On assignment for his first cover story for Rolling Stone, the very first national cover story on Eminem, Anthony Bozza met a young blond kid, a rapper who would soon take the country by storm. But back in 1999, Eminem was just beginning to make waves among suburban white teenagers as his first single, “My Name Is,” went into heavy rotation on MTV. Who could have predicted that in a mere two years, Eminem would become the most reviled and controversial hip-hop figure ever? Or that twelve months after that, Eminem would sit firmly at the pinnacle of American celebrity, a Grammy winner many times over and the recipient of an Oscar. did eminem change or did america finally figure him out? Whatever You Say I Am attempts to answer this question and many more. Since their first meeting, Bozza has been given a level of access to Eminem that no other journalist has enjoyed. In Whatever You Say I Am, original, never-before-published text from Bozza’s interviews with Eminem are combined with the insight of numerous hip-hop figures, music critics, journalists, and members of the Eminem camp to look behind the mask of this enigmatic celebrity. With an eye toward Eminem’s place in American popular culture, Bozza creates a thoughtful portrait of one of the most successful artists of our time. This is so much more than a biography of a thoroughly well-documented life. It is a close-up look at a conflicted figure who has somehow spoken to the heart of America.

Book excerpt: LIFE Books managing editor, Robert Sullivan, has twice been awarded the Wilbur Award for best religion feature in a national magazine and has authored LIFE's New York Times best-selling biography of Pope John Paul II. He brings to this book his expertise on the subject of Christianity a long with text informed by the world's great scholars, theologians and religious figures. Jesus emerged from nowhere to become, in his short life-perhaps as few as 32 years-a thinker, teacher and preacher whose words and deeds would change the world and become the foundation for the world's largest religion. But the biography as outlined in the New Testament and apocryphal writings only tells us so much. LIFE's editors go, in words and pictures, in search of Jesus of Nazareth, the carpenter's son who would one day influence all. The great photographer Denis Waugh once made a thorough, colorful and moving pictorial pilgrimage to the Holy Land exclusively for LIFE, and those images will anchor our quest. We will travel, as well, to the Vatican, to the missions of Africa, to the Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco-to all that has risen in Jesus, name. In the book's final section, we will look at Christianity today: Its still vastly influential place in our tumultuous world.
Book Synopsis Say what I Am Called by : Dieter Bitterli
Download or read book Say what I Am Called written by Dieter Bitterli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most enigmatic cultural artifacts that survive from the Anglo-Saxon period are the Old English riddle poems that were preserved in the tenth century Exeter Book manuscript. Clever, challenging, and notoriously obscure, the riddles have fascinated readers for centuries and provided crucial insight into the period. In Say What I Am Called, Dieter Bitterli takes a fresh look at the riddles by examining them in the context of earlier Anglo-Latin riddles. Bitterli argues that there is a vigorous common tradition between Anglo-Latin and Old English riddles and details how the contents of the Exeter Book emulate and reassess their Latin predecessors while also expanding their literary and formal conventions. The book also considers the ways in which convention and content relate to writing in a vernacular language. A rich and illuminating work that is as intriguing as the riddles themselves, Say What I Am Called is a rewarding study of some of the most interesting works from the Anglo-Saxon period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human existence is a bodily existence. A first principle of historic Christianity has been that Jesus assumed our humanity and everything essential to it in order that God may redeem all of our existence. Christ is the revelation of God and the revelation of true humanity. As we seek to understand our embodied experiences of the world and one another we do so in light of the embodied life of Jesus Christ. Jesus's humanity shows us what it means to live an embodied human life rightly and how we, as embodied human beings, can relate to the world around us. In this book we invite readers to explore with us why the humanity of Jesus is central to the Christian understanding of community, society, salvation, and life with God. Over the span of these ten chapters this book draws from biblical, historic, and cultural discussions as it enters into the breadth of the significance of the humanity of Jesus and explores how the reality of the Incarnation challenges and redeems our broken social structures, racial and ethnic divisions, economic systems, and sexuality.

Are you sure but not sure about what you believe? Who you say Jesus is, is the linchpin to all the fears and uncertainties that we all face in our lives. Is Jesus your lord and savior? Is Jesus a myth, just the name in a story? I am here to tell you, that is not the case. Jesus can and will remove all fear and uncertainty from your life if you believe. How you answer the question "Who do you say that I am?" sets you up to see glory or see misery and torment. This book is an attempt to get to the heart of the matter, who Jesus is, and not get bogged down by all manner of theology. That so often just muddies the water. Who Jesus is to you decides your eternal destiny, and nobody can answer that question but you.

Book excerpt: The Gospel can be considered a Manual of Prayer, a letter written by the Holy Spirit to you. But God's Word doesn't live in a book. It comes alive when you pray about It. It is not about getting to know what the 'Historical Jesus' did two thousand years ago, what He said "back then"; Jesus Christ is not 'back then' anymore, He is alive, and is longing to talk to you.Taking the Gospel of the day, the iPray provides a commentary that can be a trigger for an authentic and personal conversation with Jesus. That time of prayer spent with Jesus is like a 'cooking pot' in which you blend the Words and scenes of Jesus' life, found in the Gospel, together with your daily life, your worries, your family and friends, all heated up by the fire of the Holy Spirit.'iPray with the Gospel' is not a ready-made meal you can just throw in the microwave, as if they were some prayers that you read and that's it. It is more like a personal recipe that only you can cook with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Book Synopsis Who Do You Say That I Am? by : Michael Root
Download or read book Who Do You Say That I Am? written by Michael Root and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No question is more central to Christian living, preaching, and theology than Jesus' question to his disciples: Who do you say that I am? Some would have it that pastors and theologians, biblical exegetes and historians, dogmatic and moral theologians, Catholic and Evangelical have more differences than similarities in the way Christians with such diverse vocations respond to Jesus' question. And there is little doubt that there sometimes seem to be unbridgeable gulfs between the way historians and believers, Internet gossipers and preachers, classical christological debates and present-day praying and pastoral care implicitly or explicitly address the Lord's question. But the authors here address these and other issues in ways that are remarkably convergent, as if a "Catholic and Evangelical theology" for proclaiming and following Jesus today has emerged, or is indeed emerging.

