Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the current trends in regional economic development in Europe, Restructuring Industry and Territory explores ways in which the restructuring of industry and territorial development relate to each other, their emergent interdependency and role in economic development. The book argues that the structural and cultural features of regions play an important part in helping or hindering concerted policies for regional development. Using case studies from different industries in a variety of regions, the contributors show that the pressures for restructuring, such as internationalisation or even 'globalisation', have been mediated by formerly nationally rooted industries in Europe becoming increasingly integrated, due to the ongoing processes of technological and organisational innovation, and political regulation.

Book excerpt: Why does a company find that it needs to close a factory? And how does it decide exactly which of its factories to close? Such decisions have a major impact on regional economies. For much of the post-war period multi-plant companies enjoyed unprecedented expansion, but for more than a decade now they have been involved in major restructuring, leading to the closure of factories and to redundancy for thousands of workers. As a result, some localities have been plunged into recession from which they have not recovered. This book places branch closures within the context of wider debates about the nature of industrial change in the last part of the century, including the impact of new technology and working practices, the internationalisation of production and deindustrialisation. It also considers appropriate policies for assisting the economic development of lagging regions, including the role of possible new branch factories and the sorts of initiatives needed to retain and up-grade the jobs in existing branches.

At that time many formerly prosperous regions were becoming impoverished and many former "core" areas were being demoted to peripheral status. This book considers this crisis, its nature and manifestations and its implications. It looks in particular at how the regional crisis affects the socialist analysis of capitalism and it analyses how the crisis affects the political outlook and political actions of the working class in afflicted regions. The theories and analysis put forward apply throughout the world in both advanced and less developed countries.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While restructuring is increasingly acknowledged as an inherent characteristic of economic development and receives substantial policy attention at European and Member State level, the regional perspective on it is rarely discussed. However, most large-scale restructurings affect the regions and employment areas where they take place, not just the company and its employees. Based on secondary data analysis, a literature review and five in-depth case studies, this research project aims to identify the effects of large-scale restructuring at regional level. It also describes examples of successful regional management directed at maintaining and improving labour markets and living conditions following an important restructuring event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Throughout Western Europe and the former Soviet bloc, the structural shift from traditional heavy industry towards lighter manufacturing and services has often had a strong regional dimension. This volume brings together researchers and practitioners from Scotland and Poland to share such restructuring experiences. The Poles, now closer than ever to EU membership, are eager to draw on Western experience while Western experts and institutions have an opportunity to contribute to shaping regional policy in Central Europe. The book is divided into four sections: the first examines economic transformation and restructuring; the second focuses on social partnerships and their role in regional development; the third looks at enterprise-supporting initiatives; the final section questions the role of FDI. Its Scottish-Polish focus provides a fresh perspective on policy for regional and local development, summarising recent developments in both countries and stressing the importance of building appropriate institutional capacity to promote strong local economies.

Book excerpt: Offers a look at world inequality by comparing the development problems and prospects of southern Mexico and the US South in the context of global restructuring and NAFTA. Both regions have a history and legacy as labour-repressive producers of primary commodities. However, the US South today encompasses poles of considerable wealth and poverty, while the Mexican South remains mired in the world periphery. Ranging from the Mexico-US apparel connection and the restructuring of Mexico's coffee farming to agribusiness and immigration in Florida, the contributors trace the past and future of these two Souths.
