Book Synopsis Selected Unsolved Problems in Coding Theory by : David Joyner
Download or read book Selected Unsolved Problems in Coding Theory written by David Joyner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an original mode of presentation, and emphasizing the computational nature of the subject, this book explores a number of the unsolved problems that still exist in coding theory. A well-established and highly relevant branch of mathematics, the theory of error-correcting codes is concerned with reliably transmitting data over a ‘noisy’ channel. Despite frequent use in a range of contexts, the subject still contains interesting unsolved problems that have resisted solution by some of the most prominent mathematicians of recent decades. Employing Sage—a free open-source mathematics software system—to illustrate ideas, this book is intended for graduate students and researchers in algebraic coding theory. The work may be used as supplementary reading material in a graduate course on coding theory or for self-study.
Book Synopsis Information Theory and Network Coding by : Raymond W. Yeung
Download or read book Information Theory and Network Coding written by Raymond W. Yeung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-10 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an evolution from my book A First Course in Information Theory published in 2002 when network coding was still at its infancy. The last few years have witnessed the rapid development of network coding into a research ?eld of its own in information science. With its root in infor- tion theory, network coding has not only brought about a paradigm shift in network communications at large, but also had signi?cant in?uence on such speci?c research ?elds as coding theory, networking, switching, wireless c- munications, distributeddatastorage, cryptography, andoptimizationtheory. While new applications of network coding keep emerging, the fundamental - sults that lay the foundation of the subject are more or less mature. One of the main goals of this book therefore is to present these results in a unifying and coherent manner. While the previous book focused only on information theory for discrete random variables, the current book contains two new chapters on information theory for continuous random variables, namely the chapter on di?erential entropy and the chapter on continuous-valued channels. With these topics included, the book becomes more comprehensive and is more suitable to be used as a textbook for a course in an electrical engineering department.
Book Synopsis Coding Theorems of Information Theory by : Jacob Wolfowitz
Download or read book Coding Theorems of Information Theory written by Jacob Wolfowitz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph originated with a course of lectures on information theory which I gave at Cornell University during the academic year 1958-1959. It has no pretensions to exhaustiveness, and, indeed, no pretensions at all. Its purpose is to provide, for mathematicians of some maturity, an easy introduction to the ideas and principal known theorems of a certain body of coding theory. This purpose will be amply achieved if the reader is enabled, through his reading, to read the (sometimes obscurely written) literature and to obtain results of his own. The theory is ob viously in a rapid stage of development; even while this monograph was in manuscript several of its readers obtained important new results. The first chapter is introductory and the subject matter of the monograph is described at the end of the chapter. There does not seem to be a uniquely determined logical order in which the material should be arranged. In determining the final arrangement I tried to obtain an order which makes reading easy and yet is not illogical. I can only hope that the resultant compromises do not earn me the criticism that I failed on both counts. There are a very few instances in the monograph where a stated theorem is proved by a method which is based on a result proved only later.

Book Synopsis Information Theory by : Imre Csiszár
Download or read book Information Theory written by Imre Csiszár and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information Theory: Coding Theorems for Discrete Memoryless Systems presents mathematical models that involve independent random variables with finite range. This three-chapter text specifically describes the characteristic phenomena of information theory. Chapter 1 deals with information measures in simple coding problems, with emphasis on some formal properties of Shannon’s information and the non-block source coding. Chapter 2 describes the properties and practical aspects of the two-terminal systems. This chapter also examines the noisy channel coding problem, the computation of channel capacity, and the arbitrarily varying channels. Chapter 3 looks into the theory and practicality of multi-terminal systems. This book is intended primarily for graduate students and research workers in mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science.
Book Synopsis Coding and Information Theory by : Steven Roman
Download or read book Coding and Information Theory written by Steven Roman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-06-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to information and coding theory at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. It assumes a basic knowledge of probability and modern algebra, but is otherwise self- contained. The intent is to describe as clearly as possible the fundamental issues involved in these subjects, rather than covering all aspects in an encyclopedic fashion. The first quarter of the book is devoted to information theory, including a proof of Shannon's famous Noisy Coding Theorem. The remainder of the book is devoted to coding theory and is independent of the information theory portion of the book. After a brief discussion of general families of codes, the author discusses linear codes (including the Hamming, Golary, the Reed-Muller codes), finite fields, and cyclic codes (including the BCH, Reed-Solomon, Justesen, Goppa, and Quadratic Residue codes). An appendix reviews relevant topics from modern algebra.
Book Synopsis Hiding Data - Selected Topics by : Rudolf Ahlswede
Download or read book Hiding Data - Selected Topics written by Rudolf Ahlswede and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devoted to information security, this volume begins with a short course on cryptography, mainly based on lectures given by Rudolf Ahlswede at the University of Bielefeld in the mid 1990s. It was the second of his cycle of lectures on information theory which opened with an introductory course on basic coding theorems, as covered in Volume 1 of this series. In this third volume, Shannon’s historical work on secrecy systems is detailed, followed by an introduction to an information-theoretic model of wiretap channels, and such important concepts as homophonic coding and authentication. Once the theoretical arguments have been presented, comprehensive technical details of AES are given. Furthermore, a short introduction to the history of public-key cryptology, RSA and El Gamal cryptosystems is provided, followed by a look at the basic theory of elliptic curves, and algorithms for efficient addition in elliptic curves. Lastly, the important topic of “oblivious transfer” is discussed, which is strongly connected to the privacy problem in communication. Today, the importance of this problem is rapidly increasing, and further research and practical realizations are greatly anticipated. This is the third of several volumes serving as the collected documentation of Rudolf Ahlswede’s lectures on information theory. Each volume includes comments from an invited well-known expert. In the supplement to the present volume, Rüdiger Reischuk contributes his insights. Classical information processing concerns the main tasks of gaining knowledge and the storage, transmission and hiding of data. The first task is the prime goal of Statistics. For transmission and hiding data, Shannon developed an impressive mathematical theory called Information Theory, which he based on probabilistic models. The theory largely involves the concept of codes with small error probabilities in spite of noise in the transmission, which is modeled by channels. The lectures presented in this work are suitable for graduate students in Mathematics, and also for those working in Theoretical Computer Science, Physics, and Electrical Engineering with a background in basic Mathematics. The lectures can be used as the basis for courses or to supplement courses in many ways. Ph.D. students will also find research problems, often with conjectures, that offer potential subjects for a thesis. More advanced researchers may find questions which form the basis of entire research programs.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Coding Theory by : J. H. van Lint
Download or read book Introduction to Coding Theory written by J. H. van Lint and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coding theory is still a young subject. One can safely say that it was born in 1948. It is not surprising that it has not yet become a fixed topic in the curriculum of most universities. On the other hand, it is obvious that discrete mathematics is rapidly growing in importance. The growing need for mathe maticians and computer scientists in industry will lead to an increase in courses offered in the area of discrete mathematics. One of the most suitable and fascinating is, indeed, coding theory. So, it is not surprising that one more book on this subject now appears. However, a little more justification of the book are necessary. A few years ago it was and a little more history remarked at a meeting on coding theory that there was no book available an introductory course on coding theory (mainly which could be used for for mathematicians but also for students in engineering or computer science). The best known textbooks were either too old, too big, too technical, too much for specialists, etc. The final remark was that my Springer Lecture Notes (# 201) were slightly obsolete and out of print. Without realizing what I was getting into I announced that the statement was not true and proved this by showing several participants the book Inleiding in de Coderingstheorie, a little book based on the syllabus of a course given at the Mathematical Centre in Amsterdam in 1975 (M. C. Syllabus 31).
