La presente tesis tiene como objeto de estudio el tratamiento informativo que se realiza de estas tres herramientas para poder conocer su repercusión e influencia como fuentes de información, y su uso como instrumentos para establecer relaciones a nivel internacional por parte de la UE. Para ello, se estudia a través del análisis de contenido, piezas periodísticas de cinco medios europeos de alta cobertura mediática en su edición digital (El País, El Mundo, Le Monde, The Daily Telegraph y Bild), durante la octava legislatura del Parlamento Europeo comprendida entre 2014 y 2019.En última instancia, este estudio pretende, contextualizar la materia de estudio y establecer un marco teórico para futuras investigaciones, además de comprobar el uso y influencia que tienen la comunicación, diplomacia y protocolo de la UE en la sociedad.

A lo largo de los últimos años, la Unión Europea ha experimentado un creciente escepticismo. Aunque algunos argumentan que la crisis financiera es una de las principales razones del incremento del escepticismo, el papel jugado por los medios de comunicación en el proceso de comunicación de la Unión Europea también podría haber jugado un factor importante al respecto. El principal objetivo de esta tesis doctoral es analizar el papel que los medios de comunicación de prensa escrita juegan como "gatekeepers" en el proceso de comunicación europeo y como construyen la imagen de la Unión Europea para ver qué puede hacerse para mejorar la comunicación con los ciudadanos europeos. Para hacer esto un marco teórico analizará a través del análisis documental los principales autores que han estudiado el rol de los medios de comunicación y las teorías de "gatekeeping" a través de los años mediante el análisis de los principales conceptos en este área. Teniendo en cuenta los resultados generales del marco teórico, un estudio del caso utilizará el método del análisis de contenido comparado para hacer una investigación más amplia basada en cuatro partes: una primera parte que se centrará en las principales características de los periódicos europeos analizados, una segunda parte donde una prueba general comparará las noticias publicadas en la web Europa Newsroom con las noticias publicadas en los periódicos europeos desde el mes de noviembre de 2014 hasta finales del mes de febrero de 2015, una tercera parte que llevará a cabo la misma comparación que esta segunda, pero solo teniendo en cuenta aquellos temas que hayan tenido un seguimiento total a nivel europeo por parte de los periódicos europeos y una cuarta parte que llevará a cabo un análisis general de cada periódico teniendo en cuenta todos los datos obtenidos por los tres análisis previos. Con los principales datos del caso de estudio se llevará a cabo un análisis profundo con expertos y líderes de opinión a nivel europeo para obtener un enfoque sólido por parte de una importante muestra compuesta por 16 expertos provenientes de instituciones europeas y el sector privado a nivel europeo. Todo este análisis nos servirá para ver cómo a pesar de que los periódicos están jugando un papel importante como "gatekeepers" y modificando el mensaje de la Unión Europea, las instituciones han sido capaces de enviar los mensajes más importantes a sus ciudadanos a través de tanto los canales clásicos como los nuevos canales de comunicación. Sin embargo, es importante destacar que si las instituciones impulsan la actual política de comunicación y son más interactivas, el impacto de las noticias europeas puede ser incluso mucho mayor, especialmente si consiguen explicar "de un modo fácil lo que es complicado". La investigación muestra alguna de las áreas donde esta mejora podría ayudar a la Unión Europea a mejorar el envío de su mensaje.

Son muchos los ámbitos sociales que infravaloran el protocolo como el valioso instrumento de comunicación del que se trata, incluidos los medios de comunicación cuya imagen que ofrecen del mismo no parece serla correcta, lo que a su vez puede influir de manera negativa en la percepción que la sociedad tiene del protocolo. Éste es el problema de fondo que proponemos comprobar científicamente en la presente tesis doctoral, cuyo estudio lo llevaremos a cabo a través de una comparativa con la disciplina más afín que existe: la diplomacia. Para ello contextualizaremos la materia y centraremos el marco teórico en el protocolo diplomático, donde ambas se entrecruzan constantemente por pura lógica y necesidad. Con el objetivo de profundizar más en el estudio de la representación que hace la prensa del protocolo y una vez obtenidos los datos objetivos del tratamiento informativo que hace la prensa con respecto a la diplomacia, procederemos a un análisis del propio discurso del protocolo en este medio, donde analizaremos más detenidamente cómo es la representación mediática del protocolo en la prensa española y si corresponde con su verdadera razón de ser. Tras haber realizado el oportuno repaso por las teorías más representativas sobre la influencia de los medios de comunicación en la sociedad y conseguidos los resultados de ambos análisis que componen la presente investigación, comprobaremos cómo es el tratamiento informativo que la prensa hace del protocolo y verificaremos la posible influencia que esta representación mediática puede llegar a tener en nuestra sociedad.
