Book excerpt: This study analyzes two related aspects: households' participation in off-farm employment as a livelihood strategy and the effects of participation in off-farm employment on households' adoption of labor intensive soil conserving technologies. Several factors are significant but spatial econometric analysis reveals that model parameters vary substantially across space. In addition, households supplying labor off-farm are generally associated with reduced adoption of terraces, hedgerows and cut-offs. The negative impact of supplying labor off-farm can be moderately cushioned when households also hire labor to work on the construction or maintenance of soil conserving structures. However, it is shown that hired labor is not a perfect substitute for households' own labor and does not fully off-set the effect of a household's off-farm labor supply.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a striking scarcity of work conducted on rural labour markets in the developing world, particularly in Africa. This book aims to fill this gap by bringing together a group of contributors who boast substantial field experience researching rural wage employment in various developing countries. It provides critical perspectives on mainstream approaches to rural/agrarian development, and analysis of agrarian change and rural transformations from a long-term perspective. This book challenges the notion that rural areas in low- and middle-income countries are dominated by self-employment. It purports that this conventional view is largely due to the application of conceptual frameworks and statistical conventions that are ill-equipped to capture labour market participation. The contributions in this book offer a variety of methodological lessons for the study of rural labour markets, focusing in particular on the use of mixed methods in micro-level field research, and more emphasis on capturing occupation multiplicity. The emphasis on context, history, and specific configurations of power relations affecting rural labour market outcomes are key and reoccurring features of this book. This analysis will help readers think about policy options to improve the quantity and quality of rural wage employment, their impact on the poorest rural people, and their political feasibility in each context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of credit has long occupied a central place in development strategies. Rural credit institutions are more than an instrument of intermediation, they also handle risk, mobilize and disseminate information about market and technology. Given the informational problems and innate disadvantages of rural credit markets, the rationale for laissez-faire and liberalization is by no means based on a sound understanding of the state's role in redressing market failures. This study examines the rural credit market in China, its impacts on agricultural transformation and the state's role in the functioning of markets. The particular objectives are to identify the determinants of credit rationing in both formal and informal sectors, to show the extent of credit rationing, to reveal the dynamic role of institutional lending in agricultural transformation, and to understand the challenges in developing efficient institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are about four million peasant families in Tanzania. They farm on the smallest scale, the average farm being two acres in size. The principal agricultural equipment is the hand hoe. Since the onset of the colonial era, those in authority have pursued policies to dominate the peasantry. It is argued that the small scale of operations has contributed to the widespread poverty among farmers. There is still good agricultural land that is not farmed, but the current land tenure of peasants reproduces itself on new farmland. The conclusion is that in order to accelerate agricultural development, land tenure must be institutionalized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper No. 370. Local land users and officials often have conflicting perceptions of and responses to land degradation issues. This causes problems for officials in diagnosing and addressing the issue and is a major constraint on the successful implementation of policies and projects to address land degradation. This study looks at the perception and response gap between officials and land users in the diagnosis and remedy of land degradation. It also examines the dynamics of the loss of soil fertility and low productivity at the village level. The study's findings will help shape investment programs to enhance land productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book excerpt: The West Usambara Mountains in Tanzania are severely affected by soil degradation caused by water erosion and to some extent by harvesting of tuber, bulb and root crops. The problem of soil degradation in the area has triggered adverse effect on crop productivity and is a serious threat to livelihood. Many scientific SWC measures such as bench and Fanya Juu terraces, cut off drains, contour strips and agroforestry have been promoted in the area to curb the problem. However, these technologies were rejected or minimally adopted because most of them were laborious and expensive. Thus, small holder farmers use their own local SWC measures namely miraba grass strips, micro ridges and stone bunds as an integral part of their farming systems but with little success. Surprisingly, such measures were never a subject of scientific writing to allow improvements be made. The current study attempted to explore the constraints to high crop yields under indigenous SWC measures and providing their remedial solutions to effectively controlling soil degradation and improving crop yields in the area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural adjustment efforts under way since the early 1980s have emphasized the liberalization of agricultural prices and markets and have led to a vigorous debate about the appropriate roles of the private and public sectors. This paper examines the causes of state intervention prior to independence as well as post-independence experience with marketing parastatals and cooperatives in Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal and Tanzania. This analysis is followed by an overview of the content and outcomes of the marketing and pricing liberalization programs. The focus is on the pricing and marketing of traditional export and food crops, which in these countries constitute well over 90 percent of the area harvested, value added and employment created in agriculture. The paper is not concerned with dairy, livestock or horticultural crops - areas in which government intervention has been less obtrusive and in which the private sector has played an important role.
