Book excerpt: Rex Gloriae is an account of the way in which the New Testament representation of Christ in royal categories lived on during the pre-Constantinian period; how it became enriched by its confrontation with Hellenistic culture; and how this development, in the course of the doctrinal disputes of the fourth century, gave rise to the conception of Christ as King that dominated the theology of the Byzantine period and the Middle Ages in the West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Ambrose, a fourth century Bishop of Milan, is a prominent figure of the early Christian Church, initiating ideas that widely impacted medieval conceptions of church and state relations. Serving as a model bishop that viewed the church as rising above the ruins of the Roman Empire, Ambrose is also remembered as the teacher that converted and baptised St. Augustine of Hippo, the great Christian theologian. Ambrose’s literary works, principally sermons, have been acclaimed as masterpieces of Latin eloquence, providing invaluable models of the transmission of Greek philosophy and theology in the West. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. This comprehensive eBook presents Ambrose’s collected works, with illustrations, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Ambrose’s life and works * Features the collected works of Ambrose, in both English translation and the original Latin * Translations by H. de Romestin, E. de Romestin and H. T. F. Duckworth, for ‘Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers’, 1896 * Also features the pseudo Ambrose text, ‘Concerning the Sacraments’ (tr. T. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between earth and heaven examines the teaching of the theology of Christ’s ascension in Anglo-Saxon literature, offering the only comprehensive examination of how patristic ascension theology is transmitted, adapted and taught to Anglo-Saxon audiences. This book argues that Anglo-Saxon authors recognise the Ascension as fundamentally liminal in nature, as concerned with crossing boundaries and inhabiting dual states. In their teaching, authors convert abstract theology into concrete motifs reflecting this liminality, such as the gates of heaven and Christ’s footprints. By examining a range of liminal imagery, Between earth and heaven demonstrates the consistent sophistication and unity of Ascension theology in such diverse sources as Latin and Old English homilies, religious poetry, liturgical practices, and lay popular beliefs and rituals. This study not only refines our evaluation of Anglo-Saxon authors’ knowledge of patristic theology and their process of source adaptation, but also offers a new understanding of the methods of religious instruction and uses of religious texts in Anglo-Saxon England, capturing their lived significance to contemporary audiences.

The harmonic vocabulary has been introduced in a logical order using melodic lines and examples from a wide variety of composers, periods, styles and media. Companion volumes encourage creative discussion of the music examples, more time for sight reading and more time for keyboard harmony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most learned of the Latin Fathers, Saint Jerome had an eventful life, spending time as a hermit, becoming a priest, serving as secretary to Pope Damasus I and later establishing a monastery at Bethlehem. His most ambitious achievement was his Latin translation of the Bible, the Vulgate, based on a Hebrew version, rather than the Septuagint. He believed that mainstream Rabbinical Judaism had rejected the Septuagint as invalid scriptural texts, due to Hellenistic mistranslations. Jerome’s numerous biblical, ascetical, monastic and theological works went on to have a profound influence in the early Middle Ages. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the ancient world, with both English translations and the original Latin texts. Book excerpt: The name of St. Jerome is connected with three versions of the Psalter. Two of these -- generally known as the Roman and the Gallican -- were revisions made by him of the Old Latin Psalter previously in use. In these two revisions St. Jerome had recourse, not to the Hebrew, but to the Greek of the Septuagint. His third version, which was made at the end of the fourth century, was a translation from the Hebrew original. Hence its usual name, the Hebrew Psalter. The more I have studied the Psalter the more I have been convinced that the text translated by St. Jerome at the end of the fourth century was substantially the same as our present Masoretic text. For this reason I have always been inclined to admit a reading which agreed with that text. Also I have learned to view with suspicion any reading which was simply a reproduction of the corresponding word or words of the Gallican version. - Introduction.
