Download or read book Rumors written by Jean-Noel Kapferer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rumors may be the oldest medium of mass communication of information or ideas. Even before there were newspapers, radio, or television, rumors communicated by word-of-mouth made and shattered reputations, and set off riots and wars. Yet contrary to predictions, rumors continue to thrive, in spite of and parallel to mass media. What accounts for the puzzling persistence and continuing significance of this little-studied social phenomenon? Jean-No;el Kapferer examines the theory and practice of rumors, focusing on specific areas such as entertainment, criminal behavior, business and finance, and politics. He describes the kinds of conditions that give birth to rumors, why we believe them, and the hidden messages they convey. Kapferer points out that rumors frequently serve useful social purposes and present rich examples. He speculates about how rumors can be controlled, changed, and prevented. Drawing upon contributions of disciplines ranging from psychology to history, and integrating the insights of Europeans with the latest work of American researchers, this is the most comprehensive examination of rumors, gossip, and urban legends yet published. Translated into nine languages, this edition was updated with advances in theory and research since the book's original French publication in 1987. Its brisk, accessible style makes the book of interest to psychologists, economists, political scientists, sociologists, and folklore analysts, as well as the general reader who is curious about the origins of this fascinating social phenomenon.

Fans debate whether Terry Bradshaw or Ben Roethlisberger is the better quarterback and what the legacy of Barry Bonds is, while keeping Roberto Clemente among their most cherished icons. Take a deep dive into all of that and more and re-discover the best of the best in Pittsburgh sports history.

Book Synopsis Soldiers of Barbarossa by : Craig W.H. Luther
Download or read book Soldiers of Barbarossa written by Craig W.H. Luther and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope and scale of Operation Barbarossa—the German invasion of the Soviet Union—make it one of the pivotal events of the Second World War. Yet our understanding of both the military campaign as well as the “war of annihilation” conducted throughout the occupied territories depends overwhelmingly on “top-down” studies. The three million German soldiers who crossed the Soviet border and experienced this war are seldom the focus and are often entirely ignored. Who were these men and how did they see these events? Luther and Stahel, two of the leading experts on Operation Barbarossa, have reconstructed the 1941 campaign entirely through the letters (as well as a few diaries) of more than 200 German soldiers across all areas of the Eastern Front. It is an original perspective on the campaign, one of constant combat, desperate fear, bitter loss, and endless exertions. One learns the importance of comradeship and military training, but also reads the frightening racial and ideological justifications for the war and its violence, which at times lead to unrelenting cruelty and even mass murder. Soldiers of Barbarossa is a unique and sobering account of 1941, which includes hundreds of endnotes by Luther and Stahel providing critical context, corrections, and commentary.
Download or read book Aids in Africa written by Emily Mogeni and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Kwamboka Mogeni is a 33 year old Kenyan American who lives in Eagan Minnesota with her husband Erick and their two young sons Damien and Dylan. She developed her writing interest as early as 5 years old. She went to Kenya’s top girls’ school, The Kenya High School where she excelled in English and Literature. She later moved to the United States to study Computer Science at the State University of New York. She is currently a student at the Minnesota School of Business. Her father, who was her great inspiration died in March 2003 due to throat cancer. Three months later her mother died. This is what gave her the inspiration to write this book and share the story of what many young orphans in Kenya are undergoing. Her book is an insight to the rest of the world about what is happening deep down in the roots of an African village. There are millions of children who will never live to enjoy what the world has to offer due to their HIV status. These children most of whom are very bright and smart suffer quietly while living with their aging grandparents in the poverty stricken villages. Most of them lost their parents soon after birth or before their fifth birthday. This book is a great inspiration to many of these children. All they need is a roof on top of their heads, a warm meal and proper medical care.
