Book excerpt: In 1798, a prospectus appeared for The Lady's Monthly Museum, a bold new project which - in contrast to the predominance of men's magazines at the time - would be edited by a "Society of Ladies" and would include wholesome entertainment exclusively intended for young women. But with the inclusion of the Gothic tale "Schabraco" in its second issue, the magazine attracted immediate controversy and letters questioning the publication's morality and suitability for young ladies. Despite - or perhaps because of - the outcry surrounding "Schabraco," the magazine went on to be an extremely popular and significant outlet of Gothic fiction for the next thirty years. Though the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, and their contemporaries have attracted considerable interest among readers and scholars in recent years, the vast output of Gothic fiction that appeared in popular magazines like The Lady's Monthly Museum has been almost entirely ignored, probably because of lack of access to these rare texts. Now for the first time, editor Dr. Jennie MacDonald has collected the best Gothic texts from this important periodical, including novelettes, stories, fragments, poems and drama, enabling readers to discover at last a wealth of lost Gothic material. Also included are a scholarly introduction and annotations, as well as reproductions of engravings that accompanied the original publication of these tales.

Book excerpt: At the start of the nineteenth century, German "Schauerliteratur" was so popular as to permanently associate that land with the Gothic and the ghostly. Translations of short pieces published in journals like The German Museum and Blackwood's Magazine started a vogue for this new kind of fiction amongst the English reading public. The present anthology, the first of its kind in a decade, collects together examples of these tales from many of the great masters of the genre, including Friedrich de La Motte Fouqué, Johann Karl August Musäus, Louisa Drachmann, and Heinrich Clauren. Featuring bandits, cursed knights, tragic spectres, witch cults, diabolical bargains and the thirsting dead, the pieces in this volume mark the point at which the Gothic novels of the eighteenth century met the psychological intensity of Romanticism in the birth of the modern horror story.

Book excerpt: Weird fiction has long been not only unappreciated but actively maltreated by orthodox esthetic evaluation, but its stature has improved considerably in modern times, and that has encouraged a reexamination of the genre's history. It has required nearly two centuries since the beginnings of modern weird fiction in the cradle of the Romantic Movement for the concept to be properly formulated, and the course of its development usefully mapped. That cartography can now be carried out with a reasonable degree of accuracy, as the present collection, albeit limited in time and space, hopefully illustrates. The book hopefully shows that fiction depicting hypothetical aberrations in nature or perception is not a necessarily a symptom of aberration on the part of the author, but frequently quite the opposite: evidence of a sanity contemplating its own potential limits and uncertainties, in a context that is esthetic rather than diagnostic. ' Romanticisme is not dead, and is no less preciously modern today than it was two centuries ago, and weird fiction is not the least of its achievements.
