Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Gerson led an uneventful life growing up Jewish in East Tennessee. This changed when he decided to walk onto the Vanderbilt football team with no prior experience, beginning a lifelong love for the game with four years of exhilaration and heartbreak. After juggling the challenges of infatuation, a bowl game, a major steroid scandal and ultimate dishonor at Vandy, Gerson's journeys brought him close to danger in Africa and India, a brush with the Yeti in the Himalaya, and more football in Amsterdam. When he fell in love with Shelley while teaching at the prestigious Cranbrook Kingswood School in Michigan, his journey for meaning took a sharp turn as she revealed her painful secret. Using his wife's triumphs and challenges as motivation, Gerson stepped back onto the football field at the age of 31 in Canada, scoring points along the way to his final personal victory. This book contains frank discussions about sex, relationships, love, AIDS, and death, but it is appropriate for all ages.

Book excerpt: Hap, who works in the periphery of the software industry, has a gorgeous girlfriend and a great apartment in San Francisco, but he's just learned that the owner plans to sell his building, and he's afraid that moving out of the city will mean the end of his love affair. Called to a gathering of friends he's known from college and from jobs in Silicon Valley, he has to decide whether saving his apartment and his love affair is worth mortgaging his soul as the newest employee of Dreedle, a fiendish corporation devoted to selling out the privacy of every individual to the highest bidder. How They Scored mixes speculation about the loss of privacy in the 21st century with a journey through the beds of the bohemians of San Francisco and Austin, Serbian fashion models, Las Vegas wheeler-dealers, and a "landscape artist" whose life work is a hole in the ground in the middle of the desert.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning First Nations author, a ground-breaking examination of sport's troubled relationship with race, gender and sexuality. Award-winning writer Ellen van Neerven plays football from a young age, learning early on that sport can be a painful and exclusive world. The more they play, the more they realise about sport's troubled relationship with race, gender and sexuality, questioning what it means to play sport on stolen, sovereign land, especially in the midst of multiple environmental crises. With emotional honesty and searing insight, van Neerven shines a light on sport on this continent from a queer First Nations perspective, revealing how some athletes have long challenged mainstream views and used their roles to effect change not only in their own realm, but in society more broadly. Personal Score is a ground-breaking book that confirms, once again, van Neerven's unrivalled talent, courage and originality.

