This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a Contextual Reference Guide that provides a brief synopsis of the overall energy of the Odu Ifa. It has been compiled based on my in-depth research in the written literature and guidance provided by established and competent Babalawo and Awo. It is comprised of the descriptive person-hood of the Sacred verses as well as some taboos and sacrifices. This Contextual Reference Guide is in no way exhaustive and should be used coupled with information and research primarily focused on the rituals, medicines, and sacrifices of the Odu Ifa. Future publications related to this Contextual Reference Guide may include specific rituals, medicines, and sacrifices however they will come with further research and of course the guidance of well-established and competent Babalawo', Iyanifa' and Awo'. This book has been written in the hopes that it will assist those born in the western diaspora to contextualize and digest the information presented in the original texts of the sacred Scriptures of Odu Ifa. Many of us rightfully travel to Nigeria for our initiations however the Western lifestyle does not often provide the time in which it would take to study under our Elders long enough to gather a comprehensive understanding of these verses. This book is my attempt to assist us with this work. I pray that it be accepted by my Elders and respected by my colleagues in Ifa. As an American Iyanifa, it is with respect for this tradition that I have undertaken this heavy and very important task and I have not done so alone. I would like to give thanks to those Priests that have contributed their knowledge and wisdom to my work. Thank you and enjoy.

Book Synopsis Divining the Self by : Velma E. Love
Download or read book Divining the Self written by Velma E. Love and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divining the Self weaves elements of personal narrative, myth, history, and interpretive analysis into a vibrant tapestry that reflects the textured, embodied, and performative nature of scripture and scripturalizing practices. Velma Love examines the Odu—the Yoruba sacred scriptures—along with the accompanying mythology, philosophy, and ritual technologies engaged by African Americans. Drawing from the personal narratives of African American Ifa practitioners along with additional ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Oyotunji African Village, South Carolina, and New York City, Love’s work explores the ways in which an ancient worldview survives in modern times. Divining the Self also takes up the challenge of determining what it means for the scholar of religion to study scripture as both text and performance. This work provides an excellent case study of the sociocultural phenomenon of scripturalizing practices.

Now, for the first time, the 256 sacred stories of the Ifa Oracle have been translated into English by Dr. Afolabi Epega, a fifth-generation Nigerian babalawo, or Ifa priest. Both classic and Western interpretations by Dr. Epega and American babalawo Philip Neimark clearly illuminate each translation, setting the context for using and understanding the power of Ifa wisdom in modern life.

Download or read book City of 201 Gods written by Jacob Olupona and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author focuses on one of the most important religious centers in Africa: the Yoruba city of Ile-Ife in southwest Nigeria. The spread of Yoruba traditions in the African diaspora has come to define the cultural identity of millions of black and white people in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, and the United States. He describes how the city went from great prominence to near obliteration and then rose again as a contemporary city of gods. Throughout, he corroborates the indispensable linkages between religion, cosmology, migration, and kinship as espoused in the power of royal lineages, hegemonic state structure, gender, and the Yoruba sense of place.

Book Synopsis Deep Knowledge by : Oludamini Ogunnaike
Download or read book Deep Knowledge written by Oludamini Ogunnaike and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth, comparative study of two of the most popular and influential intellectual and spiritual traditions of West Africa: Tijani Sufism and Ifa. Employing a unique methodological approach that thinks with and from—rather than merely about—these traditions, Oludamini Ogunnaike argues that they contain sophisticated epistemologies that provide practitioners with a comprehensive worldview and a way of crafting a meaningful life. Using theories belonging to the traditions themselves as well as contemporary oral and textual sources, Ogunnaike examines how both Sufism and Ifa answer the questions of what knowledge is, how it is acquired, and how it is verified. Or, more simply: What do you know? How did you come to know it? How do you know that you know? After analyzing Ifa and Sufism separately and on their own terms, the book compares them to each other and to certain features of academic theories of knowledge. By analyzing Sufism from the perspective of Ifa, Ifa from the perspective of Sufism, and the contemporary academy from the perspective of both, this book invites scholars to inhabit these seemingly “foreign” intellectual traditions as valid and viable perspectives on knowledge, metaphysics, psychology, and ritual practice. Unprecedented and innovative, Deep Knowledge makes a significant contribution to cross-cultural philosophy, African philosophy, religious studies, and Islamic studies. Its singular approach advances our understanding of the philosophical bases underlying these two African traditions and lays the groundwork for future study.
Download or read book Awo written by Awo Fá'lokun Fatunmbi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:
Download or read book Ori written by Awo Fá'Lokun Fatunmbi and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-01-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do I learn my purpose in life? What does God want for me? How can I fulfill my potential? While Awo Falokun Fatunmbi touched on Ifa's perspective of these issues in previous books, in Ori he covers them on a whole new level. The Ifa Model of Consciousness fills holes in Western models of Self/Higher Self/God and empowers living a life fully aligned with our higher self and spirit. The illusion of separation is stripped away and the obvious truth becomes clear: We are spiritual beings having a physical experience. Ori offers tools to incorporate these deep understandings into a balanced life filled with all of the blessings that were intended us from the womb. Joy, Love, Children, Health & Wealth are our Spiritual rights. Unlike some Faiths which may see them as distractions, Ifa sees these earthly blessings as symptoms of living in alignment with spirit. Learn to have these symptoms too!
