Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Early Life and Development of Minnesota When I told him that I would like a position to teach mathe maties, it struck him more than favorably, as he said that that was his line of work, and that it did not give him any time to run the university and he wanted some one to handle the classes. We went around with his horse and buggy among the members Of the Board, and I found that the general scare which everywhere existed made them hesitate about making any arrangements for the future running of the school, not knowing whether or not it would ever open again. The presi dent, whose name I have forgotten, said that when school would open again, which he hoped would be in the fall, he felt quite certain that I would be offered a position as assistant teacher in mathematics. A majority of the board were really in favor of engaging me, and the other members were not op posed, excepting only their apprehension as to future pros peets of the university in such calamitous times. This came to pass in the fall, when I was on the government surveys in the northern part of Minnesota and could not accept. If this open ing had occurred or had been decided upon before I came to this state, it would without doubt have changed the course of my whole life. Book excerpt: Harlan Page Hall (1838-1907) founded the St. Paul Dispatch in 1868 and devoted most of his life to journalism. This book, based on personal reminiscences, chronicles the contests and struggles of Minnesota's political parties from its territorial years through the early twentieth century. He emphasizes the parties' factional struggles but also connects politics within the state to national campaigns, candidates, and issues. Hall describes local politics in light of the region's conflicting economic interests and devotes considerable attention to political strategy at the grassroots level.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Minnesota Became a State At this juncture, the head of the breezy Mr. Thompson of Kentucky appeared above the troubled surface long enough to pay his respects to the arguments advanced by some of his opponents. By way of introduction, he complimented the ability of Mr. Seward and professed admiration for that power which enabled him, while representing New York, to carry New England in one pocket and Ohio in the other. He wittily described the contest which he said would take place between the Republicans and Democrats for the foreign vote in the various States, and interpreted their zeal in behalf of alien suffrage as a sop to the foreign vote. There was doubtless some truth in this latter assertion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota The presence of faribault being required at his trading post on the Cannon river, he departed in company with two young Indians, leaving me alone with the two hired men. I made it a practice to hunt with the Indians every day, except on Sunday, when I remained in my lodge. The Dakota mode of hunting deer is to form an extended line with intervals of eighty or a hundred yards between the hunters, and then ad vance at a rapid pace, completely scouring the country on their way. Any one falling in the rear has but a poor Chance for success. When an animal is killed, the carcass remains on the spot until the return of the owner, after the conclusion of the day's hunt. The skin is then taken off, and with a portion of the hind quarters, is the property of the man who shot the deer or elk, and the remainder is equitably divided among such as have been less successful, or to the widows and orphan children in the camp. The rule is, that while there is any food on hand, it must be distributed to all alike. There was a great abundance of game in the country where we were encamped, so that from twenty to thirty deer were an average day's hunt besides the elk, bear, and other animals killed with fire arms, and beaver and otter taken with traps by the men who were past the age when they could endure the exhausting exercise of deer hunting. I left the camp at an early hour one day to still hunt in a direction different from that to be taken by the Indians. I was successful, and returned to my lodge bearing upon my shoulders the greater part of a young buck. I soon ascertained that there was quite a commotion in the camp. One of the women came to inform me that all the men except five old fellows, who could not travel, had gone down to the forks of the Red Cedar, more262 minnesota historical collections. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Civil Government of Minnesota, And, the Government of the United States That our schools give so little attention to the his tory and civil_ government of Minnesota surprises no one who has given a moment's thought to the fact that the student who would gain anything like an adequate knowledge of these important subjects must make himself familiar with the contents of several bulky volumes prepared for the general reader or for the student of law. In View of this fact it is evident that the study of the history and civil government of our state cannot receive the attention its importance demands until a suitable text-book is placed in the hands of pupils and teachers. To the preparation of such a work the writer has given much time and thought, and this vol ume, Part I and Part II, is the result. It showed beyond a question that many professed representatives of the people were really representatives of the special interests that rob the people through forms of law. The publicity thus secured resulted directly in the retirement or defeat of practically every member of the old special interest serving political gang that had con trolled the legislature for many years. Some retired voluntarily through fear of defeat, some were dropped at primaries and others defeated at general election. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the warmth and humor we've come to know, the creator and host of A Prairie Home Companion shares his own remarkable story. In That Time of Year, Garrison Keillor looks back on his life and recounts how a Brethren boy with writerly ambitions grew up in a small town on the Mississippi in the 1950s and, seeing three good friends die young, turned to comedy and radio. Through a series of unreasonable lucky breaks, he founded A Prairie Home Companion and put himself in line for a good life, including mistakes, regrets, and a few medical adventures. PHC lasted forty-two years, 1,557 shows, and enjoyed the freedom to do as it pleased for three or four million listeners every Saturday at 5 p.m. Central. He got to sing with Emmylou Harris and Renée Fleming and once sang two songs to the U.S. Supreme Court. He played a private eye and a cowboy, gave the news from his hometown, Lake Wobegon, and met Somali cabdrivers who’d learned English from listening to the show. He wrote bestselling novels, won a Grammy and a National Humanities Medal, and made a movie with Robert Altman with an alarming amount of improvisation. He says, “I was unemployable and managed to invent work for myself that I loved all my life, and on top of that I married well. That’s the secret, work and love. And I chose the right ancestors, impoverished Scots and Yorkshire farmers, good workers. I’m heading for eighty, and I still get up to write before dawn every day.