But it is unfortunate when a few scribbling pens can lead a nation to false impressions. And here I would point out that the Russian immigrant to this country knows about as much of his own country as the average street pedlar in Whitechapel knows of the British Empire. I took some friends of mine one day to White chapel to demonstrate this very fact. I gave them leave to select their own subjects for examination. They found the man they wanted, and we sat down to talk. He was a well-dressed man who could read and write Russian. It lays no claim to be either exhaustive or even of any practical use to the serious student of the Russian Evolution. It is written for the ignorant, and with the object of helping them to decide whether they wish to take an interest in what is now happening in Russia, or not. I cannot take them into the house and show them all over it from floor to ceiling with the knowledge and authority of a master-builder all I can do is to open a small window and ask them to look through it and observe certain things, pointing out how far these things are typical of the whole and my hope is that the glimpses I have given them will enable them to decide whether they wish to go and knock at the front door and investigate for themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia Svobodnaya Rossia - Free Russia-is a word on every lip in that great country; at once the Name and Hope of the new empire born of the Crimean war. In past times Russia was free, even as Germany and France were free. She fell before Asiatic hordes; and the Tartar system lasted, in spirit, if not in form, until the war; but since that conflict ended, the old Russia has been born again. This new country - hoping to be pacific, meaning to be Free - is what I have tried to paint. My journeys, just completed, carried me from the Polar Sea to the Ural Mountains, from the mouth of the Vistula to the Straits of Yeni Kale, including visits to the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. My object being to paint the Living People, I have much to say about pilgrims, monks, and parish priests; about village justice, and patriarchal life; about beggars, tramps, and sectaries; about Kozaks, Kalmuks, and Kirghiz; about workmen's artels, burgher rights, and the division of land; about students' revolts and soldiers' grievances; in short, about the Human Forces which underlie and shape the external politics of our time. Two journeys made in previous years have helped me to judge the reforms which are opening out the Japan-like empire of Nicolas into the Free Russia of the reigning prince. Within the last year we have already witnessed the prologue of the great drama which is about to be played. TO those who are not intimately acquainted with Russia and her people, this prologue must have appeared incoherent and almost impossible to under stand, for the best of reasons, that the actors did not know themselves the meaning of the parts which they were acting. It was a case of irresponsible followers rushing behind incoherent leaders. The truth is that the Russians had suddenly awakened out Of the most ghastly nightmare, and, still dazed and only half awake, the nightmare still vivid in their minds, they had but one thought - to rush madly headlong, in order to escape from its horrors. They rushed about, anywhere, anyhow, not caring where they went so long as they ran. In the same way does a patient, suffering from cardiac distress, rush about the room to try and escape from the agony which he endures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia From Within These pages will come as a shock to some very sincere friends of Russia. Those who confound the Russian Nation with the Bureaucratic System by which she is governed, will be inclined to dispute a number of apparently improbable facts which I have cited in order to bring out the character of Contemporary Tsardom. It is my duty to put them on their guard against such generous impulses. This book is not a pamphlet, but an account of the general conditions prevailing at the out break of the Russian Revolution. In these, the personal action of the Executive - Tsar, Princes, Ministers, and Generals - is the capital factor. Analysis of this Execu tive was, therefore, incumbent on me, by juxtaposition of the most typical facts relating to its action. The facts do not make pretty reading. But they are authentic, historical, exact. And it is facts alone that are of importance. The personages themselves are uninterest ing, and I regard them merely as the casual actors of a historic part. From this standpoint, therefore, I discuss them freely, solely in view of the accuracy of the picture I have drawn of contemporary Russian politics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Reform It is quite impossible for any one man to make an adequate study of all the chief aspects of Russian life. It has rather been my object to suggest to future students some of the many important and fascinating questions which demand special study. The history, the literature, the geography, the economy, of Russia might each absorb the interest of a number of genuine students. Russia has for a long time been almost the chief factor of our foreign policy; her Imperial importance challenges our attention; her industrial future cannot be a matter of indifference to us. The difficulties of a political study of Russia are very great. The abnormal bias of the Government against all publicity has long made it very difficult for Russian writers to deal adequately and objectively even with some of the most innocent statistics. There also exists amongst the educated class a spirit of antagonism to the Government which often diminishes the value, not only of such publications as may have evaded the censorship, but even of the most simple statement of fact made in private conversation. I have therefore found it necessary to sometimes confine myself to that which I could see for myself or learn at first hand from those persons who were best qualified to inform me on a given point, checking their statements by what I was able to gather from others. This, of course, meant that I had to select certain typical districts for investigation. The answers to my questions were recorded as soon as possible after I received them. I also had many talks with the chief leaders of the different political parties, and it may be assumed that, in the latter part of the book, I am often summarising the statements made to me by the persons chie y concerned. For the accuracy of my reports. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia of the Russians It is this natural environment - so different from the snug compactness of an island with an even temperate climate that determines the main lines of Russian historical develop ment. The thousand odd years of Russian history Show how a people living on the south-west corner of the plain learned the plain's secret, discovered its rhythm, its steady alternation between relaxation and effort, between movement and repose, gradually secured possession of the overland trade - routes and, step by step, transforming commercial advantage into political power, finally subdued all its rivals and created an Empire whose limits are nearly everywhere coterminous with those of the plain, while in the Caucasus and Siberia they overpass them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Scientific and artistic work of generations will be required to complete it. Not even in the Russian language have the various phases of the revo lution been given adequate study. Many a field, such as the reflection of the revolution in Russian belles Iettres, to which parts of this book are devoted, have not hitherto been investigated at all. Moreover, the work of a Russian writing in English is greatly embarrassed by the consciousness of the fact that the Russian char acter and Russian history are little familiar on this side of the Atlantic. Under such circumstances, the present work can be only a review of the great movement in its most significant manifestations, and an attempt to convey to the American reader a better understanding of the character, the motives and the aspirations of the various parts of the Russian nation engaged in the revolution.