When one looks at the different and sometimes conflicting tenets propagated by these followers of Jesus it is apparent that not everybody who professes to be Christian truly knows Jesus. This book, But Who Do Say That I Am?, interrogates the individuals relationship with Christ in the context of a personal answer to this question. Some people only follow Jesus the miracle worker, who turned water into wine, and run away from Jesus the suffering servant, who cried aloud on the cross in the midst of excruciating suffering.

Stu brings a fresh perspective of Jesus, the Messiah in the Hebrew Scriptures, the Lord of Hosts, the prophetic teacher who met the disciples on the Road to Emmaus, and whose presence extends before and beyond the order of Melchizedek. I guarantee you will be blessed by reading "But who do you say that I am?" Chaplain Sandi Richard', M.Div., BCC The Bible just did not make sense to me! So I was surprised when Stewart Whittemore sent me a draft copy of (his) latest book and asked me to review and edit his writings. I began the task, looking at grammar, spelling and sentence structure. Soon, I comprehended a clear view into God's story and how life in the Old Testament foretold future events that would take place in the New Testament, at the coming of His Son, Jesus of Nazareth. Stewart's clear writing with biblical references, comparing the old and new testaments, allowed me to finally gain an understanding and appreciation into the meaning, content and truth in God's Holy Bible: It is "HIS Story" to us, HIS children! Bette Jo Martinoli Ultimately, we must all decide who the Christ is, and that decision will set the course of our lives for all eternity. Join Stewart in a walk through God's ancient word to his chosen people. Your heart will burn at revelations of His work to save those who believe in the One and Only God and His Son whom he would send. Book Synopsis Who Did You Say That I Am? by : Jerry Hagee
Download or read book Who Did You Say That I Am? written by Jerry Hagee and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In John 8:32 Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Then why, do I have doubts about my salvation? What is truth? What does free mean? How can I know for sure that I have salvation? One cannot be free without salvation! No wonder that many have doubts about salvation. Jesus despised the religious traditions of mankind. He called those who were chained with religion’s traditions, hypocrites. He quoted Isaiah’s prophecy in Matt 15:9, “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” In Vain? With no purpose? Jesus was saying, you worship in folly. He was saying to the religious leaders with their man-made rules and to their followers, you shall in no case enter into the “Kingdom of Heaven”. What is your litmus test to obtain salvation? Have you wondered about the rules and laws that you follow? What do the leaders of your religion demand of you? This book is filled with answers and with freedom. Not from my mere writings, but with clarity from the Holy Spirit emblazoned in the Holy Bible. The litmus test as a boy growing up in a church was if you did not smoke, drink, cuss, dance, be with girls, play with cards, gamble, play pool, go to bars, break any of the 10 commandments, miss church service; you might go to heaven. I think, I pretty much flunked. Non the less, that was preached from the pulpit. You will see gratitude for dedicated people who have unbelievable IQ’s in science, but you will find that even some truly great intellects fail to see a need for God. The Living God relationship is needed by every living human which does include all of the Intellects and those of us with less evolution. Included are a few of the personal happenings of my life that are clearly Spiritual. This book reveals only a few of God’s actual involvements in spite of my fleeting fellowship with Him. The mathematical probability of each is prodigious. Why do people say that “God loves us”? If you read carefully, the answer is clear. The definition of grace will be understandable. Faith is explored. Is faith really necessary? How does one know if they have faith? Do you think you are saved and yet you still sin, occasionally? For some us, maybe more than occasionally. If you do, comfort may be near. But most importantly, we are going to die. What, then? The book sometimes may have, some troubling details. Our soul will meet up with our new body and this information is more than sparsely included. What is it like in Hell? The answer is clear. It is for sure that it is not one, never-ending, great big party of like-minded individuals. The book touches on what it is like to live in hell. Eternally, to live there. Do I really exist after I die? Maybe you should get this book. I am as certain as I can be that when you finish reading you will probably think of someone that desperately needs this book.

Book Synopsis Who Do People Say I Am? by : Vernon K. Robbins
Download or read book Who Do People Say I Am? written by Vernon K. Robbins and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning early Christian writings from the Gospel of Mark to the Acts of John, this book by Vernon Robbins explores the various ways early Christians explained their understanding of the special nature of Jesus beyond the canonical Gospels. Who Do People Say I Am? shows how second-and third-century Christian authors of additional Gospels and Gospel-like writings expanded and elaborated on Jesus divinity in the context of his earthly existence. According to Robbins, these Christian authors thought that the New Testament Gospel writers could and should have emphasized the divinity of Jesus more than they did. Throughout the book Robbins asks and answers questions such as these: If Jesus introduced new beliefs and practices, what did second- and third-century believers find unresolved in the New Testament Gospels about those beliefs and practices, and how did they try to resolve them? What gaps in the storylines of the New Testament Gospels did second- and third-century Christian writers think could be filled in, and how did they fill them in? If Jesus really were fully divine when he came to earth and lived among his disciples, what experiences did his disciples have that the New Testament Gospels do not tell us? Learning activities and a bibliography at the end of each chapter help make this book a valuable resource for students and any other interested readers.