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minnesota Legislature of 1911 Second - The United States Steel Corporation whose selfish interest in state government consists largely in escaping the payment of mil lions in taxes and in continuing its opportunity to secure and exploit our mineral resources. Third - The transportation trust which preys upon the public through watered stock and extortionate, discriminative rates. Fourth - A long list of such corporations as the Twin City Rapid Transit Company, the Northwestern Telephone Company, the liability insurance companies and the employers of labor generally. I am not undertaking here to name them all or to designate the legislative axe each had to sharpen for the public, but only to suggest the existence and activity of a great diversity of special interests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota, 1851 to 1861 It may be well to recall that the portion of our state west of the St. Croix river and east of the Mississippi, in which the greater part of the city of St. Paul is located, was originally in the Northwest Territory ceded by Virginia to the United States. Out of that generous cession were created Ohio, Mich igan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and so much of Minne sota as lies between the St. Croix and the Mississippi; but the larger part of this state west of the Mississippi, including Fort Snelling, comes of the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon Bonaparte for fifteen million dollars in 1803. Thus the area of Minnesota's tenure passed through not less than six or eight jurisdictions before it became either a territorial or state unit. Referring to this peculiar fact, General Sibley was wont to remark jocosely, I was successively a citizen of Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota, both state and territory, with out changing my residence at Mendota. The second of the two men living on the military reserva tion in 1851 was Colonel John H. Stevens, a veteran of the Mexican war, the first settler in Minneapolis proper, in 1849, ever a prominent and influential citizen. I well recall his cot tage, a story and a half in height, perched on the very edge of the river bank, and hard-by the landing place of the ferryboat, of which Captain John Tapper was for a long time the able bodied and trusty ferryman. The ferryboat itself was of the primitive character familiar enough to all pioneers, whose running stock consisted of a rope cable stretched from shore to shore, the river's current supply ing the force to drive it to and fro according as the movable keel or side board was raised or lowered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from H. P. Hall's Observations: Being More or Less a History of Political Contests While, as far as they go, my observations are designed to make, when united, a political history, I do not assume to write what might be termed a complete resume of the political events which have transpired in the State of Minnesota. That would involve the publication of a semi-political almanac, which is the farthest from my intention. It has been my aim to confine myself to political contests; not so much between political parties, but rather internecine struggles within the ranks of the party which has been dominant most of the time since the formation of the territory of the State of Minnesota. If the Democrats do not appear as frequently as the Republicans it is because the Republicans have been so much more numerous that they (the Democrats) did not have as much to fight about. As the work has progressed, my greatest dilemma has been to determine what to omit rather than what to tell. I have sought not to invade the grave or unduly disturb the living, and so far as the dead are concerned have largely confined myself to matters made public while they were still alive, as well as quoting from public (though forgotten) records which live forever. I make no apology for the use of the personal pronoun. It probably appears more frequently than any other word in this book. For the most part I can say of what I have written, "all of which I saw and part of which I was," and I accordingly write of things as I saw and understood them at the time of their occurrence. I have aimed to refresh my memory, which is still fairly good and vivid, by reference to newspaper files, largely newspapers of my own, when I recorded events at the time they were current and fresh. Errors have doubtless crept in, but the truth has been stated as carefully as possible, fairly and honestly, without a single intention of misrepresentation. In writing my book no attempt has been made to indulge in stilted rhetoric - just plain newspaper vernacular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Administration: An Address Delivered Before the Women's Democratic Association of Minnesota, May 5, 1921 Now I call this a vital difference because it is the most important distinction to be taken in all things human. The man who is honest because he thinks it right is as far apart as the poles asunder from the man who is honest merely because he thinks it wise. Look at the attitude of the two parties in foreign affairs. The attitude of the Republican party in foreign affairs is based on politics and that of the Democratic party on states manship. Now I do not make that statement as a mere as sertion, for I expect to prove it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir on the History and Physical Geography of Minnesota Turns, in his thoughts, thy course 'twixt sea and sea, And shouts to think that all his tribes are free. Minnesota is the last legislative creation upon its waters, and bids fair, at no distant period, to make one of its noblest States. The area of territory comprised by it is computed by Mr. Darby at a fraction under square miles and it would be ample, in mere area, for the formation of three large States, facing respectively the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, including the residuary portion of Wisconsin, some twenty thousand square miles of which, in consequence of the ordinance of 1787, can never be incorporated into a State by itself, and comprehending, also, the large area lyin g above the mouth of the De Corbeau river, which is, 'in a measure, sphagnous, or arid. For this, we may deduct more square miles, which would reduce it to the com pass of two States of square miles each.
