Book excerpt: One Summer, A Thousand Days is an uncommon book of Haiku poetry. It is uncommon in the sense that it is so wide ranging. It includes a chapter on one of the newest forms of Haiku, dubbed SciFaiku. In all, the book presents six-hundred poems, diverse in theme and format, touching many aspects of life. All three chapters of this book contain poems that invite the reader to reflect on their meanings, completing images in their own minds. The matters addressed will often contain broader truths readers will recognize in their lives. Throughout the book, the writer's style invokes irony, paradox, humor, twists and turns and surprises to provoke the reader to reflect and to find fresh perspectives. Chapter 1 has nature and humanity as its focus. Here the reader will find poems about nature, its seasons, the environment, animals, man's interactions with the natural environment, the spiritual aspects of living, the human life cycle, love, human behavior, the nature of thought, justice, truth, reality and illusion. Chapter 2 presents SciFaiku poems drawing on science and science fiction themes- man journeys, meets alien. They deal in speculations about possible future events, worlds to come. The poems are set in the context of what is known about mankind, its hopes and fears, strengths and vulnerabilities, its most deeply rooted tendencies. With Earth as home base, the poems fan their attention outward as man journeys to the stars. Chapter 3 presents a vast rainbow of Haiku poems written in a free-form style. Unlike the traditional format of the Haiku poems found in Chapters 1 and 2, containing three lines and seventeen syllables, this chapter captures thoughts in formats ranging from as few as three words to four full lines. Here, too, the topics are very diverse in nature and seek to engage the reader in the same manner. Many aspects of life are featured, the poems crossing boundaries like birds in flight.

Book excerpt: Poetry. Foreword by Penny Harter. LIFTING THE SKY is the first in a new series from Dos Gatos Press: Poetry of the American Southwest. A perfect marriage of form--haiku--and subject--the limitless inspirations of the American Southwest--LIFTING THE SKY is essential reading for haiku and poetry lovers everywhere. With thirty-three stunning haiga, this collection is also a treat for the eye. Penny Harter, co-author of The Haiku Handbook (25th Anniversary Edition, 2010), contributed the foreword. Here, Harter says, we enter haiku and haiga that take us through the beauties of the landscape--from desert and mountains to the sea; poems that express the poets' political, spiritual, mythical, cultural, and deeply personal connections to the Southwest; poems that make us laugh or cry; and poems drenched in light that repeatedly carry us from the Earth into the stars and galaxies. As does the landscape, these poems lift us out of ourselves.

Book excerpt: SciFaiku is like haiku, but the subject is science fiction rather than traditional haiku, which emphasizes nature. It's a thoughtful, inspiring, and often whimsical form of haiku.I'm a huge science fiction fan, and huge haiku fan, so finding SciFaiku as an art form was exciting. These are the SciFaiku poems I wrote over the span of a few years. Honestly, the quality of the poems is mixed, but I think some of them are pretty good. I hope they'll give you a chuckle or something to think about. If you are science fiction fan then you should try your hand at writing your own SciFaiku poems. It's great fun. Book excerpt: A collection of 108 haiku poems to heighten awareness and deepen our appreciation for the ordinary in everyday life Haiku, the Japanese form of poetry written in just three lines, can be miraculous in its power to articulate the profundity of the simplest moment—and for that reason haiku can be a useful tool for bringing us to a heightened awareness of our lives. Here, the poet Patricia Donegan shares her experience of the haiku form as a way of insight that anyone can use to slow down and uncover the beauty of ordinary moments. She presents 108 haiku poems—on themes such as honesty, transience, and compassion—and offers commentary on each as an impetus to meditation and as a key to unlocking the wonder in what we find right before us.
