Book excerpt: What has been missing from my work, from everyone else's work, from personal stories, from those who interpret personal stories, from experts in religion and spirituality, from the news media, the scientists, the grief-stricken, and the born again . . . is the voice of the collective . . . inside what we all seek to describe. What lies at the heart of near-death experiences? A God that in ways beyond description, smiles at you. Not the God of holy writ, but a Sourceplace--an all-encompassing Oneness, Allness, that, as It breathes, moves skin and bark and wings and stars and babes and rivers and comets and dreams and faces . . . as well as the mustard on your hotdog. The book you have before you releases that collective voice, the sum of millions of people--worldwide--who speak as one. It is nothing less than the proof that everyone on planet Earth, in their own heart, seeks to have: that God exists.

Individuals have been experiencing what it's like to die and come back to life even before Christ resurrected Lazarus and Christ himself. The prospect of immortality has fueled human fancy since the dawn of time and has found various expressions in the worlds of religion, art, mythology, philosophy, and folklore. Detailed stories of what is now known as the Near-Death Experience have been written down through the centuries. While we in the West have been busy ordaining our new clergy, spiritual values in the East have remained unchanged. There, the person is still taught and encouraged to develop a rich inner life. Understanding one's own relationship with the infinite is the most important endeavor. According to new modern scientific thought, a large percentage of Americans, particularly, are conditioned from childhood to value the acquisition of wealth from outside themselves. As a result, many today have very little, if any, internal resources on which to fall back when their material world falls apart. This is especially true when a loved one passes away, or perhaps even more so as these people approach their own mortality. The NDE appears to be a "seed experience" that germinates and unfolds in the individual's life as he gets ready for it upon his "return." This trait alone would suggest that the NDE can be a catalyst for significant personal development, not least the full eradication of the fear of death.

Book excerpt: Messages from The Light makes clear that we are heading for a more wonderful future, but first we must realize that we have grossly neglected the spiritual part of ourselves and have focused too much on our own short-term self-interests. We have created a materialistic "I don't care about you" society. When our physical body dies, our spirit will discover that it does not only belong to our material, four-dimensional world, but also to something that is so much greater, more wonderful, and more thrilling. In this "unity universe," there are no lesser souls—we are all interconnected and connected to the Light, the ultimate unconditional love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of "near-death experiences" show that such experiences not only provide a new certainty of post-mortem survival, but often function as a call for fundamental change in the present. Reported aftereffects encompass changes in attitudes, beliefs, and life orientation. It is said that "experiencers" have lost their fear of death, found their purpose in life, or become "more spiritual." The experience - often declared to be indescribable, inexplicable, or ineffable - is held by many to be the most important of their lives and, moreover, the best proof available for matters "transcendent." In What Is It Like To Be Dead?, Jens Schlieter argues that to understand recent testimonies of near-death experiences, we need to be aware of the history of innumerable reports of earlier near-death experiences that were communicated and handed down in scores of newspapers, journals, and books. Collections of such testimonies have been published for more than 150 years, accompanied by attempts to classify and interpret them. Schlieter analyzes the religious relevance of near-death experiences -for the experiencers themselves, but also for the growing audience attracted by these testimonies. Near-death experiences bear ontological, epistemic, intersubjective, and moral significance, ranging from reassurance that religious experience is still possible to claims that they initiate a new spiritual orientation in life, or offer evidence for the transcultural validity of afterlife beliefs. This study is the first to document and analyze four centuries of near-death testimonies before the codification of the genre in the 1970s, offering the first full account of the modern genealogy of "near-death experiences."

In recent years published accounts of such Near-Death-Experiences (NDEs) have fascinated readers worldwide. Now Light After Death opens an exciting new chapter in the field on NDE research by presenting a comprehensive affirmation of the NDE by an established world religion. Although less than 150 years old, the Baha` I Faith is already the second most widespread religion after Christianity. Its teachings of world unity offer a ray of hope to a planet plagued with religious and ethnic division, and economic and environmental injustice.

