Book excerpt: Financial Times Business Book of the Month September 2017. Ryanair cancels over 700,000 bookings and its powerful PR juggernaut comes shuddering to a halt. For once, the airline's aggressive and flamboyant CEO, Michael O'Leary, is contrite and apologetic. A month later Ryanair announces increased passenger traffic for October, year-on-year growth and increased profits. Its share price soars. For the moment, it appears, a fundamental shake-up of Europe's biggest airline is off the table. But questions remain about the causes of the debacle and O'Leary's role in it. Michael O'Leary lifts the veil on the wildly successful and wildly controversial Ryanair CEO. Based on extensive research - including with close associates of O'Leary - the book examines O'Leary's personality, beliefs and obsessions and describes how these have moulded the business he runs. Written by a multi-award-winning journalist and broadcaster, with a thirty-year career covering business and current affairs, it is a fascinating insight into the business behind the man, and the man behind the business. 'Fascinating book ... very comprehensive' Eamon Dunphy, The Stand 'An indispensable guide for anyone who wants to understand not just where Michael O'Leary and Ryanair are coming from, but where they are going.' Sunday Business Post 'A frequently enlightening unauthorised biography ... entertaining' Irish Independent 'In a world of colourless corporate leaders, Ryanair's aggressive, mouthy chief executive provides catnip for journalists. Cooper, an award-winning Irish writer and reporter, makes the most of the opportunity to dissect his colourful subject' Book of the Month, The Financial Times

Book excerpt: The trade paperback of Ryanair, published in June 2004, has already sold nearly 20,000 copies and is in its sixth printing - testament to the fascination this maverick company has for both the business community and the general reader (and budget air traveller). In Ireland it has been a number-one bestseller (indeed, is still in the chart); here it is selling in significant quantities from airports and bookshops around the country. It remains the only book about the airline and its buccaneering chief executive, Michael O'Leary. With Ryanair continuing to expand, the battle for the low-cost airline market in Europe becoming ever more cutthroat, and O'Leary happy to do battle with everyone from airports (for their landing charges) to his own pilots (over pay and conditions) - and generate an endless stream of PR and news stories in the process - the B-format edition of Siobhan Creaton's book is fully updated to take account of all Ryanair's most recent history.

Book excerpt: Low cost competitors, who offer “good enough” products and services at very attractive prices, are currently significantly impacting the businesses of many leading companies, and some are starting to “move up” to challenge the traditional companies in their core markets. It’s only a matter of time before most companies will feel the pressure from these aggressive, cut-price competitors. Beating Low Cost Competition offers a step–by–step structured approach to help executives in traditional companies with premium brands think through the options for responding to their low cost rivals and select the most appropriate strategy to win in their chosen markets. By examining a wide-ranging group of companies from around the world, Adrian Ryans provides numerous examples of how different companies in different industries have responded to low cost competitors and analyses the effectiveness of their strategies. He also discusses the leadership and cultural challenges that many companies are facing as they take steps to respond to their low cost rivals. Ultimately, the insights gained from this book will lead to better and more profitable business decisions. Adrian Ryans is Professor of Marketing and Strategy at IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland. He has designed and taught on executive programs for organizations in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, including GE, Bank of Montreal, Medtronic, Deloitte, Borealis, Saurer, Vestas, IBM, Boeing, National Semiconductor, BioWare, ASML, Holcim, Varian, Hoechst, Amgen, Fluke, LSI Logic, Hutchison Port Holdings and Qualcomm. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,7, , course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: Ryanair is Europe’s leading low cost airline and offers the lowest fares on the airline market. But the question is how the small Irish company can count 103,000,000 international passengers in the fiscal year 2015, only 30 years after having been established. Why does Ryanair have a high recognition value for its brand, despite doing the advertising in-house and distributing only by using online channels? What is more, Ryanair does not offer customer loyalty programs, they do not have free drinks or food on-board; they even do not need external cleansing power for their fleet. And why no other low cost airline, like Easyjet or Lufthansa’s subsidiary Germanwings, overtook Ryanair’s competitive advantage to set the prices on the market? Actually they tried, but it still not working. What is so unique about the Irish Airline and how successful they compete with the airlines until today, will be demonstrated further in this assignment using the SWOT analysis.

Book excerpt: Michael O'Leary is a business giant. He transformed Ryanair from a loss-making joke of an Irish carrier into one of the most valuable airlines in the world, and in the process he has revolutionized the very nature of commercial aviation. In this, the first biography of O'Leary, Alan Ruddock portrays the man in three dimensions and examines the business miracle - often talked about but poorly understood - that O'Leary has wrought. 'Ruddock's fast-paced retelling of Ryanair's rise and rise confirms O'Leary's insistence that his success has little to do with the management maxims of business gurus and everything to do with graft and ruthless attention to detail' Observer 'Probably the definitive Ryanair story ... a good read' Sunday Independent 'The fullest and most accurate picture of O'Leary to date' Irish Daily Mail 'Unlike previous books which simply chart the growth of the airline, this one is bound to get under O'Leary's skin because it reveals a great deal about his hugely driven character' Irish Independent 'Ruddock is good on the flavour of the man, a bundle of energy whose two favourite words start with an F and an S (they aren't flower and sugar)' Irish Examiner

