Book excerpt: A close conceptual analysis of Herman Bavinck’s (1854-1921) four-volume Reformed Dogmatics, this book explores a long-neglected feature of his “organic” relationship between nature and grace, arguing that the motif is intelligible only in a uniquely Reformed covenant theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revival of Calvinism in the nineteenth-century Netherlands entailed the neo-Calvinist movement. With Abraham Kuyper, Herman Bavinck became a brand name of neo-Calvinism. Nonetheless, not until the first decade of the twenty-first century was scholarly interest in Bavinck's work increasing. The conventional "two Bavincks" model used to read his work for much of the twentieth century argues that some contradictory and irreconcilable themes do exist in Bavinck's system, which makes Bavinck a self-contradictory thinker. This dualistic reading characterised most of Bavinck scholars in the second half of the twentieth century. Since James Eglinton's new reading of Bavinck's organic motif, the conventional model became untenable, and scholars are seeking for a reunited Herman Bavinck. Bavinck as a holistic theologian has become the industry standard of Bavinck studies. Ximian Xu aims on the one hand to maintain "one Bavinck", on the other hand, and more importantly, to fill in a notable gap in Bavinck scholarship – that is, no single work hitherto has focused on Bavinck's idea of theology as the wetenschap (science) of God. This study demonstrates that the idea of scientific (wetenschappelijke) theology furnishes the meta-paradigm and cardinal model that incorporates the fundamental characteristics and themes of Bavinck's dogmatic system. Moreover, it argues that Bavinck's scientific theology makes an attempt to engage with the other sciences. Given this, Bavinck's scientific theology is relevant today. That is, Bavinck's theological insights can be deployed to advance theology's engagement with the other sciences in contemporary secular universities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nathaniel Gray Sutanto offers a fresh reading of Herman Bavinck's theological epistemology, and argues that his Trinitarian and organic worldview utilizes an extensive range of sources. Sutanto unfolds Bavinck's understanding of what he considered to be the two most important aspects of epistemology: the character of the sciences and the correspondence between subjects and objects. Writing at the heels of the European debates in the 19th and 20th century concerning theology's place in the academy, and rooted in historic Christian teachings, Sutanto demonstrates how Bavinck's argument remains fresh and provocative. This volume explores archival material and peripheral works translated for the first time in English. The author re-reads several key concepts, ranging from Organicism to the Absolute, and relates Bavinck's work to Thomas Aquinas, Eduard von Hartmann, and other thinkers. Sutanto applies this reading to current debates on the relationship between theology and philosophy, nature and grace, and the nature of knowing; and in doing so provides students and scholars with fresh methods of considering Orthodox and modern forms of thought, and their connection with each other.

Walker III shows readers how to break free of demonic attack for good by teaching them how to do the following: Identify the demonic activity beneath their emotional, social, and spiritual turmoil Understand the authority they have to cast out demons Find the courage to confront the issue instead of trying to camouflage it Charismatics tend to deal with life issues only from a spiritual perspective. Am I ready to inherit my destiny from god to go out and minister to others?

Book excerpt: Do we understand how our food choices, thoughts, and emotions directly affect our physical health? Who controls our personal health and well-being? Our doctors? Our healthcare system? Our Lord? Or ourselves? As a Christian acupuncturist in private practice, yet fully integrated into the healthcare networks of Los Angeles, Jamie Chan-Ortega is able to offer natural healthcare and spiritual counsel within a system that all too often focuses just on the body in parts and grossly overlooks how a chronically stressed and negative mind, burdened heart, or broken spirit can aggravate if not directly cause a multitude of physical ailments and disease. Do you crave: —the wholeness of health —the fullness of joy —gifts from God, freely given We must pursue them! Can we follow God and take heed to science at the same time? Yes, we can. We can strike that balance between being responsibly in control of our health yet surrendered to God. With tremendous insight, great intelligence, and a readily-felt tenderness, Jamie encouragingly shows us how to apply scientific facts and spiritual principles into our everyday lives so that we can truly experience the fullness of life God intends for each and every one of us.
