Book excerpt: Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, which is why this work shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of New York's sixty-two counties and where they can be found. In addition to the numerous statewide official censuses taken by New York, this work contains references to census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census. It also shows the location of copies of federal census records and provides county boundary maps and numerous state census facsimiles and extraction forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These elegant and evocative photographs portray the oldest continuously farmed county in New York as it was and and as it is today. Abandoned countryside and discarded buildings stand as silent memorials to the once-prosperous farming community of Schoharie County, New York. With an unique eye for the aesthetics of age, acclaimed photographers Steve Gross and Susan Daley honor this beautiful, troubled landscape in a collection of more than one hundred black-and-white photographs. Their work honors a legacy both precarious and perpetual, dotted with crumbling houses and barns, fallow fields and overrun woods.Novelist Jeffrey Lent writes, "In an America that often seems confused and uncertain of its future at this period in our history, Steve Gross and Susan Daley offer something quietly optimistic—the idea that we can, if we push through the dense covering foliage, arrive again at heightened expectations of ourselves.

Who says "gum band" instead of "rubber band"? The answers can be found in the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS), the largest single survey of regional and social differences in spoken American English. It covers the region from New York state to northern Florida and from the coastline to the borders of Ohio and Kentucky. Through interviews with nearly twelve hundred people conducted during the 1930s and 1940s, the LAMSAS mapped regional variations in vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation at a time when population movements were more limited than they are today, thus providing a unique look at the correspondence of language and settlement patterns. This handbook is an essential guide to the LAMSAS project, laying out its history and describing its scope and methodology. In addition, the handbook reveals biographical information about the informants and social histories of the communities in which they lived, including primary settlement areas of the original colonies. Dialectologists will rely on it for understanding the LAMSAS, and historians will find it valuable for its original historical research. Since much of the LAMSAS questionnaire concerns rural terms, the data collected from the interviews can pinpoint such language differences as those between areas of plantation and small-farm agriculture. For example, LAMSAS reveals that two waves of settlement through the Appalachians created two distinct speech types. Settlers coming into Georgia and other parts of the Upper South through the Shenandoah Valley and on to the western side of the mountain range had a Pennsylvania-influenced dialect, and were typically small farmers. Those who settled the Deep South in the rich lowlands and plateaus tended to be plantation farmers from Virginia and the Carolinas who retained the vocabulary and speech patterns of coastal areas. With these revealing findings, the LAMSAS represents a benchmark study of the English language, and this handbook is an indispensable guide to its riches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texture of Contact is a landmark study of Iroquois and European communities and coexistence in eastern North America before the American Revolution. David L. Preston details the ways in which European and Iroquois settlers on the frontiers creatively adapted to each other’s presence, weaving webs of mutually beneficial social, economic, and religious relationships that sustained the peace for most of the eighteenth century. Drawing on a wealth of previously unexamined archival research, Preston describes everyday encounters between Europeans and Indians along the frontiers of the Iroquois Confederacy in the St. Lawrence, Mohawk, Susquehanna, and Ohio valleys. Homesteads, taverns, gristmills, churches, and markets were frequent sites of intercultural exchange and negotiation. Complex diplomatic and trading relationships developed as a result of European and Iroquois settlers bartering material goods. Innovative land-sharing arrangements included the common practice of Euroamerican farmers living as tenants of the Mohawks, sometimes for decades. This study reveals that the everyday lives of Indians and Europeans were far more complex and harmonious than past histories have suggested. Preston’s nuanced comparisons between various settlements also reveal the reasons why peace endured in the Mohawk and St. Lawrence valleys while warfare erupted in the Susquehanna and Ohio valleys. One of the most comprehensive studies of eighteenth-century Iroquois history, The Texture of Contact broadens our understanding of eastern North America’s frontiers and the key role that the Iroquois played in shaping that world.

Book excerpt: Atlas of the Indian Tribes of the Continental United States and the Clash of Cultures The Atlas identifies of the Native American tribes of the United States and chronicles the conflict of cultures and Indians' fight for self-preservation in a changing and demanding new word. The Atlas is a compact resource on the identity, location, and history of each of the Native American tribes that have inhabited the land that we now call the continental United States and answers the three basic questions of who, where, and when. Regretfully, the information on too many tribes is extremely limited. For some, there is little more than a name. The history of the American Indian is presented in the context of America's history its westward expansion, official government policy and public attitudes. By seeing something of who we were, we are better prepared to define who we need to be. The Atlas will be a convenient resource for the casual reader, the researcher, and the teacher and the student alike. A unique feature of this book is a master list of the varied names by which the tribes have been known throughout history.
