Book excerpt: Fire and Ecosystems focuses on a number of aspects of fire ecology. This book deals separately with both harmful and beneficial effects of fire on soils, soil organisms, animals, and plants. This reference material elucidates the effects of fire on grasslands and considers the role of fire in temperate forests and related ecosystems. Four chapters are presented on a regional basis to highlight variations in responses, especially plant succession, to fire. The use of fire in land management is also explored. This book will serve as an invaluable reference material to researchers, teachers, and land managers.

Book Synopsis Manual of Grasses for North America by : Mary E. Barkworth
Download or read book Manual of Grasses for North America written by Mary E. Barkworth and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2007-09-15 with total page 1552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasses are the world’s most important plants. They are the dominant species over large parts of the earth’s land surface, a fact that is reflected in the many different words that exist for grasslands, words such as prairie, veldt, palouse, and pampas to mention just a few. As a group, grasses are of major ecological importance, as soil binders and providers of shelter and food for wild animals, both large and small. Some grasses, such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye, tef, and sugar cane are major sources of calories for humans and their livestock; others, primarily bamboos, are used for construction, tools, paper, and fabric. More recently, the seed catalogs that tantalize gardeners each winter have borne witness to an increasing appreciation of the aesthetic value of grasses. The Manual of Grasses for North America is designed as a successor to the classic volume by Hitchcock and Chase. It reflects current taxonomic thought and includes keys, illustrations, and distribution maps for the nearly 900 native and 400 introduced species that have been found in North America north of Mexico. In addition, it presents keys and illustrations for several species that are known only in cultivation or are of major agricultural significance, either as progenitors of bread wheat and corn or as a major threat to North American agriculture because of their ability to hybridize with crop species. The Manual of Grasses for North America is a major reference work for grasses that will retain its value for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition more than thirty years ago, The Flora of Alberta has become the standard guide for naturalists, botanists, and all those interested in the wildlife of the province. It provides an inventory of 1775 known vascular plant species- ferns, conifers, and flowering plants - that are native to Alberta, or if non-native, that have become established and grow wild int he province. All are grouped according to genus and family, with descriptions of species, genera, and families. Keys are provided to allow for the identification of all the known species, along with information on habitats in which species generally occur. The text for each species includes the chromosome number and indicates the geographical distribution in North America. Also included are 1158 provincial distribution maps, showing the locations of native species, and two specially prepared maps of the province - one indicating the distribution of major soil groups, the other distribution of major vegetation types. In the years since its initial publication The Flora of Alberta has been revised, updated, and considerably expanded while retaining the original format and purpose that have made it indispensable to a wide range of readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In farming systems across Canada, effective risk management is necessary to deal with drought, flooding, and extreme weather, and to adapt to altered climate and weather conditions. Unfortunately, climate change risks and opportunities are not always well understood among researchers and policy makers in the Canadian agri-food sector. This book addresses that gap by providing a wide-ranging synopsis of what climate change means for Canadian agriculture, exploring different approaches to the topic, and presenting examples of current research. It covers all agricultural regions and a wide variety of commodity production and farming systems. This comprehensive survey synthesizes twenty years of research on climate change and Canadian agriculture.
