe)A Dual Space as the Basis of Quantum Mechanics and Other Aspects of Physics (Peter Rowlands)Discrete Motion and the Emergence of Space and Time (Richard Shoup)Expanding–Contracting Universes (Irving Stein)Development of a New Approach to Systems Biology and Therapy Design (Fredric S Young) Readership: Researchers in mathematical physics, theoretical physics and history of science. Key Features:The book is unique as a collection of basic papers in the study of the combinatorial hierarchy and discrete physics. We mention particularly that it contains contributions by a number of very well-known physicists and mathematiciansThere are a number of ground-breaking topics — including work relating quantum mechanics and discrete and geometrical physics, and new approaches to the combinatorial hierarchy using topos theoryFinally, the papers are for the most part self-contained expositions available to advanced undergraduates and researchers in both continuous and discrete theoretical physicsKeywords:Theoretical Physics;Nuclear Physics;Combinatorics;Hierarchies;Boolean Geometry;Finite Geometries;Bitstrings;Cosmology;Tensors;Operators;Categories;Systems Biology;Entropy;Few-Body Systems;Critical Stability;Mersenne Primes

Book excerpt: BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A novel that follows a middle-aged man as he contends with a past he never much thought about—until his closest childhood friends return with a vengeance: one of them from the grave, another maddeningly present. A novel so compelling that it begs to be read in a single setting, The Sense of an Ending has the psychological and emotional depth and sophistication of Henry James at his best, and is a stunning achievement in Julian Barnes's oeuvre. Tony Webster thought he left his past behind as he built a life for himself, and his career has provided him with a secure retirement and an amicable relationship with his ex-wife and daughter, who now has a family of her own. But when he is presented with a mysterious legacy, he is forced to revise his estimation of his own nature and place in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentimentalism, Ethics and the Culture of Feeling defends feeling against customary distrust or condescension by showing that the affective turn of the eighteenth-century cult of sentiment, despite its sometimes surreal manifestations, has led to a positive culture of feeling. The very reaction against sentimentalism has taught us to identity sentimentality. Fiction, moreover, remains a principal means not just of discriminating quality of feeling but of appreciating its essentially imaginative nature.
