Book Synopsis A Thousand Graduates by : Ian Howie-Willis

Book excerpt: University institutions have been a recent innovation in Papua New guinea, a late product of that country's protracted development towards nationhood. Charged with rapidly augmenting an embryonic national bureaucratic-technical elite, they have been eminently successful in fulfilling their brief: since their foundation in the middle and late 1960s they have undertaken ambitious programmes of teaching and research, and have maintained the flow of graduates which helped make Independence possible in 1975. There have been costs, however. The proper role of universities in Papua New Guinea has long been a topic for lively - and sometimes disruptive - contention. The universities are autonomous bodies at the apex of a pyramid of government controlled institutions of tertiary education, the very complexity of which has ensured the persistence of numerous tensions. There have been many individuals and groups with interests in the system to defend, and ambitions to promote. At the same time the universities have been so central to the government's task of nation building that in trying to maximize its investment in them it has habitually sought to bring them, against their will, more closely under its control. Relations within and between the universities, and between them and the government, have consequently often been uneasy, especially in the period following Independence as the country trod an uncertain path into nationhood.

Book Synopsis Defending Israel by : Alan M. Dershowitz
Download or read book Defending Israel written by Alan M. Dershowitz and published by All Points Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned lawyer Alan Dershowitz recounts stories from his many years of defending the state of Israel. Alan Dershowitz has spent years advocating for his "most challenging client"—the state of Israel—both publicly and in private meetings with high level international figures, including every US president and Israeli leader of the past 40 years. Replete with personal insights and unreported details, Defending Israel offers a comprehensive history of modern Israel from the perspective of one of the country's most important supporters. Readers are given a rare front row seat to the high profile controversies and debates that Dershowitz was involved in over the years, even as the political tides shifted and the liberal community became increasingly critical of Israeli policies. Beyond documenting America's changing attitude toward the country, Defending Israel serves as an updated defense of the Jewish homeland on numerous points—though it also includes Dershowitz's criticisms of Israeli decisions and policies that he believes to be unwise. At a time when Jewish Americans as a whole are increasingly uncertain as to who supports Israel and who doesn't, there is no better book to turn to for answers—and a pragmatic look toward the future.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.
