Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most enigmatic cultural artifacts that survive from the Anglo-Saxon period are the Old English riddle poems that were preserved in the tenth century Exeter Book manuscript. Clever, challenging, and notoriously obscure, the riddles have fascinated readers for centuries and provided crucial insight into the period. In Say What I Am Called, Dieter Bitterli takes a fresh look at the riddles by examining them in the context of earlier Anglo-Latin riddles. Bitterli argues that there is a vigorous common tradition between Anglo-Latin and Old English riddles and details how the contents of the Exeter Book emulate and reassess their Latin predecessors while also expanding their literary and formal conventions. The book also considers the ways in which convention and content relate to writing in a vernacular language. A rich and illuminating work that is as intriguing as the riddles themselves, Say What I Am Called is a rewarding study of some of the most interesting works from the Anglo-Saxon period.

Who are you, Lord, that I might dare to follow you? Jesus’s evocative question to the disciples at Caesarea Philippi, “Who do you say that I AM?” elicits a bold Christological confession from Simon Peter, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” Divinely revealed, Simon’s assertive testimony sets in motion the center and the witness of Christian faith. Jesus’s direct question posed to the disciples reverberates even now as it probes the hearts and minds of all believers and nonbelievers. “Who do you say that I AM?” “Who Do You Say that I AM?” explores the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth through an examination of salient divine names used of him as revealed in Scripture. These titular clues will serve to broaden the reader’s understanding of this Jesus “whom even the wind and sea obey.” It is the author’s hope that its readers will discover the profound meaning of Jesus’s question in their own lives and dare to answer the saving question, “Who do you say that the Son of Man is?”

Book excerpt: In John 8:32 Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Then why, do I have doubts about my salvation? What is truth? What does free mean? How can I know for sure that I have salvation? One cannot be free without salvation! No wonder that many have doubts about salvation. Jesus despised the religious traditions of mankind. He called those who were chained with religion’s traditions, hypocrites. He quoted Isaiah’s prophecy in Matt 15:9, “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” In Vain? With no purpose? Jesus was saying, you worship in folly. He was saying to the religious leaders with their man-made rules and to their followers, you shall in no case enter into the “Kingdom of Heaven”. What is your litmus test to obtain salvation? Have you wondered about the rules and laws that you follow? What do the leaders of your religion demand of you? This book is filled with answers and with freedom. Not from my mere writings, but with clarity from the Holy Spirit emblazoned in the Holy Bible. The litmus test as a boy growing up in a church was if you did not smoke, drink, cuss, dance, be with girls, play with cards, gamble, play pool, go to bars, break any of the 10 commandments, miss church service; you might go to heaven. I think, I pretty much flunked. Non the less, that was preached from the pulpit. You will see gratitude for dedicated people who have unbelievable IQ’s in science, but you will find that even some truly great intellects fail to see a need for God. The Living God relationship is needed by every living human which does include all of the Intellects and those of us with less evolution. Included are a few of the personal happenings of my life that are clearly Spiritual. This book reveals only a few of God’s actual involvements in spite of my fleeting fellowship with Him. The mathematical probability of each is prodigious. Why do people say that “God loves us”? If you read carefully, the answer is clear. The definition of grace will be understandable. Faith is explored. Is faith really necessary? How does one know if they have faith? Do you think you are saved and yet you still sin, occasionally? For some us, maybe more than occasionally. If you do, comfort may be near. But most importantly, we are going to die. What, then? The book sometimes may have, some troubling details. Our soul will meet up with our new body and this information is more than sparsely included. What is it like in Hell? The answer is clear. It is for sure that it is not one, never-ending, great big party of like-minded individuals. The book touches on what it is like to live in hell. Eternally, to live there. Do I really exist after I die? Maybe you should get this book. I am as certain as I can be that when you finish reading you will probably think of someone that desperately needs this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of long involvement with adherents of many religions, Shenk dares to assert that one can be profoundly respectful of people of other faith traditions and still retain the integrity of one's own faith. -- from the Foreword by Wilbert R. Shenk Can we respect other religions and still view Christ as normative for all? Yes, says Calvin Shenk, Professor Emeritus of Religion at Eastern Mennonite University. How? Answers are not simple. However, biblical perspectives on religions provide reliable starting points for the journey. And placing Christ at the center of the quest yields clarity amid complexity. For Christians, candid commitment to the uniqueness of Christ is to be accomplished by the integrity of Christ. This leads to loving witness that includes truly dialoguing with persons committed to other religions. 'Who Do You Say That I Am?' assesses contemporary theologies of religious pluralism as well as several of the world's major religions, yet remains accessible to all thoughtful Christians.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling books have taken the view that the oldest New Testament documents paint a very different picture to later copies. Others are of the opinion that the original gospel accounts were never intended to be historically accurate. Many people assume that the bias of the original New Testament authors distorted their recollections of Jesus, and Jesus' words were not put into written form for several decades, allowing distortion to occur. What would you say? What do you believe and why? Were Jesus' words recorded accurately by the gospel writers during Jesus' life & the making & copying of the New Testament? This highly readable journey of discovery considers gospel textual criticism, Christian historiography, archaeology, literacy & more. See evidence for the reliability of the recounting of Jesus as found in the Bible. This Christian apologetic book provides evidence in an engaging manner, following along a logical journey of discovery. When you've purchased and read this book you will: - understand how literate and historically aware the ancient civilisations were - appreciate how it was possible for the first disciples to accurately record Jesus' life and teachings - have a highly readable explanation of early Greek New Testament documents and know what they have to say about accuracy in copying - know the content and credibility of non-Christian ancient literature that comment on Jesus and the first Christians.

Many Protestants would argue no. And if you point out that there is a priesthood in the Old Testament, they are likely to say it was a feature of the Old Covenant that was undone by Christ. How should a Catholic respond? In Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood, biblical scholar John Bergsma convinces readers that Jesus did, in fact, intend for a ministerial priesthood to be a key feature of the New Covenant. Bergsma shows how the priesthood is a major thread holding together the biblical story line—beginning with Adam’s loss of the gift of priesthood in the Fall and the long process of restoring his descendants to a priestly status over the centuries, culminating with Christ. With chapter summaries and discussion questions included, Jesus and the Old Testament Roots of the Priesthood can readily be adapted into a four-part study for personal or small group use.

Book excerpt: Volume 54 Sermons 3073-3124 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.

God created the light by calling for "light" when only darkness was there. Jesus used this same method, calling the lepers clean, and the dead to life, and peace to the storm. You must call for what you desire. if you want your dog to come, you call the dog, not the cat. You call for what is not there. Whatever you call in the natural will come. Call what does not exist and continue to call until it manifests.