Book excerpt: The Science of Religion, Spirituality, and Existentialism presents in-depth analysis of the core issues in existential psychology, their connections to religion and spirituality (e.g., religious concepts, beliefs, identities, and practices), and their diverse outcomes (e.g., psychological, social, cultural, and health). Leading scholars from around the world cover research exploring how fundamental existential issues are both cause and consequence of religion and spirituality, informed by research data spanning multiple levels of analysis, such as: evolution; cognition and neuroscience; emotion and motivation; personality and individual differences; social and cultural forces; physical and mental health; among many others. The Science of Religion, Spirituality, and Existentialism explores known contours and emerging frontiers, addressing the big question of why religious belief remains such a central feature of the human experience. Discusses both abstract concepts of mortality and concrete near-death experiences Covers the struggles and triumphs associated with freedom, self-regulation, and authenticity Examines the roles of social exclusion, experiential isolation, attachment, and the construction of social identity Considers the problems of uncertainty, the effort to discern truth and reality, and the challenge to find meaning in life Discusses how the mind developed to handle existential topics, how the brain and mind implement the relevant processes, and the many variations and individual differences that alter those processes Delves into the psychological functions of religion and science; the influence on pro- and antisocial behavior, politics, and public policy; and looks at the role of spiritual concerns in understanding the human body and maintaining physical health

This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near-death experiences are known around the world and throughout human history. They are sometimes reported by individuals who have revived from a period of clinical death or near-death and they typically feature sensations of leaving the body, entering and emerging from darkness, meeting deceased friends and relatives, encountering beings of light, judgment of one's earthly life, feelings of oneness, and reaching barriers, only to return to the body. Those who have NDEs almost invariably understand them as having profound spiritual or religious significance. In this book, Gregory Shushan explores the relationship between NDEs, shamanism, and beliefs about the afterlife in traditional indigenous societies in Africa, North America, and Oceania. Drawing on historical accounts of the earliest encounters with explorers, missionaries, and ethnologists, this study addresses questions such as: Do ideas about the afterlife commonly originate in NDEs? What role does culture play in how people experience and interpret NDEs? How can we account for cross-cultural similarities and differences between afterlife beliefs? Though NDEs are universal, Shushan shows that how they are actually experienced and interpreted varies by region and culture. In North America, they were commonly valorized, and attempts were made to replicate them through shamanic rituals. In Africa, however, they were largely considered aberrational events with links to possession or sorcery. In Oceania, Micronesia corresponded more to the African model, while Australia had a greater focus on afterlife journey shamanism, and Polynesia and Melanesia showed an almost casual acceptance of the phenomenon as reflected in numerous myths, legends, and historical accounts. This study examines the continuum of similarities and differences between NDEs, shamanism, and afterlife beliefs in dozens of cultures throughout these regions. In the process, it makes a valuable contribution to our knowledge about the origins of afterlife beliefs around the world and the significance of related experiences in human history.

This book contains a selection of inspiring stories from ordinary people who have had extraordinary experiences that have changed the course and direction of their lives and opened each and every one of them to the power of divine love. Recent years have seen a dramatic change of attitude towards NDEs. Unfortunately, the ongoing debates about NDEs have detracted greatly from the very important transformational effects that NDEs have and how empowering they can be for the whole of mankind. The NDE instils knowledge in those who experience it that we are all interconnected and part of one great whole. This book aims to inspire people from all walks of life, creeds, cultures and faiths to the transformational power of the message of NDEs and show how the love experienced during the NDE has the capacity to heal minds, bodies and souls.

This is an academic deconstruction of the NDE, consciousness, human perception, and religion, all intended to derive a meaning or definition for consciousness and determine of consciousness is indeed an infinite thing perceiving a finite universe. If that is the case, then this infinite thing, consciousness, cannot actually reside in a finite domain (you cannot fit an infinite thing inside of a finite container) but must be residing at this very moment in an infinite domain. This description changes the very nature of our 'selves,' our perception of 'self,' and our meaning and presence, or perception of our presence here. PART 1: THE CLINICAL NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE 1.
