Book Synopsis Free from Civilization by : Enrico Manicardi
Download or read book Free from Civilization written by Enrico Manicardi and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In clear, impassioned prose, Enrico Manicardi analyzes the evils of our age from their genesis. This or that economic, technological or cultural model is not to blame for our current crisis; the blame lies with economics, technology and culture as such. It is the ideology of fear that makes us afraid. It is the mentality of domination that jeopardizes all of our relationships. In short, the problem is civilization. Through its oppressive classes, values and processes that pervade everyone's life, civilization domesticates us, weakens our perceptiveness and distances us from the living world. We must radically change our way of thinking, feeling and behaving before it's too late-we must dam the flood of devitalization that is washing over us, and return to our wilder natures, both inside and outside ourselves. Manicardi's appeal is crystal clear: if we are to survive we must begin to search inside ourselves, not to celebrate the distant past as if it were a cult, but to return to ourselves, to grip life with our own two hands, and build upon that earlier ecocentric conscience which once held the place of the egocentric conscience now leading us astray. Enrico Manicardi was born in 1966 and is a member of La Scintilla, the Society for Libertarian Culture of Modena. A lawyer and founder of the antiauthoritarian media project "Infection," he has also played guitar and written music for an eponymous band since the 1980s. His lifelong wish has been to live in a free, radically off-kilter, ecologically sound world, one characterized by warm, spontaneous, non-hierarchical relationships rather than those consecrated by the cult of technology. Troubled by the way people have succumbed to a civilization that estranges, domesticates and regulates everything and everyone, he continues to protest against the modern world's project to enslave us. This book augurs the rise of an increasingly harmonious chorus loud enough to put an end to that project.
Download or read book The Leaving written by Tara Altebrando and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six were taken. Eleven years later, five come back--with no idea of where they've been. A riveting mystery for fans of We Were Liars. Eleven years ago, six kindergartners went missing without a trace. After all that time, the people left behind moved on, or tried to. Until today. Today five of those kids return. They're sixteen, and they are . . . fine. Scarlett comes home and finds a mom she barely recognizes, and doesn't really recognize the person she's supposed to be, either. But she thinks she remembers Lucas. Lucas remembers Scarlett, too, except they're entirely unable to recall where they've been or what happened to them. Neither of them remember the sixth victim, Max--the only one who hasn't come back. Which leaves Max's sister, Avery, wanting answers. She wants to find her brother--dead or alive--and isn't buying this whole memory-loss story. But as details of the disappearance begin to unfold, no one is prepared for the truth. This unforgettable novel--with its rich characters, high stakes, and plot twists--will leave readers breathless.

Book Synopsis Faith, Love, Hope and Popular Romance Fiction by : Laura Vivanco
Download or read book Faith, Love, Hope and Popular Romance Fiction written by Laura Vivanco and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith, Love, Hope and Popular Romance Fiction explores romance novels from a theological perspective and suggests a new definition of the romance novel to complement other definitions which focus on structural elements: "modern popular romances are novels whose authors have assumed pastoral roles, offering hope to their readers through works which propagate faith in the goodness and durability of love." Part one outlines how romance authors offer hope and pastoral care to their readers through works which propagate faith in the goodness and durability of love. Part two explores aspects of faith, hope, love and pastoral care in more detail: words and power; the different "faith" traditions in the precursors to the modern romance; what it means to hope for a "prince" as saviour; damnation as the absence of love, and metaphorical devils and hells; false or damaging forms of love and how to discern them.
Book Synopsis Jeanette Winterson by : Susana Onega
Download or read book Jeanette Winterson written by Susana Onega and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of Jeanette Winterson’s complete oeuvre, offering detailed analysis of her nine novels as well as addressing her non-fiction and minor fictional work. Susana Onega combines the study of formal issues such as narrative structure, perspective and point of view with thematic analyses approached from a variety of theoretical perspectives, from narratology and feminist theory to Hermetic and Kabalistic symbolism, to provide a comprehensive ‘vertical’ analysis of Winterson’s novels. Onega reveals the books as complex linguistic artefacts, crammed with intertextual echoes. She demonstrates the inseparability of form and meaning within Winterson’s work, and positions her within the wider context of contemporary British fiction alongside fellow visionaries such as Peter Ackroyd, Maureen Duffy and Marina Warner.
Download or read book The Three Amigos written by Deborah Shaw and published by Spanish and Latin-American Filmmakers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first academic book dedicated to the filmmaking of the Mexican born directors Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Alfonso Cuarón. The book examines the career trajectories of the directors and presents a detailed analysis of their most significant films. These include studies on del Toro's Cronos/Chronos, El laberinto del fauno/Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army; Iñárritu's Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel; and Cuarón's Sólo con tu pareja/Love in the Time of Hysteria, Y tu mamá también, and Children of Men. All three have worked in diverse industrial contexts, and between them they have made key films that have changed the nature of filmmaking in Mexico, Hollywood blockbusters, US independent films, 'European' art films, and films that defy easy classification. They have had unprecedented international success and have crossed linguistic, national and generic borders, cutting through traditional divisions created by film markets. As a result, this book challenges the ways both markets and critics have created clear-cut distinctions between mainstream commercial and independent art cinema, and the ways they have conceptualised US, Latin American and European cinema as discrete entities. The work of the three directors creates new hybrid formations and makes us rethink ways in which we have understood the auteur label. The main theoretical approaches applied in this book to analyse the directors' working practices and texts centre on new readings of auteurism and transnational film theories. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of film studies and Hispanic studies, and general cinema enthusiasts who are interested in the films of the three directors.

Download or read book Breaking Her In written by Brianna Hale and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two things I know for certain: horses are better than people, and women are more trouble than they're worth. The revolution in Paravel was a celebration, for most. There's just a different set of assholes at the top, kicking down the ones below them. And that's where I am, at the bottom of the pile, and luscious and brazen Lady Aubrey is at the very top. She parades around my stables like she owns the place, wiggling that fine ass in her tight-fitting jodhpurs. It's not the first time a society girl has thrown herself at me to make Daddy angry, but this is the first one I've wanted to catch and toss down in the hay. Aubrey is a filly who refuses to be tamed. I'm determined to break her in and make her mine--before my family's past rears its ugly, traitorous head, and she's snatched from me forever. AUTHOR'S NOTE: Cassian Bellerose is a bad-tempered beast with his eye on a high-class filly. The Court of Paravel books continue chronologically. It's recommended that they're read in order.
