Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Remorse: A Tragedy It was evident in fact, that the latter process must be far more delightful to the mind than the former; as in the one case, how ever we may instructed and improved, we are still conscious of our inferiority; we. Stand as pupils before our master, and advance not a single step beyond the limit which he marks for us. But in the other, it is our master, indeed, who presents us with the key of Paradise, but we ourselves Open the gate, all our wanderings are unconstrained, and we find beauties, and trace likenesses With all the delight of original composition. It is true, that a closer ana lysis' would shew that inthis apparent freedom we are in fact fol? Lowing a prescribed direction -but the restraint which is neither seen nor felt is in fact no restraint. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But write as I may, of purpose or purposeless, why print? Why, perforce, appear to a great public, unknown, unannounced, and without calling? Grim necessity speeds the arrow that quavers on the string of inclination. And so I print - offer my thoughts in all their crudity - without the pruning hook of criticism - without the blotting track of revision; bad reasoning and, mayhap, useless trouble, but, so I print. And thou dreaded, generous, lenient public, you have my lines. If not wanted, return them, or, perchance, you discover some merit, and point it out, you will have my thanks. And again, if you subtract their faults, and count them up, still you have my thanks. I slipped my thoughts as they came; and as naught is remembered save that which is worthy of remembrance, and naught is worthy of remembrance save that which will benefit by remembering, I shall regret it if they are to be read to-day and forgotten to-morrow. If, however, there be one shall live until the day after, I am satisfied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tender and True: Poems of Love This little volume is intended to contain love-poems of a pure and elevated character, and those alone. Poems of jealousy, remorse, and hopeless longing and regret are omitted, and this rule excludes a very large number of well-known and sometimes very fine poems. I have not left out such as treat of the sorrow of absence and similar trials; but I have wished to make the book, as a whole, inspire cheerfulness and hope, and not sadness. It contains sonnets of Shakespeare and Mrs. Browning, songs of Lovelace and Burns, and poetry by Tennyson, Coventry Patmore, and many other less-known singers. Some specimens are given of the ingenious and melodious versification of the younger English poets, such as Payne and Munby. It gives me pleasure to express my thanks to the authors who have kindly permitted me to make use of their poems for this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Youth of Beauty: And Other Poems One of the most hopeful signs for the future is the appearance of a band of young poets in the land, anxious to turn away the reproach that the poetry which has been so long a proud national heritage is ours no longer; and among these young poets who, to a considerable native gift, have added a high seriousness and devotion to their art, Mr. Roberts occupies an honoured position, for he has justified the hopes aroused by his earliest work, and has now stepped beyond the dangers and fears that assail the path of the youthful poet. He has been wise and courageous in that he has avoided sensation and violence in an age when the unusual is acclaimed by a body of men who find no virtue in precedent, and worship the extravagant and bizarre. He has been content to tread the old paths, learning his art, and acquiring a technique which has qualified him for longer and more adventurous flights. 'A master of metre, ' as 'The Times' said, he has written narrative, lyrical and dramatic verse with success, and though it is early to predict in which field the poet will finally work, this versatility augurs well for the future. There is in Mr. Roberts' poetry a gentle spirit, somewhat brooding, and occasionally pessimistic, but he escapes the traditional fault of young poets by the light that emanates from his philosophy, and reveals a glory shining through the gloom of despair. To quote one lyric, we feel that - 'Art, with its deeper sight, has seen Something to which the world is blind.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Garden, and Other Poems John Gregory was born on the 14th of June, 1831, at Bideford, in Devon. His father was a merchant's clerk, and a man of considerable natural ability and thought, and of a deeply religious turn of mind. For fifty years he was a local preacher in connection with the Wesleyan Methodists, and a tablet to his memory was erected in the chapel where he usually officiated. His mother was the daughter of a Hartland peasant. The boy had but little schooling. At the age of eleven he was apprenticed to a shoemaker for the term of seven years, and whilst serving his time became acquainted with Edward Capern, a postman, who subsequently made a considerable reputation as a poet. Young Gregory now began to pave his way, and, with a brave heart, set out in pursuit of knowledge. After his hours of weary work he devoted what leisure he had to study, but he regarded all books as footnotes to the book of Nature. His apprenticeship served, Gregory came to Bristol, but in a few months lack of work drove him home again, where he continued to reside until 1852. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one!