Book excerpt: Seldom, if ever, has a writer been given access to a former major drug dealer in the Mafia underworld and three generations of family members that followed. After nearly two years of interviews and subsequent research, it has been discovered that a close relative of the family was one of the most powerful figures in the Mafia from the 1940s to the mid 1990s, yet his identity until now has never been revealed. He was the consigliere for all of the American Mafia. The book tells in detail the life and times of a family who escaped the threat of Fascism in Sicily at the turn of the century and the rise of one of the children to a major figure in the Mob. Another sibling returned from a tragic life in an orphanage only to become an adept criminal. He ultimately spent twenty years off and on in prison with the Whos Who of the Mafia, men who became friends and had secret stories to tell. After prison, he became one of the pioneers of Off Off Broadway in NYC and later was responsible for the regeneration of Little Italy in the Lower East Side of NYC. The book details the influence and protection afforded later generations of the family to this day. It offers a unique insight into the real life of people during this 100 year period. Myths about the Mob are disclosed and inaccuracies in the history of the Mafia are corrected. It is a very compelling epic true story. It is a book you will not be able to put down. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With life expectancy on the rise, the proportion of people aged 60 or older is projected to account for more than one-fifth of the global population by 2050. Sleep quality is one of the most common health concerns that increases with age. Changes in sleep patterns associated with old age include disturbed sleep onset, an increase in sleep fragmentation, more frequent daytime dysfunction, and less slow-wave sleep than younger adults. Sleep is a complex physiological process critical to our health and survival; the many functions of sleep range from cerebral metabolic waste clearance and energy conservation to supporting cognitive performance and psychological well-being. Insufficient sleep has been linked to an increased risk of developing several chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunodeficiency, chronic pain, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. What remains unclear is how variations in sleep quality are related to cognitive performance and how this relationship changes with age, with several decades of research on the subject having produced mixed results. Despite this, much recent evidence indicates a strong relationship between disturbed sleep and accelerated cognitive decline in older adults. For example, several studies have found that a loss in sleep quality precedes the emergence of cognitive deficits and that sleep disturbances may therefore constitute an early marker of cognitive decline. Sleep disturbances also become more extensive with the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, which raises questions about the possibility of a bidirectional relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of blurring the line between score and sound design has transformed contemporary film soundscape by challenging not only the long-established hierarchical relationships between dialogue, music, and sound effects, but also the modes of perception shaped by classical soundtrack practices. The methods of this new trend rely on the language of contemporary popular and art music, producing soundtracks in which it is difficult to tell the difference between score and ambient sound, where pieces of electroacoustic music are merged with diegetic sound, sound effects are absorbed into the score or treated as music, and diegetic sound is treated as musique concrète. In Sound Design is the New Score, Kulezic-Wilson explores theoretical, aesthetic, and sensuous dimensions of this new trend, providing a multifaceted portrait of a practice which recognizes the interconnectedness of all soundtrack elements and emphasizes their inherent musicality. The aesthetic concerns of this practice are illuminated through the concept of the aesthetics of reticence which rejects classical narrative and scoring conventions and uses integrated soundtrack strategies to create the space for mystery in art and for individuality in the cinematic experience. The book's emphasis on sensuous and musical aspects of this practice, informed by the feminist discourse on the erotics of art, challenges popular notions about sensory cinema, demonstrating that the sensuousness of film form and its soundscapes is more sophisticated than simply being the result of excessive sensory stimulation facilitated by the use of digital technology or the "intensified" aesthetics it inspires. The discussion is supported by a wide range of case studies from American Independent, Asian, Australian, and European cinemas, including films by Shane Carruth, Claire Denis, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Harmony Korine, David Michôd, Gus Van Sant, and Peter Strickland.

Book excerpt: A Featured Alternate Selection of the Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club and a Main Selection of the Mystery Guild Janet Evanovich, bestselling author of One for the Money, Two for the Dough, and Three to Get Deadly, scores big with Four to Score, her most thrilling Stephanie Plum adventure yet. Working for her bail bondsman cousin Vinnie, Stephanie is hot on the trail of revenge-seeking waitress Maxine Nowicki, whose crimes include bail jumping, theft, and extortion. Someone is terrifying Maxine's friends, and those who have seen her are turning up dead. Also on the hunt for Maxine is Joyce Barnhardt, Stephanie's archenemy and rival bounty hunter. Stephanie's attitude never wavers-- even when aided by crazy Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker and wannabe bounty hunter Lula, and transvestite rock musician Sally Sweet-- and even when Stephanie makes an enemy whose deadly tactics escalate from threatening messages to firebombs. All of this pales in comparison, though, with an even greater danger Stephanie faces, when, homeless and broke, she and her hamster Rex move in with a vice cop Joe Morelli. RATED PG35 for licentious wit and libidinous cohabitation.

Book excerpt: By the summer of 1944, as the Allies moved into Belgium and Holland and it began to look like they had a chance to win the war, Sheila was at last posted to the European side of the English Channel, and was excited to think she would finally see some real action and have some adventures on the Continent. She didn’t expect it to change her life forever. While sorting through her mother Sheila’s letters, pictures, and poems after her death, Simonne Ferguson discovered a woman that she had only seen glimpses of as she was growing up. Three Score and Ten is a personal memoir of her mother’s life, from her childhood in England—the daughter of a patriotic Irish Catholic father and a middle-class English Protestant mother—to joining the British Army on the second day of WW2—a decision she never regretted—then leaving everything behind to come to Canada as a war bride, and adapting to life as a rural Ontario housewife, married to William ‘Brownie’ Eccles, and mother of four. A touching tribute to her mother, Three Score and Ten gives readers a glimpse into the life of a woman who was not afraid to stand up against injustice and for what she believed in, and who always tried to achieve her dreams, but was often frustrated and disappointed by the restrictions placed on women in the twentieth century.
