Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals Reference Book presents a convenient summary of data concerning to metallurgy. It discusses the guidance for dealing with laboratory accidents. It addresses the radioactive isotopes and radiation sources. Some of the topics covered in the book are the x-ray crystallography; excitation of x-rays; rotating crystal methods; powder methods; the wide angle method; the Laue method; the intensity of x-ray reflections; derivation of accurate unit cell dimensions in crystals; and the schoenflies system of point- and space-group notation. The Hermann-Mauguin system of point- and space-group notation is fully covered. The structures of metals, metalloids, and there compounds is discussed in detail. The text describes in depth the metallurgically important minerals. The metallic systems of unlimited mutual solubility are presented completely. A chapter is devoted to the respiratory syncytial virus. Another section focuses on the physical properties of molten salts. The book can provide useful information to mineralogists, chemists, students, and researchers.

Download or read book Pyrite written by David Rickard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people have heard of pyrite, the brassy yellow mineral sometimes known as fool's gold. Pyrite behaves like stone and shines like metal, and its dual nature makes it a source of both metals and sulfur. Despite being the most common sulfide mineral on the earth's surface, pyrite's bright crystals have attracted the attention of many different cultures, and its nearly identical visual appearance to gold has led to tales of fraud, trickery, and claims of alchemy. Pyrite occupies a unique place in human history: it became an integral part of mining culture in America during the 19th century, and it has a presence in ancient Sumerian texts, Greek philosophy, and medieval poetry, becoming a symbol for anything overvalued. In Pyrite, geochemist and author David Rickard blends basic science and historical narrative to describe the many unique ways pyrite is integral to our world. He explains the basic science of oxidation, showing us why the mineral looks like gold, and inspects death zones of present oceans where pyrite-related hydrogen sulfide destroys oxygen in the waters. Rickard analyzes pyrite's role in manufacturing sulfuric acid and discusses the significant appearance of the mineral in literature, history, and the development of societies. The mineral's influence extends from human evolution and culture, through science and industry, to our understanding of ancient, modern, and future earth environments. Energetic and accessible, Pyrite is the first book to show readers the history and science of a mineral that helped make the modern world.
Book Synopsis Laterite Soil Engineering by : M Gidigasu
Download or read book Laterite Soil Engineering written by M Gidigasu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laterite Soil Engineering is one of a few books about solving engineering problems with the help of engineering pedology. This book presents the latest information on the laterite soils' geotechnical characteristics and engineering behavior. It shows that laterite soils are different from natural soils and that most laterite soils can be evaluated for engineering purposes using accepted theories and well-known test procedures for temperate-zone soils. This book also shows that modern concepts based on pedological considerations are very useful and take a logical approach to the identification and evaluation of laterite soils for engineering purposes. The first four chapters focus on reviewing information about the processes of tropical weathering and laterization. Chapter five summarizes information about the location, morphology and composition of laterite soils. Chapter six highlights the geotechnical implications of the pedogenic processes of tropical weathering, and it emphasizes the contribution of the results of these pedogenic processes to the deviations of engineering behavior of the problem of laterite soils. In addition, chapter seven discusses the influence of laterite soil genesis on the physic-chemical characteristics based on comparing the properties of three genetic soil groups formed under three different weathering conditions. Chapters eight through nineteen discuss the geotechnical characteristics and evaluation of laterite soils, and the effects of pedogenesis and soil-forming factors on the geotechnical and stabilization characteristics of laterite soils. The last chapter discusses the little information that exists on the application of laterite soils in engineering problems.
