Book excerpt: This study examined depression, anxiety, and mixed anxiety-depression in relatio n to health locus of control. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale wa s used to assess depression and anxiety. The Multidimensional Health Locus of Co ntrol (M-HLC) scale was used as a measure of internal and external health locus of control. A total of eighty seven undergraduate students at the American Unive rsity of Beirut were asked to complete the two self-report measures, in addition to a socio-demographic information sheet and a consent form. The order of prese ntation of the instruments was counterbalanced to minimize any potential "order effects". Findings partially supported the hypotheses under investigation. For the total s ample, Depression or anxiety did not significantly correlate with any construct of health locus of control. For the female sub sample, depression correlated pos itively and significantly with Chance Health Locus of control. For the male sub sample, anxiety or depression did not significantly correlate with any construct of health locus of control. The "mixed group" showed significantly higher score s on chance health locus of control, but only for the total sample and female su b sample. The "normal group" showed significantly lower scores on chance health locus of control, but only for the total sample and the female sub sample. Findings on the prevalence of anxiety, depression and mixed anxiety-depression i n the sample as well as other demographic findings, shortcomings of the study an d directions for future research are discussed in length.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical studies of the role of non-cognitive skills in driving economic behavior often rely heavily on the assumption that these skills are stable over the relevant time frame. We analyze the change in a specific non-cognitive skill, i.e. locus of control, in order to directly assess the validity of this assumption. We find that short- and medium-run changes in locus of control are rather modest on average, are concentrated among the young or very old, do not appear to be related to the demographic, labor market, and health events that individuals experience, and are unlikely to be economically meaningful. Still, there is no evidence that locus of control is truly time-invariant implying that the use of lagged measures results in an errors-in-variables problem that could downward bias the estimated wage return to locus of control by as much as 50 percent. Those researchers wishing to analyze the economic consequences of non-cognitive skills should consider (i) restricting their analysis to the working-age population for whom there is little evidence of systematic change in skill levels and (ii) accounting for error in the skill measures they employ.

Book excerpt: In Psychopathology: A Social Neuropsychological Perspective, Lee and Irwin demonstrate that mental distress often defies traditional forms of medical classification. Integrating both psychosocial and neuropsychological frameworks, they present a unique and balanced perspective on psychopathology, emphasising the importance of context, relationships and neuroplasticity. Written to support teaching and learning at the undergraduate level, Psychopathology: A Social Neuropsychological Perspective encourages students to explore alternatives to traditional diagnostic models. Pedagogical features such as reflection points in each chapter encourage critical engagement and classroom debate. The result is an original examination of mental distress and a stand-alone resource for students in this area.

Book excerpt: How Much Do You Believe That What Happens to You Is the Result of Your Own Actions—or Do Circumstances Beyond Your Control Largely Determine Your Fate? Locus of Control (LOC) is a phrase used by psychologists to describe a widely effective way of assessing an individual’s potential for success—personal, social, and financial. LOC measures how much you believe what happens to you is the result of your own actions or, conversely, of forces and circumstances beyond your control. People who accept that they are largely in control of their lives tend to do better than those who feel that fate or external factors rule what they do, especially in novel and difficult situations. This book explains LOC research, until now mainly confined to academic circles, in terms easily understandable to the average person. The author, a clinical psychologist who has spent nearly five decades investigating and writing about LOC, helps the reader to explore his or her own locus of control and what those orientations might mean for how life is lived. He discusses the extensively documented relationship between LOC and academic achievement, personal and social adjustment, health, and financial success. Dr. Nowicki notes that there has been an increasing tendency among Americans to feel as though their lives are slipping out of their control, and he identifies ways to reverse this negative trend. He describes how the Locus of Control is learned and demonstrates ways in which it can be changed to yield higher levels of achievement, success, personal satisfaction, and better interactions with others.

Provided is an assessment of the various ways in which personal control is invoked in a range of health-relevant issues. The current state of knowledge is summarized, and opportunities for new developments are highlighted. Three major sections address the role of control in job settings and its influence on health; the relationship of control to clinical problems such as pain, stress, and heart disease; and the pathways through which control affects behavior and psychobiological responses, from an experimental perspective.

Book excerpt: In the present era of globalization, privatization and liberalization, the entire scenario of the whole world is turned into a global village but the social attitudes, value patterns, conduct, and behavior of people have been radically changed in the inverse direction. Today people live in a money worshipping society which is full of competition with values of consumerism, individualism, materialism, hedonism, sadism and masochism have significantly increased and sensitivity towards others suffering has considerably decreased. Feelings of envy and jealousy toward others are spreading in each society with impersonal relationship, alienation, non consciousness and un- mindfulness which have damaged the person himself. All kinds of insecurities – physical, mental, social etc., have engulfed the psyche of the people who are crazy for more and more materialistic possessions in order to live luxuriously and also to leave the same for generations to come. Today’s men are unnecessarily running from early morning till late at night for minting money and amassing wealth with their never ending lust. Resulting lack of emotional-social support to fellow being has created anxiety, frustration, stress, tension, maladjustment with so many personal and social problems and have disturbed health of the individual to a great extent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 1: Assessment Methods was created to serve two purposes. The first is to fill the researcher's need for information about the application of appropriate locus of control scales to their particular purposes or samples. It presents a variety of locus of control scales and describes the relevant research and applications. The second purpose for this book involves the general field of personality psychology. Often personality constructs emerge, occupy center stage for the better part of a decade, and then almost silently disappear from view. By contrast, the locus of control construct has occupied a central position in personality research for a decade. The contributions to this volume represent some of the innovations that extend the utility of the locus of control construct to different areas of concern. It illustrates a simple principle—that a construct continues to be viable only as long as it continues to inspire innovations; if it remains static the construct will eventually disappear. This book is intended to provide information regarding new developments and to encourage new questions and applications that may allow the locus of control construct to outlive the brief life span that is common among personality constructs. It is assumed that the reader is already familiar with the basic literature on locus of control research.
