Book excerpt: This paper describes an experiment that will search for J/sup PC/ hybrid mesons at the Brookhaven MPS-II facility. Such explicitly exotic states are allowed in QCD, and are predicted to be in an accessible mass region by several models. The experiment will investigate the production of exotics in the reaction .pi./sup /minus//p .-->. .pi./sup /minus//f1p. Expected rates and experimental sensitivity to possible hybrid states are discussed. 3 refs. 3 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The?1(1600), a J{sup PC} = 1{sup {-+}} exotic meson has been observed by experiments using pion beams. Theorists predict that photon beams could produce gluonic hybrid mesons, of which the?1(1600) is a candidate, at enhanced levels relative to pion beams. The g12 rungroup at Jefferson Lab's CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) has recently acquired a large photoproduction dataset, using a liquid hydrogen target and tagged photons from a 5.71 GeV electron beam. A partial-wave analysis of 502K?p →??+?−n events selected from the g12 dataset has been performed, and preliminary fit results show strong evidence for well-known states such as the a1(1260), a2(1320), and?2(1670). However, we observe no evidence for the production of the?1(1600) in either the partial-wave intensities or the relative complex phase between the 1{sup {-+}} and the 2{sup {-+}} (corresponding to the?2) partial waves.

Download or read book Search for Exotic States, BNL Experiments E818 and E852 written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have performed an experiment (E-818) to search for exotic states in the reaction [pi]−p 2!X−p at 18 GeV/c at the Brookhaven MPS-2. The X− was detected through the sequential decay X− 2!f1(1285)[pi]−; f1(1285) 2!KK°{sub s}[pi]−. In the flux tube model such final states are expected from the decay of explicitly exotic J{sup PC} = 1{sup {minus plus}} hybrid mesons. We present preliminary results of this experiment and estimates of the expected sensitivity to hybrid states. We also describe the status of a new equipment (E-852) to search for exotic mesons in both neutral and charged final states in the reactions [pi]−p 2!M°n and [pi]−p 2!M−p at 21 GeV/c where M is a meson decaying into photons and 0, 1 or 2 charged particles. 4 refs., 9 figs., 1 tabs.

Book Synopsis Lattice QCD Studies of Pentaquarks and Exotics by : Anthony Thomas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possible discovery of the {Theta}{sup +} pentaquark has motivated a number of studies into its nature using lattice QCD. Initial studies focused on spin-1/2 states and more recently also spin-3/2 states. Here we report the results of the first exploratory study in quenched lattice QCD of pentaquarks with both spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 using the FLIC fermion action. We do not find any evidence for the standard lattice resonance signature of attraction (i.e. binding at quark masses near the physical regime) in the spin-1/2 channels or in the J{sup P} = 3/2{sup -} channel. Some evidence of binding is inferred in the isoscalar 3/2{sup +} channel. We also present the results of our study into exotic meson states using hybrid meson interpolators with explicit gluonic degrees of freedom. We find a candidate for the J{sup PC} = 1{sup {-+}} exotic meson which has a mass consistent with the {pi}{sub 1}(1600) experimental candidate.
Book Synopsis Currents and Mesons by : J. J. Sakurai
Download or read book Currents and Mesons written by J. J. Sakurai and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1969-01-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current and Mesons is the most recent publication in the Chicago Lectures in Physics series. The book presents Professor Sakurai's introduction to a new field of elementary particle physics which has become increasingly important in the past few years. It is based on a course given to his advanced graduate students in theoretical high-energy physics at the University of Chicago. The author begins with a brief review of SU (3). The major topics then treated are the divergence condition and current commutation relations, vector meson universality, PCAC and the Goldberger-Treiman relation, soft pion processes, and asymptotic symmetries and spectral-function sum rules. The book concludes with a discussion of notation and of normalization convention. Professor Sakurai's work deals with topics on which much of current discussion on the theory of elementary particles is focused. The material is designed for the advanced student who is seriously interested in doing original work, and as such provides a much needed introduction to the present literature in the field.

Book Synopsis Physical Foundations of Cosmology by : Viatcheslav Mukhanov
Download or read book Physical Foundations of Cosmology written by Viatcheslav Mukhanov and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflationary cosmology has been developed over the last twenty years to remedy serious shortcomings in the standard hot big bang model of the universe. This textbook, first published in 2005, explains the basis of modern cosmology and shows where the theoretical results come from. The book is divided into two parts; the first deals with the homogeneous and isotropic model of the Universe, the second part discusses how inhomogeneities can explain its structure. Established material such as the inflation and quantum cosmological perturbation are presented in great detail, however the reader is brought to the frontiers of current cosmological research by the discussion of more speculative ideas. An ideal textbook for both advanced students of physics and astrophysics, all of the necessary background material is included in every chapter and no prior knowledge of general relativity and quantum field theory is assumed.
