Book excerpt: THE MORE YOU KNOW ABOUT THE FUTURE, THE MORE THERE MAY BE TO FEAR. Tara Sheridan is the best criminal profiler around—and the most unconventional. Trained as a forensic psychologist, Tara also specializes in Tarot card reading. But she doesn’t need her divination skills to realize that the new assignment from her friend and sometime lover, Agent Harry Li, is a dangerous proposition in every way. Former Cold War operatives, all linked to a top-secret operation tracking the disposal of nuclear weapons in Russia, are disappearing. There are no bodies, and no clues to their whereabouts. Harry suspects a conspiracy to sell arms to the highest bidder. The cards—and Tara’s increasingly ominous dreams—suggest something darker. Even as Tara sorts through her feelings for Harry and her fractured relationship with the mysterious order known as Delphi’s Daughters, a killer is growing more ruthless by the day. And a nightmare that began decades ago in Chernobyl will reach a terrifying endgame that not even Tara could have foreseen. . . .

Book excerpt: Men would do anything for it…but one woman will determine its fate Steeped in legend, the Pearl of Palawan has a history marked by destruction, vengeance and love. But more important, the mythical black pearl is rumored to grant a power long coveted by mankind—immortality. It is a power men would risk dying to achieve. Sun, sand and scuba diving in the Philippines certainly sounded like an ideal vacation. But after a way-too-close-for-comfort encounter with a tiger shark, archaeologist Annja Creed finds herself drawn into a group of German divers. They are treasure hunters searching for the fabled pearl. Out of curiosity, Annja accompanies them. But when an old friend of hers turns up unexpectedly, she finds herself torn between her past and new acquaintances. The race is on to possess the pearl. But no one realizes the true nature of the artifact, or the danger it poses to them all.

Book excerpt: The sly fox, the greedy wolf and the diligent ant are among the most iconic and loved characters from Aesop’s fables. Who doesn’t love discovering knowledge in the ancient tales? It doesn’t matter if you are just learning to read or you are picking up a good night story for your children: Aesop’s fables offers a piece of wisdom to everyone. Aesop's fables feature animals, legendary creatures, plants, inanimate objects, or forces of nature that speak, solve problems, and generally have human characteristics. All the stories story lead to a particular moral lesson. Aesop (620–564 BCE) was a storyteller that was believed to have lived in Ancient Greece. He is celebrated for a number of fables now collectively known as Aesop's Fables. In the few scattered sources about his life, Aesop was described as a slave who by his cleverness acquires freedom and becomes an adviser to kings and city-states. Although Aesop's existence remains unclear, numerous tales credited to him were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day.

Book excerpt: In this superb thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins, Sigma Force must battle a group of rogue scientists who have unleashed a diabolical project that could bring about the extinction of mankind. Salvation . . . or annihilation? What if scientists could bio-engineer the next great world prophet—the next Buddha, Mohammed, or even Jesus? Would it mark the Second Coming or initiate a chain reaction leading to the end of mankind? Formed during the Cold War, a think tank of world scientists known as the JASONS have discovered a way to manipulate and enhance autistic children who show savant talents—mathematical geniuses, statistical masterminds, brilliant conceptual artists. Yet among their young patients a strange side-effect begins to arise. Before it can be analyzed fully, a rogue group of the JASONS begins their own secret experimentation with a cadre of the best children. Their goal, to create a world prophet for the new millennium, one who can be manipulated to create a new era of global peace . . . a peace on their own terms, that is. But such manipulation has grim consequences as a biological meltdown among the children begins to occur—turning the innocent into something far more frightening. To stop the JASONS before they engineer the extinction of mankind, Commander Gray Pierce of SIGMA Force races against time to solve a mystery that dates back to the first famous oracle of history—the Greek Oracle of Delphi. But can the past save the future?

Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables is a collection of fables credited to Aesop, a slave and story-teller believed to have lived in ancient Greece between 620 and 560 BCE. Of diverse origins, the stories associated with Aesop's name have descended to modern times through a number of sources. They continue to be reinterpreted in different verbal registers and in popular as well as artistic mediums. In Classical times there were various theorists who tried to differentiate these fables from other kinds of narration. They had to be short and unaffected; in addition, they are fictitious, useful to life and true to nature. In them could be found talking animals and plants, although humans interacting only with humans figure in a few. Typically they might begin with a contextual introduction, followed by the story, often with the moral underlined at the end. Setting the context was often necessary as a guide to the story's interpretation, as in the case of the political meaning of The Frogs Who Desired a King and The Frogs and the Sun. Sometimes the titles given later to the fables have become proverbial, as in the case of 'killing the Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs or the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. In fact some fables, such as The Young Man and the Swallow, appear to have been invented as illustrations of already existing proverbs. One theorist, indeed, went so far as to define fables as extended proverbs. In this they have an aetiological function, the explaining of origins such as, in another context, why the ant is a mean, thieving creature. Other fables, also verging on this function, are outright jokes, as in the case of The Old Woman and the Doctor, aimed at greedy practitioners of medicine.

Matsell is a fascinating insight into the language used by rogues and criminals, compiled by the former Chief of Police of New York City. Matsell's interest in the language of thieves began as a means of better understanding the criminals he was tasked with apprehending, but soon evolved into a laborious project of compiling a comprehensive lexicon of cant words and phrases. This language, with its roots in the ancient gypsy tongue, has evolved over time to become a vital tool for both criminals and law enforcement alike. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history and origins of this intriguing and often misunderstood subculture.

Lion also sees that Magenta is unwittingly making things happen around her but must keep it secret as some of his kind may see her as a threat. Then, on Halloween night Magenta suffers a massive hemorrhage in her brain.
