He goes on to call Thomas Edison's lab, "one of the most important sites in the history of America's industrial development." Kean reminds his audience that New Jersey has more scientists and engineers per capita than any other state. Kean introduces Dr. Robert Bruce Merrifield, was an American biochemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1984 for the invention of solid phase peptide synthesis.

The committee sought to have the state's voters approve a $90 million bond referendum that would be on the November 1984 ballot. The bonds would finance the creation of several advanced technology centers and the upgrading of technical education at public and private colleges. Of the $90 million, $57 million would be used to build the centers, $23 million would finance undergraduate technical and engineering facilities, $7 million would underwrite robotics and engineering training facilities in southern New Jersey and $3 million would be for unspecified ''future needs.''
