Book Synopsis Stratigraphic reservoir characterization for petroleum geologists, geophysicists, and engineers by : Roger M. Slatt
Download or read book Stratigraphic reservoir characterization for petroleum geologists, geophysicists, and engineers written by Roger M. Slatt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-11-03 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reservoir characterization as a discipline grew out of the recognition that more oil and gas could be extracted from reservoirs if the geology of the reservoir was understood. Prior to that awakening, reservoir development and production were the realm of the petroleum engineer. In fact, geologists of that time would have felt slighted if asked by corporate management to move from an exciting exploration assignment to a more mundane assignment working with an engineer to improve a reservoir's performance. Slowly, reservoir characterization came into its own as a quantitative, multidisciplinary endeavor requiring a vast array of skills and knowledge sets. Perhaps the biggest attractor to becoming a reservoir geologist was the advent of fast computing, followed by visualization programs and theaters, all of which allow young geoscientists to practice their computing skills in a highly technical work environment. Also, the discipline grew in parallel with the evolution of data integration and the advent of asset teams in the petroleum industry. Finally, reservoir characterization flourished with the quantum improvements that have occurred in geophysical acquisition and processing techniques and that allow geophysicists to image internal reservoir complexities.

Book Synopsis Exploring the Earth's Crust by : C. Prodehl
Download or read book Exploring the Earth's Crust written by C. Prodehl and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2012 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contains a comprehensive, worldwide history of seismological studies of the Earth's crust using controlled sources from 1850 to 2005. Essentially all major seismic projects on land and the most important oceanic projects are covered. The time period 1850 to 1939 is presented as a general synthesis, and from 1940 onward the history and results are presented in separate chapters for each decade, with the material organized by geographical region. Each chapter highlights the major advances achieved during that decade in terms of data acquisition, processing technology, and interpretation methods. For all major seismic projects, the authors provide specific details on field observations, interpreted crustal cross sections, and key references. They conclude with global and continental-scale maps of all field measurements and interpreted Moho contours. An accompanying DVD contains important out-of-print publications and an extensive collection of controlled-source data, location maps, and crustal cross sections."--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Applied Sedimentology by : Richard C. Selley
Download or read book Applied Sedimentology written by Richard C. Selley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-05-24 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three types of rock—igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Sedimentary rocks form from the weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition of older rocks. Applied Sedimentology describes the formation, transportation and deposition of sediment, and the post-depositional processes that change soft sediment into sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks include sandstones, limestones and mudstones. All the world's coal, most of its water and fossil fuels, and many mineral deposits occur in sedimentary rocks. Applied Sedimentology shows how the study of sediments aids the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons.* Completely revised edition; Like its precursor, it describes sediments from sand grains to sedimentary basins; Features up-to date account and critique of sequence and cyclostratigraphy * Extensively illustrated with photos and remotely sensed sea bed images describing sedimentary processes, products and depositional systems; Color plates illustrate sediment textures, lithologies, pore types, diagenetic textures, and carbonate and clastic sequence stratigraphic models* Emphasises the applications of sedimentology to the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores and hydrocarbons* Extensive references and up-to-date bibliography for further study

Book Synopsis The Benthic Boundary Layer by : Bernard P. Boudreau
Download or read book The Benthic Boundary Layer written by Bernard P. Boudreau and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-22 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benthic boundary layer is the zone of water and sediment immediately adjacent to the bottom of a sea, lake, or river. This zone is of considerable interest to biologists, geochemists, sedimentologists, and engineers because of very strong gradients of energy, dissolved and solid chemical components, suspended matter, and the number of organisms that live there. It is, for example, the sink for anthropogenic substances and the home of microscopic plant life that provides the nutrients that determine fish populations--and ultimately the size of the fisheries. This book of original chapters edited by Professors Boudreau and Jorgensen, both leading researchers in the field, will meet the need for an up-to-date, definitive text/reference on measurements, techniques, and models for transport and biochemical processes in the benthic boundary layer. Each chapter provides a comprehensive review of a selected field, with illustrated examples from the authors' own work. The book will appeal to professionals and researchers in marine biology, marine chemistry, marine engineering, and sedimentology.

Most of the equip way what I believe is the minimum that the senior undergraduate and beginning postgraduate student in ment needed for those I describe can be found in the kit the Earth sciences should nowadays know of general chen, bathroom or general laboratory , and the materials most often required - sand, clay and flow-marking physics, in order to be able to understand (rather than form merely a descriptive knowledge of) the smaller substances - are cheaply and widely available. Book excerpt: After the devastating dust storms that swept across Northern China in 2000, there has been increased interest in studying experiences with dust storm mitigation, prevention, forecasting and control. This book contains a range of essays and case studies written by a group of Chinese and international experts with experience in the field of dryland rehabilitation and ecological restoration of desertified lands at the global and local level. Issues discussed include: the experiences in Canada and the US during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930's; the desertification of areas on the continents of Australia and Africa; case studies from Asia which look at the consequences of the large-scale implementation of policies and land-use practices; and methods for the forecasting, mitigation and prevention of dust storms.
