Download or read book Road Hogs written by Eric Peters and published by Motorbooks International. This book was released on 2011-06-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climb into one of America’s classic luxury cars from the 1960s and 1970s, swaddle yourself in yards and yards of fine Corinthian leather, scan the gigantic dashboard filled with esoteric dials and gauges that you can never hope to understand, twist the oversized ignition key, and listen to those coffee-can-sized pistons crank over in that enormous V-8 lurking under that vast expanse of hood. Feel that throbbing power burbling beneath an accelerator pedal the size of a Japanese hotel room, and you’ll know what once made the American auto industry great. Road Hogs celebrates this greatness, as expressed through the magnificent performance luxury cars that rolled out of Detroit during the classic era, like the Cadillac Eldorado, Chrysler 300, Buick Electra, Chevy Monte Carlo, Buick Riviera, and many more.

Book excerpt: Julius Myron Alexander was born in the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County, California on October 14, 1857. He worked for the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce and served as the editor of the Healdsburg Enterprise, where he wrote articles, mainly on the history of Healdsburg. Considered the town's historian, he started the city's first archival collection and written history in the 1920's. He also wrote poetry, short stories, and letters. He was affectionately known as "The Poet Laureate of Sonoma County." Once, when confined to a bed in the Healdsburg General Hospital, he jotted down some random thoughts about events that had an influence on his colorful life. He wrote: "Of the three outstanding events of a lifetime--birth, marriage and death--I have the license to write of only one of these. The first one I attended; the second one, for some unexplained reason, I skipped; the third one is still ahead of me, with a good start to catch up pretty soon." In Brochures, Alexander captures the essense of "this every day practical life of ours. They are just plain little word-talks with the intent of good for all."
Book Synopsis Pearls Hogs the Road by : Stephan Pastis
Download or read book Pearls Hogs the Road written by Stephan Pastis and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pearls gang returns with characteristically misanthropic humor (but with more leather): no self-aggrandizing is too flagrant for Rat, no subject is too erudite for Goat, and no sensory input is too basic for Pig. All topics are fair game for Stephan Pastis and his brass-knuckle punch lines. Comic strip censors, apathetic baristas, and IRS employees are all strongly advised to laugh or get out of the way. Pearls Hogs the Road also features three comic strips illustrated by the legendary Bill Watterson of Calvin and Hobbes, who ended a 19-year hiatus from the comics page to collaborate with Pastis.

Download or read book A Road Running Southward written by Dan Chapman and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Engaging hybrid - part lyrical travelogue, part investigative journalism and part jeremiad, all shot through with droll humor." --The Atlanta Journal Constitution In 1867, John Muir set out on foot to explore the botanical wonders of the South, from Kentucky to Florida. One hundred and fifty years later, veteran Atlanta reporter Dan Chapman recreated Muir's journey to see for himself how nature has fared since Muir's time. He uses humor, keen observation, and a deep love of place to celebrate the South's natural riches. But he laments the long-simmering struggles over misused resources and seeks to discover how Southerners might balance surging population growth with protecting the natural beauty Muir found so special. A Road Running Southward is part travelogue, part environmental cri de coeur--a passionate appeal to save one of the loveliest and most biodiverse regions of the world by understanding what we have to lose if we do nothing.
