Excerpt: ...with the people themselves to stay the devastation of consumption. As a scientific fact it is interesting to know that the opinion of the Congress appears not to support the views of Koch that bovine tuberculosis is not transmissible to human beings; or that probably serums may yet be discovered which would be preventative of tuberculosis, as a serum is in the case of diphtheria. But it is far more important to know that it is bad personal habits, and the surroundings of ordinary domestic and working life, which encourage the growth and production of microbes. The fight with tuberculosis will be successful in proportion as contagion is prevented, and as poverty, unhealthy dwellings, badly ventilated shops and factories, and alcoholism cease to be such prevalent conditions of life. Birmingham we are glad to see is not to be contented with a university for teaching brewing and other useful arts alone. The meeting on Thursday held with the object of forming in Birmingham a branch of the Classical Association for the Midlands may be taken as an indication that before long the University will, as its Principal Sir Oliver Lodge strongly desires, have a Greek Chair. Founders of a Classical Association are of course people who are deeply sensible of the value of the Greek and Latin literatures and of the mental training that can be given by their means. But it is significant that the Bishop of Birmingham should say that the absurdities of classical education are imperilling its substantial good; that Professor Sonnenschein said Greek could not hold its own if it continued to be studied as it is now, and that other speakers all expressed similar opinions. The Principal summed them all up by saying that he should advise the Classical...

Imperial treaties it is said stand in the way. What treaties'? If Canada can give us preference, why not Australia? The action of the Imperial authorities compelled the Australian Government to return 30,000 excess Customs already collected from importers of foreign goods. Could there be a greater economic farce than this? The Empire is reduced to a laughing-stock to please the foreigner and the free importer. There is a rare piquancy about Mr. Sydney Olivierls appointment to the governorship of Jamaica. Mr. Olivier has about him most of the qualities required to frighten the plain man. He has brilliant intellect and aesthetic temperament; he has written verse and is a crank, at least a Socialist, which to the average man counts for the same thing. Mr. Olivier is one of the Fabian essayists--quite a high intellectual diploma in itself. And the cream of the thing is that, though Mr. Olivier is all this, he is not a failure as man of action. This is against all the rules of "sound common sense ." Mr. Olivier has governed Jamaica before now, and his dispensation was a strikingly successful autocracy. This appointment was planned, surely, to eclipse the Government's ill-treatment of Sir Alexander Swettenham---rn vain. A memorandum on Mr. Haldane's scheme issued l by the National Service League follows to some extent the views we have expressed on the subject. We cannot, however, altogether agree with the attitude adopted; nor is the scheme given the credit it deserves. The main point about it is that it provides the machinery for introducing at some subsequent period a system of compulsion, which is a distinct advance. The points briefly are these: The name " territorial army...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after Grace King wrote her first stories in post-Reconstruction New Orleans, she entered a world of famous figures and literary giants greater than she could ever have imagined. Notable writers and publishers of the Northeast bolstered her career, and she began a decades-long friendship with Mark Twain and his family that was as unlikely as it was remarkable. Beginning in 1887, King paid long visits to the homes of friends and associates in New England and benefited from their extended circles. She interacted with her mentor, Charles Dudley Warner; writers Harriet Beecher Stowe and William Dean Howells; painter Frederic E. Church; suffragist Isabella Beecher Hooker; Chaucer scholar Thomas Lounsbury; impresario Augustin Daly; actor Will Gillette;cleric Joseph Twichell; and other stars of the era. As compelling as a novel, this audacious story of King’s northern ties unfolds in eloquent letters. They hint at the fictional themes that would end up in her own art; they trace her development from literary novice to sophisticated businesswoman who leverages her own independence and success. Through excerpts from scores of new transcriptions, as well as contextualizing narrative and annotations, Miki Pfeffer weaves a cultural tapestry that includes King’s volatile southern family as it struggles to reclaim antebellum status and a Gilded Age northern community that ignores inevitable change. King’s correspondence with the Clemens family reveals incomparable affection. As a regular guest in their household, she quickly distinguished “Mark,” the rowdy public persona, from “Mr. Clemens,” the loving husband of Livy and father of Susy, Clara, and Jean, all of whom King came to know intimately. Their unguarded, casual revelations of heartbreaks and joys tell something more than the usual Twain lore, and they bring King into sharper focus. All of their existing letters are gathered here, many published for the first time. A New Orleans Author in Mark Twain’s Court paints a fascinating picture of the northern literary personalities who caused King’s budding career to blossom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of John Venn’s life and work. John Venn (1834–1923) is remembered today as the inventor of the famous Venn diagram. The postmortem fame of the diagram has until now eclipsed Venn’s own status as one of the most accomplished logicians of his day. Praised by John Stuart Mill as a “highly successful thinker” with much “power of original thought,” Venn had a profound influence on nineteenth-century scientists and philosophers, ranging from Mill and Francis Galton to Lewis Carroll and Charles Sanders Peirce. Venn was heir to a clerical Evangelical dynasty, but religious doubts led him to resign Holy Orders and instead focus on an academic career. He wrote influential textbooks on probability theory and logic, became a fellow of the Royal Society, and advocated alongside Henry Sidgwick for educational reform, including that of women’s higher education. Moreover, through his students, a direct line can be traced from Venn to the early analytic philosophy of G. E. Moore and Bertrand Russell, and family ties connect him to the famous Bloomsbury group. This essential book takes readers on Venn’s journey from Evangelical son to Cambridge don to explore his life and work in context. Drawing on Venn’s key writings and correspondence, published and unpublished, Lukas M. Verburgt unearths the legacy of the logician’s wide-ranging thinking while offering perspective on broader themes in religion, science, and the university in Victorian Britain. The rich picture that emerges of Venn, the person, is of a man with many sympathies—sometimes mutually reinforcing and at other times outwardly and inwardly contradictory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the word ‘progressive’ through modern British history, from the Enlightenment to Brexit. It explores the shifting meanings of this term and the contradictory political projects to which it has been attached. It also places this political language in its cultural context, asking how it relates to ideas about progressive social development, progressive business, and progressive rock music. ‘Progressive’ is often associated with a centre-left political tradition, but this book shows that this was only ever one use of the term – and one that was heavily contested even from its inception. The power of the term ‘progressive’ is that it appears to anticipate the future. This can be politically and culturally valuable, but it is also dangerous. The suggestion that there is only one way forward has led to fear and doubt, anger and apathy, even amongst those who would like to consider themselves ‘progressive people’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raising key questions about race, class, sexuality, age, material culture, intellectual history, pedagogy, and gender, this book explores the myriad relationships between feminist thinking and Little Women, a novel that has touched many women's lives. A critical introduction traces 130 years of popular and critical response, and the collection presents 11 new essays, two new bibliographies, and reprints of six classic essays. The contributors examine the history of illustrating Little Women; Alcott's use of domestic architecture as codes of female self-expression; the tradition of utopian writing by women; relationship to works by British and African American writers; recent thinking about feminist pedagogy; the significance of the novel for women writers, and its implications from the vantage points of middle-aged scholar, parent, and resisting male reader.