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of the report is to undertake a situational analysis of Ryanair. The situational analysis will be undertaken through the use of models and frameworks such as STEEPLE, Porter's Five Forces model, McKinsey’s 7S framework and SWOT analysis. Thereafter, the challenges facing Ryanair will be explored. Secondly, the report will provide a logical and clear strategic plan that is linked to the findings of the situational analysis. The strategic plan will be developed to assist Ryanair to keep a competitive advantage and achieve the strategic objectives of the company. Ryanair is an Irish low-cost airline that was founded in 1984. In the 1st year of operation of the airline, over five thousand customers travelled between Ireland and London. By 1989, over 600,000 passengers were travelling via Ryanair. In the initial 4 years of the operation of the company, the company made a combined loss of £20 million. The management of the company changed in 1990 when Michael O’Leary was appointed as the CEO. O’Leary made several changes to Ryanair thus adopting a no-frills operational model as well as the reduction of the routes. In the next 6 years, the fleet was increased to over 21 leading to an increase in customers due to the low prices. Following the deregulation of EU air transportation regulations that restricted the low pricing policy of the firm, the firm took advantage and was able to increase its profitability and market share in low-cost airlines.

Book excerpt: In this authorised biography of one of the most remarkable Irishmen of the twentieth century, Richard Aldous is independent in his judgements and frank in his examination of his subject's shortcomings and eccentricities. But most of all, he writes with verve and pace. Tony Ryan was born in a railwayman's cottage and rose to enormous success, overseeing the spectacular making of two business fortunes and the dramatic loss of one. After an early spell in Aer Lingus, he set up an airline leasing company, Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA), which had its headquarters in Shannon and quickly became the largest such enterprise in the world. Ryan was a hard taskmaster and the company reflected his ferocious work ethic. Yet, despite a stellar board of directors, a botched and poorly timed Initial Public Offering in the 1990s saw GPA crash and burn. Ryan lost almost everything. All that remained was a little airline running massive deficits. Ryan set about turning Ryanair around, putting in one of his assistants, Michael O'Leary, to help knock it into shape. The rest is history. Ryan remade his fortune, lived lavishly and elegantly, was a generous patron of the arts, and in every respect larger than life. His spirit is one that Ireland needs more than ever today. As the nation strives for its own recovery, it can find inspiration in the story of how one of its most famous sons rose and fell, and then rose again. Not one to stand still or lament mistakes, Tony Ryan's determination never to give up is the real lesson of this story. He was in so many ways Ireland's Aviator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace Law and Policy Series, Volume 23 In an increasingly competitive air transport environment, airlines are forced to adapt their business models, including employment conditions, in order to maintain and possibly enhance their presence in the market. The airline market is cyclical, and each traffic recovery is accompanied by numerous social developments; air laws and social regulations are becoming closer. This practical and thoroughly researched book brings together, for the first time, the topical legal issues relating to the employment of civil aviation personnel. Considering the latest publications, doctrinal opinions, legal bases, and case law, the author and several distinguished contributors cover such issues and topics as the following: EU social regulations in relation to third States; civil aviation safety rules that have an impact on the working conditions of crew members; social security systems applicable to crew members; competent court and labour law applicable to crew members’ employment relationships; key questions pertaining to posting crew members across borders; social issues related to the leasing of aircraft, including crew; data protection of crew members; atypical forms of employment in the aviation industry; right to strike for crew members; employment consequences of transfer of undertakings in civil aviation; and role of trade unions and collective labour agreements in air transport. The author also traces the process of liberalisation of the EU air transport market and its consequences on the operational structures of airlines and on the working conditions of crew members. For ease of reading, the annex to this book contains excerpts of the relevant legal texts. Lawyers, officials, business people, policymakers and academics with a professional interest in aviation law will find concise yet comprehensive guidance in this book that will help them to understand and address social and legal issues in the ever-changing world of aviation.

Book excerpt: The last few decades have witnessed substantial liberalization trends in various industries and countries. Starting with the deregulation of the US airline industry in 1978, regulatory restructuring took place in further network industries such as telecommunications, electricity or railways in various countries around the world. Although most of the liberalization movements were initially triggered by the worrying performances of the respective regulatory frameworks, increases in competition and corresponding improvements in allocative and productive efficiency were typically associated with the respective liberalization efforts. From an academic perspective, the transition from regulated industries to liberalized industries has attracted a substantial amount of research reflected in many books and research articles which can be distilled to three main questions: (1) What are the forces that have given rise to regulatory reform? (2) What is the structure of the regulatory change which has occurred to date and is likely to occur in the immediate future? (3) What have been the effects on industry efficiency, prices and profits of the reforms which have occurred to date? Liberalization in Aviation brings together renowned academics and practitioners from around the world to address all three questions and draw policy conclusions. The book is divided into five sections, in turn dealing with aspects of competition in various liberalized markets, the emergence and growth of low-cost carriers, horizontal mergers and alliances, infrastructures, and concluding with economic assessments of liberalization steps so far and proposed steps in the future.

Book excerpt: In August 1963, one of the best-selling aircraft of British civil aviation, the BAC One-Eleven, took to the skies for the first time. With an order book for sixty aircraft, more than half were from the United States, which was an unprecedented situation for a British civil aircraft. The first project for the newly formed British Aircraft Corporation, the One-Eleven was wholly designed and built by BAC, and remained in production throughout the entire seventeen-year history of the organisation, performing strongly even when profits were at a low. After flying commercially in Europe for the last time in March 2002, here the One-Eleven is celebrated in style fifty years after its maiden flight. In this revised edition, Stephen Skinner combines original research with fascinating black-and-white and colour images, as well as detailed appendices, to consider what transpired in those five decades and the place the One-Eleven holds in British aviation history.
