Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) is one of the best-known painters and sculptors of German Expressionism. As co-founder of the artists' group the Brücke at the beginning of the twentieth century, he is also one of the most important artists of the avant-garde. His life and work were deeply shaped by his search for the 'exotic' and 'primordial', for foreign lands and cultures. What resulted were brilliantly colourful, imaginative artworks in which he create foreign worlds. This book traces the stages of Kirchner's life and artistic development. It illustrates how, by synthesising a great variety of influences from non-European cultures, the artists achieved an intermingling of art, life and work that manifested itself as 'exotic' Gesamtkunstwerk not only in his work but also in his live-in studios.

Book excerpt: Rainer Fetting became known together with a circle of artist colleagues who founded the artists gallery am Moritzplatz in 1977 and which soon became known as the Moritz boys. Fetting became their star. With his swift, radiant style of painting he was counted among the group of Jungen Wilden who caused a stir in Germany and around the world. In the early nineteen eighties, his paintings were shown at such important exhibitions as A New Spirit in Painting in the London Royal Academy in London, or Zeitgeist in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin. Fetting moved to New York in 1983. He produced his first material pictures, sculptures and photographs there in which he continued to make use of urban motifs and male nudes. He returned to Berlin after the fall of the Wall. In 1996, he designed a 3.7 metre tall statue of Willy Brandt for the headquarters of the Social Democratic Party in Berlin, which caused a sensation, as well as a bust of Helmut Schmidt ten years later. This is the first comprehensive monograph on Fetting's work. English and German text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-known art historians from Europe and the Americas discuss the influence of conceptualism on art since the 1970s. Art After Conceptual Art tracks the various legacies of conceptualist practice over the past three decades. This collection of essays by art historians from Europe and the Americas introduces and develops the idea that conceptual art generated several different, and even contradictory, forms of art practice. Some of these contested commonplace assumptions of what art is; others served to buttress those assumptions. The bulk of the volume features newly written and highly innovative essays challenging standard interpretations of the legacy of conceptualism and discussing the influence of conceptualism's varied practices on art since the 1970s. The essays explore topics as diverse as the interrelationships between conceptualism and institutional critique, neoexpressionist painting and conceptualist paradigms, conceptual art's often-ignored complicity with design and commodity culture, the specific forms of identity politics taken up by the reception of conceptual art, and conceptualism's North/South and East/West dynamics. A few texts that continue to be crucial for critical debates within the fields of conceptual and postconceptual art practice, history, and theory have been reprinted in order to convey the vibrant and ongoing discussion on the status of art after conceptual art. Taken together, the essays will inspire an exploration of the relationship between postconceptualist practices and the beginnings of contemporary art. Distributed for the Generali Foundation, Vienna.

Book excerpt: “Dan Hinkley is a rare man, generous, inspired, and gifted with an eye for beauty that is given to few people. How I long to wander again in the galloping beauty of his garden at Windcliff. Here it is, in all its inspiring wonder.” —Anna Pavord, author of Landskipping and The Curious Gardener Daniel Hinkley is widely recognized as one of the foremost modern plant explorers and one of the world’s leading plant collectors. He has created two outstanding private gardens—Heronswood and Windcliff. Both gardens, and the story of how one begat the other, are beautifully celebrated in Hinkley’s new book, Windcliff. In these pages you will delight in Hinkley’s recounting of the creation of his garden, the stories of the plants that fill its space, and in his sage gardening advice. Hinkley’s spirited ruminations on the audacity and importance of garden-making—contemplations on the beauty of a sunflower turning its neck from dawn to dusk, the way a plant’s scent can spur a memory, and much more—will appeal to the hearts of every gardener. Filled with Claire Takacs’s otherworldly photography, Windcliff is spectacular for both its physical beauty and the quality of information it contains.
