As In Other Asian Countries, In India Too, Landfills, Groundwater Pollution, Residues Produced By Agro-Industrial Processes, And Other Similar Problems Pose A Threat. It Is Estimated That Methanogenic Anaerobic Digestion Releases Over 250 Million Tonnes Of Methane Gas Annually All Over The World - Methane Is A Substantial Contributor To Global Warming. These Facts Compel Us To Take A Closer Look At The Need To Recycle Waste Rather Than Simply Find Ways To Dispose Of It. At A Time When The World Is Confronted With The Twin Challenges Of Fossil-Fuel Depletion And Environmental Degradation, The Book Emphasizes How Addressing The Latter Could Contribute To Mitigating The Former By Addressing The Issues Of Generating Energy From Waste, Describing Scientific Methods To Minimize Its Hazardous Impacts, Providing An Assessment Of The Existing Technologies, And Highlighting Various Aspects Of Biofuel Production And Cogeneration.

Book excerpt: This edition of Wealth from Waste takes a closer look at the different avenues that consider waste a resource for recycling and valorization rather than contemplating its disposal. The book provides insight into the possible technological innovations and options that can be adopted, along with the current trends and opportunities that are available worldwide for converting waste into value-added resources. In the individual chapters, authors have discussed and reviewed the possible options for conversion of various waste streams generated from municipalities and other urban establishments and biomass-based waste generated from argo-based industries and different industrial activities into an energy resource. The book also looks into the regulatory framework available in the country, which is required at every stage of the life cycle of waste, and the needs for improvement of this framework. This edition will serve as an important reference for a wide range of stakeholders-from policy-makers to environmentalists, development practitioners, academicians, waste management experts, researchers, and corporate decision-makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Industrial Design and Waste Management was inspired by the need to have a text that enveloped awareness and solutions to the ongoing issues and concerns of waste generated from industry. The development of science and technology has increased human capacity to extract resources from nature and it is only recently that industries are being held accountable for the detrimental effects the waste they produce has on the environment. Increased governmental research, regulation and corporate accountability are digging up issues pertaining to pollution control and waste treatment and environmental protection. The traditional approach for clinical waste, agricultural waste, industrial waste, and municipal waste are depleting our natural resources. The main objective of this book is to conserve the natural resources by approaching 100 % full utilization of all types of wastes by cradle – to - cradle concepts, using Industrial Ecology methodology documented with case studies. Sustainable development and environmental protection cannot be achieved without establishing the concept of industrial ecology. The main tools necessary for establishing Industrial Ecology and sustainable development will be covered in the book. The concept of “industrial ecology will help the industrial system to be managed and operated more or less like a natural ecosystem hence causing as less damage as possible to the surrounding environment. Numerous case studies allow the reader to adapt concepts according to personal interest/field Reveals innovative technologies for the conservation of natural resources The only book which provides an integrated approach for sustainable development including tools, methodology, and indicators for sustainable development

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many good books in the market dealing with the subject of allelopathy. When we designed the outline of this new book, we thought that it should include as many different points of view as possible, although in an integrated general scheme. Allelopathy can be viewed from different of perspectives, ranging from the molecular to the ecosystem level, and including molecular biology, plant biochemistry, plant physiology, plant ecophysiology and ecology, with information coming also from the organic chemistry, soil sciences, microbiology and many other scientific disciplines. This book was designed to include a complete perspective of allelopathic process. The book is divided into seven major sections. The first chapter explores the international development of allelopathy as a science and next section deals with methodological aspects and it explores potential limitations of actual research. Third section is devoted to physiological aspects of allelopathy. Different specialists wrote about photosynthesis, cell cycle, detoxification processes, abiotic and biotic stress, plant secondary metabolites and respiration related to allelopathy. Chapters 13 through 16 are collectively devoted to various aspects of plant ecophysiology on a variety of levels: microorganisms, soil system and weed germination. Fundamental ecology approaches using both experimental observations and theoretical analysis of allelopathy are described in chapters 16 and 17. Those chapters deal with the possible evolutionary forces that have shaped particular strategies. In the section named “allelopathy in different environments”, authors primarily center on marine, aquatic, forest and agro ecosystems. Last section includes chapters addressing application of the knowledge of allelopathy.

Here is a revolutionary solution to problems of industrial wastemanagement by creating a system of environmentally balanced"industrial complexes" in which groups of industrial plants consumeeach other's waste--not only benefiting the environment, but alsosignificantly reducing production costs. Providing a clear introduction to this novel approach, ZeroPollution for Industry goes right to the heart of whatenvironmental scientists, engineers, and administrators grapplewith these days. It takes pollution prevention to the next level, past current reduction and reuse methods, and anticipatesgovernment regulations and societal trends that would factorenvironmental damage into production costs. Also suitable as a companion volume for traditional industrialwaste management texts at the graduate level, thisthought-provoking book: * Covers hot new material under consideration by professionals andpolicymakers, including the EPA and the NSF * Discusses the basics of waste minimization and waste reuse aswell as zero-pollution industrial complexing * Presents detailed examples of how complexes in differentindustries could be structured * Describes how to change industrial plant design practices toprevent pollution * Teaches innovative production techniques for environmentalprotection to future engineers and administrators * Shows how to plan for a pollution-free environment from anadministrative point of view Concise and uncluttered, this book is an eye-opener for anyone whowould like to work toward a world free of industrial pollution inour fragile environment.

Book excerpt: Business ecology is a new field that synthesizes centuries of cultural wisdom, a close observation of natural systems, and proven business success strategies, such as strategic planning and total quality management. It emulates nature's systems design to provide a harmonious, relationship-oriented approach that reveals how your organization really works. This book applies these principles to help you integrate profitability, stakeholder relations, and environmental performance ¦ giving your organization the natural edge in emerging ecological economy. Business ecology measures not just financial but overall viability by revealing vital flows and relationships that sustain your business. It is a lens for seeing those intangible elements of your organization's design -- such as core values, value-creation cycles, and innovative thinking ¦ that are essential factors shaping its success. The Business Ecology Network (BEN), founded in 1995, is a catalyst for life-sustaining enterprise. BEN is a learning community for leaders and managers who want to apply a new way of thinking ¦ business ecology ¦ to create new, sustainable opportunities for their businesses and non profit organizations.
