Book excerpt: Education is the process of developing the capacities and potentials of the individual so as to prepare that individual to be successful in a specific society or culture. From this perspective, education is serving primarily as an individual development function. Education begins at birth and continues throughout life. It is constant and on going. Schooling generally begins some where between the ages four and six when children are gathered together for the purposes of specific guidance related to skills and competencies that society deems important. In the past, once the formal primary and secondary schooling was completed the process was finished. However, in today’s information age, adults are quite often learning in informal setting throughout their working lives and even into retirement.

Book excerpt: Self-regulated learning is recognized as one of the most essential skills that students should possess in this information age. Nevertheless, most students are accustomed to the conventional teacher-centered way of learning, thus, they are not competent at self-regulated learning. A Self-Management Tool was developed to guide and enhance students' usage of self-regulated learning strategies. The tool comprises three components; Information-Management Tool, Personal-Management Tool and a Teacher's Manual. A quasi-experimental study was conducted to test its effectiveness and the details of this empirical research were documented in this monograph. The monograph is divided into six chapters, with detailed descriptions on the research methodology. The Self-Management Tool was found to be effective in improving students' self-regulated learning. The findings have significant research and educational implications. Recommendations for future research are included in the final chapter of the monograph.

Book excerpt: The present work aims to highlight the important role of psychological variables like self-esteem, self-efficacy, and achievement motivation for college success. Researchers have found that there exists a strong positive correlation between students’ self-esteem and their self-efficacy. It means the students who have higher self-esteem, also feel confident about their abilities. All those students who regard themselves to be worthy, also are very confident about themselves in particular tasks. As far as achievement motivation is concerned, researches show that there is a weak, yet positive correlation between self-esteem and achievement motivation, and a positive relation between self-efficacy and achievement motivation. Moreover, it has also been observed that all those students who have high self-efficacy, also had high achievement motivation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underachievement continues to be a concern for teachers, planners and administrators throughout most states in India. Most students have the desire to be successful in school; yet many do not know how (Heacox, 1991). Moreover, among children, many fail to reach the academic level of which they are capable and quite often their school performance is constantly lower than that of their ability peers (Terman and Oden, 1947; Burt, 1962; Pringle, 1970; Whitemore, 1980; Gallagher,1985). Underachievement appears to be a common phenomenon in the India's educational system.

Book excerpt: This book explores the role of identity in adolescent foreign language learning to provide evidence that an identity-focused approach can make a difference to achievement in education. It uses both in-depth exploratory interviews with language learners and a cross-sectional survey to provide a unique glimpse into the identity dynamics that learners need to manage in their interaction with contradictory relational contexts (e.g. teacher vs. classmates; parents vs. friends), and that appear to impair their perceived competence and declared achievement in language learning. Furthermore, this work presents a new model of identity which incorporates several educational psychology theories (e.g. self-discrepancy, self-presentation, impression management), developmental theories of adolescence and principles of foreign language teaching and learning. This book gives rise to potentially policy-changing insights and will be of importance to those interested in the relationship between self, identity and language teaching and learning.

This value influences Chinese students to have high academic achievement. Unfortunately, students with low academic self-efficacy should motivate themselves to study. There were few researchers to examine the relationship between filial piety, self-efficacy and motivation. The present research explores and examines the model of these three variables. 285 participants have been invited to finish the questionnaire. AMS-C28 motivation scale, MJSES self-efficacy scale and filial piety belief scale have been used in the study. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION In this era, every family is worried about the academic achievement (AA) of their children, especially Indian families try to maintain healthy home environment (HE) to accelerate their children's AA. The self-concept (SC) is also one of the important factors contributing to the development of personality and boosting AA. SC, along with the psychological atmosphere at home, influences the AA. Hence, the present research was planned to investigate the effect of HE, family types (FT), and SC on AA of the students. Both, HE and SC will largely contribute to acceleration of adolescents' AA. The way person has been raised, his elementary, secondary and advanced education, his friends, his religion, his political group, his neighborhood, all may hold or hinder his AA. The environmental influence starts very early in lifetime, that is, right from the perinatal developmental stage of the child. Home is the most important part of the environment, where child is brought up and spends years of his/her life. When the child starts going to school, he/she is there only for a part of time, spending only few hours there in studying, while spends rest of the time at the home. Home is the beginning point of individual's life and various factors associated with the HE may affect or influence AA of the child. Besides, socioeconomic status of the family, some of the HE factors were found to have an impact on AA of the child: the attitude of the parents towards the education of child and kind of relations among family members (Samul,1986),
