Download or read book CEBAF Superconducting Cavity RF Drive System written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 2060 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAR RF system consists of 418 individual RF amplifier chains. Each superconducting cavity is phase locked to the master drive reference line to within 1 degree, and the cavity field gradient is regulated to within 1 part in 10 by a state-of-the-art RF control module. Precision, continuously adjustable, modulo 360 phase shifters are used to generate the individual phase references, and a compensated RF detector is used for level feedback. The close coupled digital system enhances system accuracy, provides self-calibration, and continuously checks the system for malfunction. Calibration curves, the operating program, and system history are stored in an on board EEPROM. The RF power is generated by a 5Kw, water cooled, permanent magnet focused klystorn. The klystons are clustered in groups of 8 and powered from a common supply. RF power is transmitted to the accelerator sections by semiflexible waveguide.

Book excerpt: The design goal of 2.5*10^-5 rms energy spread for the CEBAF electron beam demands strict control of the phase and amplitude of the 1.5 GHz accelerating field. To achieve such control in the presence of microphonic excitations, a separate system for each of the 338 superconducting cavities is required. The RF control system employs a heterodyne scheme which allows the use of high precision analog circuits operating at 70 MHz. Presently, the 45 MeV CEBAF injector with 18 superconducting cavities is being commissioned, and this effort provides the first full integrated test in the accelerator tunnel, including cryogenics, RF, beam transport, and beam diagnostics. The RF control system design and objectives are discussed and compared to measured performance during the first commissioning phase. Hardware reliability and operational challenges experienced for RF control are presented.
Book Synopsis Determination of Low Level RF Control Requirements for Superconducting Cavities from Microphonics Measurements by :
Download or read book Determination of Low Level RF Control Requirements for Superconducting Cavities from Microphonics Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In lightly beam loaded superconducting accelerators the rf power requirements are dictated by the maximum amount of microphonics that the system must be able to control and by the energy content of the cavity. In previous machines, such as heavy-ion boosters, the energy content of the cavities was relatively small and one could afford to specify a large control window and still use low power ((almost equal to)100 W) rf sources. In newer accelerators that are being contemplated--such as the CEBAF 12 GeV upgrade or RIA--the energy content of the cavity is quite large requiring rf sources in excess of 10 kW. Conservatism in the control window specification would be quite costly; on the other hand loss of lock could have adverse effect on machine availability or beam property or even, in some cases, result in activation. We present a model to estimate the requirements to be placed on the rf control system based on the properties of the cavities, the frequency tuning system, and the characteristics of the accelerator.

Book Synopsis Operation of the RF Controls in the CEBAF Injector by :
Download or read book Operation of the RF Controls in the CEBAF Injector written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAF injector has produced its first relativistic beam with two superconducting cavities. Six RF control modules are used to control amplitude and phase in the chopper cavities, the buncher, the capture section, and the two superconducting cavities. In this paper the required stability and actual performance of the modules are discussed. For the superconducting cavity control, performance is consistent with energy stability of ~ 10^-4.
Book Synopsis New RF Control System for the 12 GeV Energy Upgrade of the CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab by :
Download or read book New RF Control System for the 12 GeV Energy Upgrade of the CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 14002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CEBAF Accelerator at Jefferson Lab presently consists of 50 MeV injector, two anti-parallel superconducting linacs and two arcs for transporting beam between the linacs. By the mid-1990s, the accelerator was providing electrons up to 5.75 GeV. The 12 GeV Upgrade is a major accelerator project aimed at doubling the energy by adding 10 (five per linac) new high gradient cryomodules, each providing 100 MV of field. The new cryomodule will consist of eight 7-cell superconducting cavities operating at an average accelerating gradient of 19.5 MV/m and with an external Q=3.2 x 10^7. The high gradient, very high quality factor and large Lorentz detuning coefficient (KL up to 4) pose significant challenges beyond what the present analog low level RF (LLRF) control systems can handle reliably; therefore, a new digital LLRF control system has been developed. The main highlights of the new RF Control system include: a RF front-end with low temperature drift and good linearity, a large FPGA.
