Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repositioning Organization Theory studies the political positioning of organization theory. The book argues that there are two main projects in organization theory: the hegemonic project of positioning and postmodern project of depositioning. To critique the theoretical and political limits of these two projects, Böhm employs a range of critical and post-structural philosophies. Having conceptualized the need for a 'political event', the book is a passionate call for repositioning and repoliticizing organization theory. This book discusses the impossibilities of, and strategies for, such a project.

Book excerpt: Organization Theory: Tension and Changeprovides the most current and concise analysis of the development and evolution of organizational theories, forms, and practices, from the rise of the factory system to the emergence of the virtual global organization. Using a wide variety of examples and applications from private- and public-sector organizations, the text emphasizes the tensions, contradictions, and paradoxes inherent in all organizational arrangements. In addition to the classic themes such as scientific management, human relations, rational bureaucratic models, and environmental models, the book explores emerging organizational forms based on lean and flexible production, post-bureaucracy, alliancess, and networks, virtual organization and information technologies, corporate cultures, learning organizations, transnational commodity chains, and post-modernism.

The authors survey a broad range of theories and analytical approaches—from public institutional theory to theories of governance—and consider which are the most promising, influential, and important for the field. This book paints a full picture of how these theories contribute to, and explain, what we know about public administration today. The third edition is fully revised and updated to reflect the latest developments and research in the field including more coverage of governments and governance, feminist theory, emotional labor theory, and grounded research methodology. Expanded chapter conclusions and a brand-new online supplement with sample comprehensive exam questions and summary tables make this an even more valuable resource for all public administration students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `The Sage Handbook of Organizational Behaviour is a fine addition to past works of reference in the field, edited by two prominent scholars who are internationally known. Its approach is both critical and original in many incisive ways, aspiring to a cutting-edge coverage of the core and periphery of OB. Many of the chapter authors stick their necks out and avoid the more obvious, conventional expositions of their topic. It covers a wide range of topics of potential use to both undergraduate and postgraduate students of the subject, as well as academics, researchers and practitioners. It will be of particular interest to those on MBA and DBA courses. It can be strongly recommended as an essential faculty library purchase, as well as a useful tool for individuals interested in having such a guide to the subject at hand′ - Professor Malcolm Warner, Emeritus Fellow, Wolfson College and Judge Business School, University of Cambridge `This important new Handbook brings together for the first time a collection of major contributions on macro-organizational behaviour. This area of study is concerned with the ways in which the people who inhabit organizations make sense of their situations, contributing to the distinctive character of those organizations through their actions and struggles. The conventional literature, artificially divided between micro organizational behaviour and organization theory, has under-explored this obvious conjunction between people and organizations. Stewart Clegg and Cary Cooper perform a great service in helping to make good the deficiency′ - John Child, Professor of Commerce, Birmingham Business School `Thorough and comprehensive. Thoughtful critique and new insights′ - Chris Argyris, James B. Conant Professor, Emeritus, Harvard University In this second volume of The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior, the focus is on macro-organizational behavior, revealing ways in which the person and group affect the organization. Chapters are written by eminent and upcoming scholars in the field, each presenting on the major issues in organizational behavior as seen with a macro-lens. The Handbook is divided into three parts, the first introducing and framing the field; the second part considering the various organizational processes involved, including learning, teamwork, identity and power, among others, while finally Part Three introduces organizing on a macro-scale, covering topics such as organizational change, design governance and globalization. The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Behavior: Macro Approaches is an essential resource for researchers and students across management and organization studies.

Book Synopsis For Formal Organization by : Paul Du Gay

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the state of Organization Theory, its purpose, object, and practical relevance. In recent years, disquiet has mounted within the field of organizational analysis, broadly defined, about the overly theoretical and a-or anti-organizational state of Organization Theory and its consequent lack of practical purchase, not least in the light of pressing economic, social and political concerns that are often profoundly organizational in nature. The book argues that predominant contemporary modes of theorising within the field, and in particular the stance associated with them, have had the effect of occluding and dissolving Organization Theory's core object - formal organization - and, as a consequence, dissipating its practical focus and reach. The book seeks to contribute to the goal of reviving Organization Theory as a practical science of organizing and rehabilitating its core object -formal organization - through a re-examination and re-assessment of the outlook, comportment and attitude - stance - animating its classical antecedents. This ambition is double edged. For not only does it seek to revive Organization Theory through reconnecting it with the practical orientation framing classical organizational analysis, it also seeks to indicate how the historic products of that orientation or stance still have considerable traction for analysing and intervening in contemporary matters of organizational concern. Not least, this 'classical organizational stance' provides those who adopt it with a method with which to orient themselves both in formal organizational thought and in formal organizational life. It furnishes them with an ethos combining both practical rationality and ethical seriousness. In this sense the book suggest itself both as a guide to doing Organizational analysis and doing practical organization
