This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Health Education Curriculum was borne out of the need to encourage interventions that could eliminate the public health problem of HIV/AIDS' among adolescents and it took cognizance of the fact that health education could not be said to have occurred unless there is an accompanying change in behavior. For expected change in behavior, the multifaceted conditions that influence behavior must be addressed. The curriculum was developed with particular attention to health education concepts, assumptions and components. Furthermore, several relevant behavioural theories guided the intervention study and lent support as the bedrock for the curriculum. Apart from the aforementioned components, the intervention features that guided the development of the curriculum was the inclusion of parents or guardians (significant persons) in the study, involvement of modeling and demonstrations as health education strategies instead of over-emphasis in only cognitive learning. It is therefore my greatest desire that this hand-book will be of immense benefit to all who are interested in preventive interventions and in spreading the message of HIV/AIDS' prevention and control

It presents specific suggestions for adapting curricula and teaching styles to meet the needs of individual students. The introduction discusses why students with special needs should receive HIV/AIDS education and what barriers to that education exist. It notes the elements necessary for quality HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. The second component provides ideas for adapting instructions for students with special needs (e.g., determining the appropriate program, using a multisensory approach, and using task analysis). It includes adaptation strategies, a quick reference, and an HIV/AIDS checklist. The third component offers teaching activities with suggestions for adaptations to accommodate students with specific disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and visual impairment). The fourth component offers a list of references and resources on HIV/AIDS education for students with special needs. (SM).

This book was released on 1991 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide was developed out of a 5-year project aimed at preventing the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by promoting HIV prevention and AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) education in school health programs. This document includes recommendations of a January, 1989 forum which addressed HIV prevention education for special education students, results of a review of existing curricula, and information on a training model which calls for teams of health educators and special educators to collaborate on the planning and delivery of instruction. The introduction describes the sponsoring organizations. A summary of the forum conclusions addresses the roles of professionals, parents, and children and youth with special needs as well as specific deficiencies discovered in instruction and curriculum; recommendations are provided under such topics as policy, training, inservice, statewide activities, curriculum, and instruction. Basic information about HIV and AIDS is presented next and includes information on risk factors for children and the role of education in helping stop the spread of AIDS. Policies, resolutions, and principles of several organizations for AIDS prevention education are presented next. Curriculum information is provided in the final section and includes a checklist for a good AIDS curriculum, a listing of curricula receiving favorable reviews, a sample AIDS curriculum, and a sample lesson plan. A list of resources including 14 materials, a database, three hotlines, and sources of training conclude the guide. (DB)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, Volume 2: Education Sector-Wide Approaches is part of a global effort to accelerate the sector's response to HIV/AIDS, particularly in Africa, and reflects the increasing recognition of the role that education has to play in the national response to HIV. A good education is now recognized as making a crucial contribution to reducing stigma and discrimination and to helping young people avoid infection. School-age children have the lowest prevalence of infection, and even in the worst-affected countries, the vast majority of schoolchildren remain uninfected. For these children there is a window of hope, a chance of a life free from HIV if they can acquire the knowledge, skills and values to help protect themselves as they grow up. Providing young people with the "social vaccine" of education offers them a real chance of a productive life. Sector-wide school-based programs have the potential to interact with large numbers of children and youth and offer a ready-made infrastructure for offering cost-effective HIV/AIDS education at population scale. This new volume was produced in response to requests from educators for programmatic examples of education sector-wide approaches. With lessons that are replicable and scalable, this new analysis of 10 HIV/AIDS prevention programs - from 6 Sub-Saharan African countries as well as the Dominican Republic and Israel - fills an important gap in programming expertise in the education sector.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are an estimated 42 million people worldwide living with HIV and AIDS. In the Caribbean, the statistics are alarming. After sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean has a higher HIV prevalence than any other area of the world. The need to control the spread of HIV is critical. Though medical advances have been successful in slowing the progress of the disease, there remains no cure for HIV and AIDS. In Challenging HIV and AIDS, the contributors, players at various levels in the education sector across the Caribbean, weigh in on the value of education as a means to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS. The contributions are unique to the Caribbean experience and culture and address the root causes of the spread of the epidemic. Reducing ignorance and the accompanying stigma and discrimination as well as addressing issues of sexuality through Health and Family Life Education in schools are identified as effective programs in addressing the epidemic.
