Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia and Reform It is quite impossible for any one man to make an adequate study of all the chief aspects of Russian life. It has rather been my object to suggest to future students some of the many important and fascinating questions which demand special study. The history, the literature, the geography, the economy, of Russia might each absorb the interest of a number of genuine students. Russia has for a long time been almost the chief factor of our foreign policy; her Imperial importance challenges our attention; her industrial future cannot be a matter of indifference to us. The difficulties of a political study of Russia are very great. The abnormal bias of the Government against all publicity has long made it very difficult for Russian writers to deal adequately and objectively even with some of the most innocent statistics. There also exists amongst the educated class a spirit of antagonism to the Government which often diminishes the value, not only of such publications as may have evaded the censorship, but even of the most simple statement of fact made in private conversation. I have therefore found it necessary to sometimes confine myself to that which I could see for myself or learn at first hand from those persons who were best qualified to inform me on a given point, checking their statements by what I was able to gather from others. This, of course, meant that I had to select certain typical districts for investigation. The answers to my questions were recorded as soon as possible after I received them. I also had many talks with the chief leaders of the different political parties, and it may be assumed that, in the latter part of the book, I am often summarising the statements made to me by the persons chie y concerned. For the accuracy of my reports. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia Svobodnaya Rossia - Free Russia-is a word on every lip in that great country; at once the Name and Hope of the new empire born of the Crimean war. In past times Russia was free, even as Germany and France were free. She fell before Asiatic hordes; and the Tartar system lasted, in spirit, if not in form, until the war; but since that conflict ended, the old Russia has been born again. This new country - hoping to be pacific, meaning to be Free - is what I have tried to paint. My journeys, just completed, carried me from the Polar Sea to the Ural Mountains, from the mouth of the Vistula to the Straits of Yeni Kale, including visits to the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. My object being to paint the Living People, I have much to say about pilgrims, monks, and parish priests; about village justice, and patriarchal life; about beggars, tramps, and sectaries; about Kozaks, Kalmuks, and Kirghiz; about workmen's artels, burgher rights, and the division of land; about students' revolts and soldiers' grievances; in short, about the Human Forces which underlie and shape the external politics of our time. Two journeys made in previous years have helped me to judge the reforms which are opening out the Japan-like empire of Nicolas into the Free Russia of the reigning prince. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' History of Russia In a book for young people a long list of authorities may be spared; it is sufficient to state that the facts have been drawn from the best sources, - Russian, German, French, and English. In the first part Russian names have been done away with English equivalents take their places. A table follows for convenience. In all cases difficult words are avoided so far as possible, and it is hoped that this Young Folks' History of Russia is at least readable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life: In Town and Country Russian life, the only phase of the national existence that the ordinary visitor ever sees, whether on business or pleasure bent, is the outgrt of the reforms instituted by Peter the Great, and copied from much that we are familiar with in Western Europe. The modern development of Russia has, it is true, grown with wonderful rapidity of late years, but it is almost entirely confined to the towns and the regions easily accessible by the railway. New railways are constantly being laid down, but Russia covers so vast an area that a glance at the map will sufi'ice to show how large a pro portion of the country must remain for many years outside their influence. Less than twelve per cent. Of the nation reside in towns, not eight per cent. Near enough to urban centres to be influenced by town life, while the remaining eighty per cent., people of every rank of life from nobles to peasants, dwell in regions that modern life and thought have as yet hardly touched to any appreciable extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Revolution Aspects The aim of this book is not to give a history or interpretation of the Revolution in Russia; but to record in narrative form the more striking events seen by a newspaper correspondent long familiar with the country, people and language. Many books purport ing to give a rationale or interpretation of these events have already appeared; and these are good or bad according as the writers were equipped with a qualify ing knowledge of Russian conditions. As far as I know, I was the only foreigner who witnessed some of the occurrences, and visited some of the places here described; and the amount of material collected directly and therefore not to be omitted was so great that for the causes, the inner course and the future prospects of the Revolution there has been little space. Further, the time has not yet come for treating the Revolution in historical perspective and analyzing its finer elements. Russia is to-day in a state of flux, probably indeed still early in the prolonged process that will in future be called her Revolution; and no final judgment upon the events so far accomplished can be passed until the lines of ultimate progress are more clearly revealed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917. Scientific and artistic work of generations will be required to complete it. Not even in the Russian language have the various phases of the revo lution been given adequate study. Many a field, such as the reflection of the revolution in Russian belles Iettres, to which parts of this book are devoted, have not hitherto been investigated at all. Moreover, the work of a Russian writing in English is greatly embarrassed by the consciousness of the fact that the Russian char acter and Russian history are little familiar on this side of the Atlantic. Under such circumstances, the present work can be only a review of the great movement in its most significant manifestations, and an attempt to convey to the American reader a better understanding of the character, the motives and the aspirations of the various parts of the Russian nation engaged in the revolution. The French Revolution is the direct progenitor of the Russian revolutionary move ment. The democratic doctrines which ema nated from France after the Revolution, spread ing throughout Europe and sowing the seeds of democracy, were destined to penetrate Russia in a most peculiar manner. Napoleon's inva sion of Russia created the soil on which the future Russian revolutionary movement was to grow )that invasion resulted in a Russian army S invasion of France. The Russian army of a century ago was officered by educated young aristocrats. The customary education of the Russian nobility was then wholly French. The current ideas in France could not but deeply affect the Russians, whose prolonged stay in Western Europe had already imbued most of them with the radical theories of the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Politics This book attempts to put the English reader in a position to understand the conditions of life and the problems of government that exist in the Russia of to day. Some knowledge of the aspects of the country, the ethnological descent of its inhabitants, and the story of the rise and maintenance of their autocratic form of government, seems necessary as a preliminary to such understanding, and the first three chapters of the volume are devoted to an exposition of these matters; but since modern political life is the subject of the book, they have not been allowed to expand into greater detail than will be helpful to the object in View. The reforms of the early years of Alexander II. Have been treated much more fully, for almost all the political questions of the day in Russia are intimately connected with them and with their subsequent partial abrogation witnessed during the reactionary period of the last quarter of a century.
