However, even with increased emphasis on basic education for all, many individuals fail to achieve basic skills to succeed in life. The book presents evidence that one core reason is that by the time a child is old enough to attend school, there is already a wide disparity in cognitive skills and in emotional and behavioral development among children from households of different socioeconomic backgrounds. Low levels of cognitive development in early childhood strongly correlate with low socio-economic status (as measured by wealth and parental education) as well as malnutrition. These disadvantages are often exacerbated by economic crises. Fortunately, however, as documented in this volume, there are programs that have proven effective in promoting a child's development through caregiver-child interaction and stimulation, and with well designed preschool programs. While preschool programs currently cover a modest share of low income children, expansion of such services to at risk populations is a cost-effective means of improving overall educational achievement. Thus, focused preschool programs can serve as a key investment in a strategy to reduce the transmission of poverty from poor parents to their children."

General educators have traditionally utilized the language of curriculum (e.g., standards, pacing guides, formative and summative assessments) to talk about student goals and achievement. Special educators, including SLPs, most often utilize the language of development (e.g., norms, percentile ranks, development milestones) to measure student growth. The Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in RtI assesses this apparent clash in nomenclature and identifies new ways for collaboration and cooperation among faculty and administration. In order for the SLP to be an effective partner in the development and implementation of RtI, the author proposes that SLPs should: understand the "language" of general education,be able to "translate" the curricular needs of students into skill-based units that can be measured and progress-monitored,have full understanding of the developmental progression of skills and how that progression links to curriculum standards, andbe knowledgeable on evidence-based practices that can have a meaningful impact on closing developmental gaps and result in higher achievement outcomes. This text provides the blueprint for the implementation of a system of student support that was envisioned in the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA). Unlike other books on RtI, this essential resource addresses the very specific roles that different school-level professionals must play to make the system effective. Book excerpt: Consumer genomics, encompassing both direct-to-consumer applications (i.e., genetic testing that is accessed by a consumer directly from a commercial company apart from a health care provider) and consumer-driven genetic testing (i.e., genetic testing ordered by a health care provider in response to an informed patient request), has evolved considerably over the past decade, moving from more personal utility-focused applications outside of traditional health care to interfacing with clinical care in nontraditional ways. As consumer genomics has increasingly intersected with clinical applications, discussions have arisen around the need to demonstrate clinical and analytical validity and clinical utility due to the potential for misinterpretation by consumers. Clinical readiness and interest for this information have presented educational and training challenges for providers. At the same time, consumer genomics has emerged as a potentially innovative mechanism for thinking about health literacy and engaging participants in their health and health care. To explore the current landscape of consumer genomics and the implications for how genetic test information is used or may be used in research and clinical care, the Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public workshop on October 29, 2019, in Washington, DC. Discussions included such topics as the diversity of participant populations, the impact of consumer genomics on health literacy and engagement, knowledge gaps related to the use of consumer genomics in clinical care, and regulatory and health policy issues such as data privacy and security. A broad array of stakeholders took part in the workshop, including genomics and consumer genomics experts, epidemiologists, health disparities researchers, clinicians, users of consumer genomics research applications, representatives from patient advocacy groups, payers, bioethicists, regulators, and policy makers. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.
