Book excerpt: Originally, remission was my very first poetry book. It was self-published in 1998 as a thin, twenty-four page chapbook. It was (and still) is a general collection; it has no consistent theme which unites the overall work. One might effectively argue that the theme of the book is pain and/or the removal of pain. The title clearly suggests this, as does the inclusion of the dictionary definition of the word remission. Yet, a vital part of my attraction to the word remission is its inherent flexibility. The word carries a multitude of ideas. It's fair to say that the theme of this, particular collection is all over the place. It's simultaneously happy and angry, sad and joyful. It is esoteric/plain-spoken, bizarre/ordinary, sexual/restrained, exploratory/cautious and phobic/fearless. It's probably all of the adjectives usually reserved for the Adams Family. It is what it is. I dedicate this book to sincere lovers of poetry, everywhere. This collection is for you who, when reading a well-written poem, actually recognize it as being such. It's for you who understand how vastly different good work is from those endless piles of refuse that sadly get mistaken as poetry, every day. This book is for those of you who can pull several (equally interesting) interpretations out of even a short piece of poetry, whereas the average person sees not even one. remission is for the ones who get goosebumps from reading or hearing a good poem, who are moved to tears by one or become enraged at an injustice which a poem refers to. This is for you who get truly lost inside the art. These pieces are also for anyone who is in need of healing. Whether the nature of that healing is physical, emotional, mental or spiritual, it matters not. May it wash over you as a river of healing waters. It is, as well, for anyone who has the gifts of healing, whether for people, for animals, for systems or the planet or any of its ecosystems. May this in some fashion spark your gift and your drive to use it for the betterment of all. Whether you heal with tools or techniques, with medicines or herbs or perhaps you heal with humor. Whatever it is, please use your gift. This is book is for the living.

Paine's ideas reflected Enlightenment-era rhetoric of transnational human rights.

Book excerpt: He's my mentor and off-limits. So why can't I stay away from him? As Dr. Carolina Ramirez's career is taking off, she gets incredible news. Dr. Hector Medina, the doctor she idolized as a teenager and whose research she used to design her cutting-edge clinical trial, is joining her team. As her boss. But they say you should never meet your heroes, and Carolina is about to get far more than she bargained for. She knows a liaison with her boss is a bad idea. But in addition to the intellectual spark they share, there's an undeniable physical connection between them she can't seem to ignore. Then it all goes wrong and instead of explaining himself, he skips town, nearly destroying her-and her career-in his wake. Seven years later, he's back and opening up old wounds she'd thought long healed. She's recovered her career, her reputation, and her confidence despite his devastating betrayal. She should hate him. Instead, she finds herself drawn to him once again. Why can't she get him out of her head? And why does her body still react to him after so many years apart?

Book excerpt: “To write a series of poems out of extreme illness is a bracing accomplishment indeed. In Deluge... Leila Chatti, born of a Catholic mother and a Muslim father, brilliantly explores the trauma." —Naomi Shihab Nye, The New York Times In her early twenties, Leila Chatti started bleeding and did not stop. Physicians referred to this bleeding as flooding. In the Qur’an, as in the Bible, the Flood was sent as punishment. The idea of disease as punishment drives this collection’s themes of shame, illness, grief, and gender, transmuting religious narratives through the lens of a young Arab-American woman suffering a taboo female affliction. Deluge investigates the childhood roots of faith and desire alongside their present day enactments. Chatti’s remarkably direct voice makes use of innovative poetic form to gaze unflinchingly at what she was taught to keep hidden. This powerful piece of life-writing depicts Chatti’s journey from diagnosis to surgery and remission in meticulous chronology that binds body to spirit and advocates for the salvation of both. Chatti blends personal narrative, religious imagery, and medical terminology in a chronicle of illness, womanhood, and faith.

Book excerpt: When it comes to disease, who beats the odds — and why? When it comes to spontaneous healing, skepticism abounds. Doctors are taught that “miraculous” recoveries are flukes, and as a result they don’t study those cases or take them into account when treating patients. Enter Dr. Jeff Rediger, who has spent over 15 years studying spontaneous healing, pioneering the use of scientific tools to investigate recoveries from incurable illnesses. Dr. Rediger’s research has taken him from America’s top hospitals to healing centers around the world—and along the way he’s uncovered insights into why some people beat the odds. In Cured, Dr. Rediger digs down to the root causes of illness, showing how to create an environment that sets the stage for healing. He reveals the patterns behind healing and lays out the physical and mental principles associated with recovery: first, we need to physically heal our diet and our immune systems. Next, we need to mentally heal our stress response and our identities. Through rigorous research, Dr. Rediger shows that much of our physical reality is created in our minds. Our perception changes our experience, even to the point of changing our physical bodies—and thus the healing of our identity may be our greatest tool to recovery. Ultimately, miracles only contradict what we know of nature at this point in time. Cured leads the way in explaining the science behind these miracles, and provides a first-of-its-kind guidebook to both healing and preventing disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important addition to the literature of cancer by an award-winning scholar and memoirist. Elaborating upon her “Living with Cancer” column in the New York Times, Susan Gubar helps patients, caregivers, and the specialists who seek to serve them. In a book both enlightening and practical, she describes how the activities of reading and writing can right some of cancer’s wrongs. To stimulate the writing process, she proposes specific exercises, prompts, and models. In discussions of the diary of Fanny Burney, the stories of Leo Tolstoy and Alice Munro, numerous memoirs, novels, paintings, photographs, and blogs, Gubar shows how readers can learn from art that deepens our comprehension of what it means to live or die with the disease. From a writer whose own memoir, Memoir of a Debulked Woman: Enduring Ovarian Cancer, was described by the New York Times Book Review as “moving and instructive…and incredibly brave,” this volume opens a path to healing.
