Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 25, entitled Modern Avenues in Metal-Nucleic Acid Chemistry, of the series Metal Ions in Life Sciences (MILS), provides a timely overview of selected relevant developments in a field which previously had a pronounced focus on fundamental chemistry aspects such as coordination principles, structural chemistry, and consequences for biological processes and disease-related medicinal issues. More recently, also as a consequence of the advent of supramolecular chemistry, advancements in nanochemistry, and new bio-analytical methods, novel aspects of this field have emerged. MILS-25 gives a state-of-the-art account on the present state of research in this field, addressing, among others, porous materials, non-covalent interactions, stimuli-responsive bioconjugates, DNA-templated metal arrays and nanoclusters, genotyping, guanine quadruplexes, and riboswitches. It consists of 15 comprehensive chapters with over 1600 citations, 160 figures (90 of them in color), with key contributions from 40 international experts from Europe, Asia, and America. It is an essential resource for scientists from numerous disciplines, ranging from materials science to biochemistry, by way of classical chemistry and physics. • It offers an update on nucleic acid – metal complex bioconjugates and their applications • It provides an insight into coordination polymers involving nucleic acid components • It covers a wide range of nucleic acids, from DNA duplexes, triplexes and quadruplexes to RNA

Book excerpt: Metaldata: A Bibliography of Heavy Metal Resources is the first book-length bibliography of resources about heavy metal. From its beginnings in the late 1960s and early 1970s, heavy metal has emerged as one of the most consistently popular and commercially successful music styles. Over the decades the style has changed and diversified, drawing attention from fans, critics, and scholars alike. Scholars, journalists, and musicians have generated a body of writing, films, and instructional materials that is substantial in quantity, diverse in approach, and intended for many types of audiences, resulting in a wealth of information about heavy metal. Metaldata provides a current and comprehensive bibliographic resource for researchers and fans of metal. This book also serves as a guide for librarians in their collection development decisions. Chapters focus on performers, musical instruction, discographies, metal subgenres, metal in specific places, and research relating metal to the humanities and sciences, and encompass archives, books, articles, videos, websites, and other resources by scholars, journalists, musicians, and fans of this vibrant musical style.

Book excerpt: A starship crew of humans and dolphins skirts the brink of interstellar war in this epic adventure by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Postman. We are not alone. Humanity’s explorations have revealed galaxies inhabited by millions of intelligent species interacting under ancient traditions. Foremost among said traditions is uplift, which requires all spacefaring races to welcome newcomers into Galactic culture by breeding and genetically guiding each client species to full sapience—but at a price. Patron races demand centuries of indentured servitude from each uplifted client. But is upstart humanity a patron or a client? The Earthship Streaker—crewed by humans and uplifted dolphins and chimpanzees—discovers a derelict armada, perhaps left by the very first patrons, the fabled Progenitors. Suddenly the Five Galaxies teeter on the brink of all-out war as fanatics hunt Streaker for the secret. With a damaged ship and hostile aliens in pursuit, the crew must band together if they hope to survive . . . This ebook features a new introduction by the author. Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards “An extraordinary achievement.” —Poul Anderson, award-winning author of Tau Zero “What a wonderful ride . . . Startide Rising is one of the books that I remember most fondly, out of all I have read, and rereading it thirty years later proved just as enjoyable as the first time. I remain amazed at how many different characters and subplots Brin juggles without a misstep, and the way he keeps the tension and suspense high throughout.” —Tor.com “This is one of the outstanding SF novels of recent years.” —Publishers Weekly “One of maybe twenty science fiction novels that deserve the label classic.” —Time

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy Metal, Gender and Sexuality brings together a collection of original, interdisciplinary, critical essays exploring the negotiated place of gender and sexuality in heavy metal music and its culture. Scholars debate the current state of play concerning masculinities, femininities, queerness, identity aesthetics and monstrosities in an area of music that is sometimes mistakenly treated as exclusively sustaining a masculinist hegemony. The book combines a broad variety of perspectives on the main topic, regarding gender in connection to: the history of the genre; the range of metal subgenres; heavy metal's multidimensional scope (music, lyrics, performance, style, illustrations); men and women; sexualities and various local and global perspectives. Heavy Metal, Gender and Sexuality is a text that opens up the world of heavy metal to reveal that it is a very diverse and ground-breaking stage where gender play is at the centre of its theatricality and sustains its mass appeal.

Book excerpt: The generally accepted definitions of acids and bases together with the generalized definition for the solvent system introduced by the author for the description of both molecular and ionic solvents are discussed. The oxobasicity index introduced as a measure of relative oxoacidic properties of ionic melts (pIL) and methods of its determination are presented. Moreover, the oxoacidity scales of ionic melts based on alkali metal halides at different temperatures are constructed. The sequential addition method (SAM), proposed by the author to investigate the effect of oxide particle size on oxide solubilities is presented. This book is meant for specialists developing theoretical and applied aspects of molten salt chemistry, acid-base theories and solubility phenomena. It will also be useful for those chemists who wish to extend their knowledge of physical and solution chemistry. - First book devoted to oxoacids and oxobases - Aimed at specialists developing theoretical and applied aspects of molten salt chemistry, acid-base theories and solubility phenomena - The perfect handbook for beginners looking for preliminary knowledge about methods of investigation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a certain fascination associated with words. The manipulation of strings of symbols according to mutually accepted rules allows a language to express history as well as to formulate challenges for the future. But language changes as old words are used in a new context and new words are created to describe changing situations. How many words has the computer revolution alone added to languages? "Inorganometallic" is a word you probably have never encountered before. It is one created from old words to express a new presence. A strange sounding word, it is also a term fraught with internal contradiction caused by the accepted meanings of its constituent parts. "In organic" is the name of a discipline of chemistry while "metallic" refers to a set of elements constituting a subsection of that discipline. Why then this Carrollian approach to entitling a set of serious academic papers? Organic, the acknowledged doyenne of chemistry, is distinguished from her brother, inorganic, by the prefix "in," i. e. , he gets everything not organic. Organometallic refers to compounds with carbon-metal bonds. It is simple! Inorganometallic is everything else, i. e. , compounds with noncarbon-metal element bonds. But why a new term? Is not inorganic sufficient? By virtue of training, limited time, resources, co-workers, and so on, chemists tend to work on a specific element class, on a particular compound type, or in a particular phase. Thus, one finds element-oriented chemists (e. g.
