Book Synopsis Global Marine Environment by : Herman Prager
Download or read book Global Marine Environment written by Herman Prager and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the state system and the problem of ocean degradation as practiced in the West, specifically the Western industrial market economies. The author locates the source of the ecological problem in the allocation of power and values in a society, the differing public policies in response to divergent appreciations on the nature of social challenges and appropriate responses. This book is a valuable contribution to the collective efforts to educate the public about the worsening global crisis. His approach combines biology, chemistry and political science in its discussion of the tragic destruction of our oceans. Contents: The Evolution of the Contemporary State System; Theoretical Aspects of the Current State System; The Physical State of the Ocean and the Pollution Crisis; The Contribution of Intergovernmental Organizations; INGOs and Cetacean Protection; Conclusions.
Book Synopsis The Quest for World Environmental Cooperation by : Branislav Gosovic
Download or read book The Quest for World Environmental Cooperation written by Branislav Gosovic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992. In 1972, the UN Conference on the Human Environment initiated the process of world environmental cooperation. This study is about GEMS (the Global Environment Monitoring System) which the Conference recommended be set up to generate data and information necessary for worldwide environmental assessment. This book examines the genesis and evolution of GEMS, and the complex task involved in establishing GEMS and making it perform its functions. It relates GEMS to the factors which have shaped the international environmental agenda and cooperation since 1972. In particular, it highlights North-South differences and the problems inherent in the international organizations belonging to the UN system, vis-á-vis the novel and multifaceted challenges involved in dealing with systemic, cross-sectoral nature of global environmental problems. The lessons of GEMS and other issues presented in this book are highly relevant to the continuing efforts to set up effective programmes for ‘earthwatching’ and to promote international environmental cooperation. They also relate more broadly to the challenges of managing global interdependence and to the need to devise supporting organizational structures through reform and strengthening of the UN system. The comprehensive nature of the political and institutional analyses presented in this book make it an academic reference work of lasting value. Its frank tone and willingness to derive prescriptive conclusions will appeal in particular to the many actors engaged in the processes and structures of global multilateral cooperation. The book will be of special use to those interested in environmental issues and international organization

Book excerpt: Now in its 18th year, the NILOS Documentary Yearbook provides the reader with an excellent collection of documents related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea, issued each year by organizations, organs and bodies of the United Nations system. Documents of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, Meeting of States Parties to the UN Law of the Sea Convention, CLCS, ISBA, ITLOS, Follow-ups to the UN Fish Stocks and Small Island States Conferences, WSSD, ECOSOC, UNEP and UNCTAD are reproduced first, followed by the documents of FAO, IAEA, IMO and UNESCO/IOC. As in the previous volumes, documents which were issued in the course of 2002 are reproduced while other relevant documents are listed. The NILOS Documentary Yearbook has proved to be of invaluable assistance in facilitating access of the international community of scholars and practitioners in ocean affairs and the law of the sea to essential documentation. The entry of the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention into force in 1994 and of the Part XI Agreement in 1996, as well as of the UN Fish Stocks Agreement in 2001, coupled with the ongoing follow-up to review of the UNCED Agenda 21 by the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit, make continuation of this assistance of particular significance in the years to come. The members of the Yearbook's Advisory Board are: Judges Abdul Koroma and Shigeru Oda of the ICJ, UNDOALOS Director Dr. Vladimir Golitsyn, ITLOS President Dolliver Nelson and Judges Thomas Mensah and Tullio Treves, as well as Rosalie Balkin, Edward Brown, Bernard Oxman and Shabtai Rosenne.
