Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes Spanish rule and Catholic practice from the consolidation of Spanish control in the Americas in the sixteenth century to the loss of these colonies in the nineteenth century by following the life and afterlife of an accidental martyr, San Felipe de Jésus. Using Mexico City-native San Felipe as the central figure, Conover tracks the global aspirations of imperial Spain in places such as Japan and Rome without losing sight of the local forces affecting Catholicism. He demonstrates the ways Spanish religious attitudes motivated territorial expansion and transformed Catholic worship. Using Mexico City as an example, Conover also shows that the cult of saints continually refreshed the spiritual authority of the Spanish monarch and the message of loyalty of colonial peoples to a devout king. Such a political message in worship, Conover concludes, proved contentious in independent Mexico, thus setting the stage for the momentous conflicts of the nineteenth century in Latin American religious history.

Book excerpt: This series of line drawings by legendary Santera (saint-maker) Marie Romero Cash, depict many of the popular saints painted by the santeros of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Northern New Mexico. "The saints have always been an integral part of the culture," Marie says, "so much so that in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in New Mexico the art of the religious folk art of the santero became a part of its history. In creating this coloring book, my goal was to not only impart knowledge about the santero culture, but to provide images that could be colored in by children or adults, and could also be used for many other purposes, including embroidery or various decorative arts." Each full-page image is suitable for coloring by children at playtime or in a classroom setting. Easy to read information on many popular patron saints is included, as is the feast day of each saint. Teachers will find this coloring book a valuable teaching tool. There is also an author preface and an article about Marie Romero Cash by well-known journalist, Kay Lockridge. Born in Santa Fe, Marie Romero Cash has been a Santera (saint-maker) for over thirty years. Her award-winning works are in major museums and private collections throughout the United States, Mexico, Africa and The Vatican. She has written several books and magazine articles on the culture and religion of Northern New Mexico and has lectured widely on the subject for the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities.

Book excerpt: London, England: Ahmed is a handsome and exceptionally charming jet-setter with a taste for fine wine and an eye for beautiful women. His true passion however is something far more sinister. Two years following the end of the second Gulf War, he detonates a bomb in a popular London dance club. This vicious act is but the first in a series of increasingly brutal attacks he executes throughout Europe, confounding Police agencies on both sides of the Atlantic. Acapulco, Mexico: A team of Mexican rebels is hired to kidnap several small groups of American tourists, and then turn them over to a wealthy Saudi Oil baron. Fancying himself as the next Bin Laden, the man who calls himself Mohammed intends to use the hostages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the U.S. Government. Virginia, USA: Marie, the beautiful long-time girlfriend of a well connected U.S. Congressman hatches a plot more treacherous than anything previously attempted on American soil. She is Ahmed and Mohammed's beloved younger sister and the inspiration for their acts of terror. A group of friends take a long awaited vacation trip to Acapulco. Their world is abruptly torn apart when half of the group fall victim to Saudi kidnappers. With the U.S. government reluctant to alienate its Saudi allies over the abductions and unwilling to cut a deal with the terrorists, these very ordinary Americans are forced to take matters into their own hands. They are assisted by some unlikely new friends including an aging millionaire, his two buffoonish bodyguards and a former CIA analyst who now makes his living as a drug trafficker in the Middle East. Together they must find and rescue their loved ones and in the process prevent a cataclysm that could alter the course of U.S. history.
