Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secrets of the Submarine In a conversation with the Father of Ruth lessness, Admiral von Tirpitz, as late as the year 1911, the latter remarked that he was not at all certain that submarines were an essen tial part of Germany's naval programs. The author tried to convince him to the contrary. To-day, perhaps, it is just as well for us all that he did not succeed. Possibly this book will ex plain why von Tirpitz has since changed his mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. There is no such boat in our sub marine flotilla as the X - 4. We ought to have plenty of big, fast, sea-going submarines, with plenty of big, fast sea-planes and battle-cruisers, so that if an invading army ever starts for this country we can meet it and smash it while it is cooped up on transports somewhere in mid ocean. There, and not in shallow, off-shore waters, cumbered with nets and mines, is the true battlefield of the submarine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clammer and the Submarine From the bench built against the trunk one can see many things: the harbor, and the Opposite shore, and rolling country beyond, and distant hills, and one hill in particular with a tree upon it like a cross, which stands out, at certain seasons, right against the disc of the setting sun. One can see, too, the waters of the bay beyond the harbor, and certain clam beds just at the point, and a certain water front; and other things in their season. Old Goodwin's palace on the hill is not visible, except for a glimpse of red roofs above the t0ps of the trees. There is one other thing which I almost forgot to mention, and that is a hole s000ped in the ground just without the shadow of the pine, and lined with great stones. That stone-lined hole has its uses, but the time for them is not yet. I was sitting on the seat under my old pine, gazing out but seeing noth ing of what lay before my eyes. And that was strange, too, for the harbor before me was smiling under a warm spring sun, and the hills beyond were bathed in the blue mist of summer. Indeed, it seemed like summer. There will be cold weather in plenty, with skies gray and wet. There is always more than enough of such weather in the first half of May, but that day seemed like summer. I had had hard work to realize that it was April until I looked about me and saw the grass just greening in the moist and sheltered spots, and the trees spreading their bare arms abroad. The buds were just swel ling, some of them showing a faint pale green or pink at their tips. And my garden was nothing but freshly turned brown earth, not a spear of green. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarine and Anti-Submarine Cromer, and the spirit which (however personal and diverse in its manifestations) they both drew from the nation that sent them forth Such an understanding would enable the narrator to carry us all with him, For every man of our national birth and breeding would feel, when he was told the story of such heroes, not only their superiority but their likeness to himself. 'there, ' he would say, but for lack Of fortune, or opportunity, or courage, or stature, there goes John Smith.' It is admiration which helps us to feel that, and a mean spirit which conceals it from us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarines: A List of References in the New York Public Library The destiny of the submarine is as yet but little understood by the casual reader; at the present time its introduction into the art of warfare has caused it to be condemned by many, while others look upon it as a means of defense against or a means of destroying overwhelming sea power and, perhaps, think it may be utilized to assist in extending domination over other peoples when combined with military supremacy on land. I think those who use it for any illegitimate purpose will eventually see their error. Submarine inventors have, from the earliest days, considered the sub marine boat as a means to advanced knowledge of things beneath the surface of the seas, to recover and restore to the use of mankind many of the things that have gone to the bottom of the sea in ships, and also to recover the natural products of the sea, in the nature of shell fish, sponges, coral, pearls, and to reach mineral and other deposits heretofore inaccessible and unavailable to the people. The introduction of the submarine in war will eventually prove a benefit to all of the smaller and less powerful nations, as the submarine is undoubtedly able to offer to any nation the greatest degree of security for the least expenditure of money in the defense of its coast line. Book excerpt: One of WWII's pivotal events was the capture of U-505 on June 4, 1944. The top secret seizure of this massive Type IX submarine provided the Allies with priceless information on German technology and innovation. After the war U-505 was transported to Chicago, where today 1,000,000 visitors a year pass through her at the Museum of Science and Industry. Hunt and Kill offers the first definitive study of U-505. The chapters cover her construction, crew and commanders, combat history, general Type IX operations, naval intelligence, the eight fatal German mistakes that doomed the boat, and her capture, transportation, and restoration for posterity. The contributors to this fascinating volume--a Who's Who of U-boat historians--include: Erich Topp (U-Boat Ace, commander of U-552); Eric Rust (Naval Officers Under Hitler); Timothy Mulligan (Neither Sharks Nor Wolves); Jak Mallman Showell (Hitler's U-boat Bases); Jordan Vause (Wolf); Lawrence Patterson (First U-boat Flotilla); Mark Wise (Enigma and the Battle of the Atlantic); Keith Gill (Curator, Museum of Science and Industry), and Theodore Savas (Silent Hunters; Nazi Millionaries).
