The title details basic phenomena governing reproductive processes in insects, with the whole spectrum of an insect reproductive cycle. The text first covers insect genitalia, and proceeds to discussing sex determination. Next, the selection talks about the development of unfertilized eggs in insects. The text also deals with gonadal development, along with insect mating behavior. Chapter 7 details the factors that affect egg production and fecundity, while Chapter 8 tackles hormonal control of egg maturation. The ninth chapter covers endocrine influence on reproduction in the male insect. The next chapters discuss oviposition, heterogony, and viviparity. The last two chapters deal with functional hermaphroditism and insect societies, respectively. The book will be of great use to students and researchers in the field of entomology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume III Accessory Sex Glands Edited by K. G. Adiyodi Accessory Sex Glands is the third volume in the encyclopaedic series and provides very valuable information, some hitherto unpublished, on the distribution, structure, origin physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and evolution of the accessory sex glands in different groups of invertebrates. Volumes I and II of this series (published by Wiley) have given detailed accounts of the structure, origin, composition and physiology of female and male gametes and also provided some information on the mechanisms controlling their production. The secretions of accessory sex glands are indispensable for several key aspects of gamete physiology and for successful fertilization and development in many internally fertilizing invertebrates. Interestingly enough, accessory sex gland secretions are produced, in some species at least, under the influence of gonadotrophic hormones as are the gametes themselves. The data on invertebrate accessory sex glands are scattered in various journals and have not been so far collected, critically evaluated and published in book form. This volume thus fills a void and serves as an indispensable corollary and companion to the two volumes that have already appeared on gametology in the series. G. D. May 1976 Part III THEORDERSOFINSECTS THE CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS The classification of insects has passed through many changes and with the growth of detailed knowledge an increasing number of orders has come to be recognized. Handlirsch (1908) and Wilson and Doner (1937) have reviewed the earlier attempts at classification, among which the schemes of Brauer (1885), Sharp (1899) and Borner (1904) did much to define the more distinctive recent orders. In 1908 Handlirsch published a more revolutionary system, incorporating recent and fossil forms, which gave the Collembola, Thysanura and Diplura the status of three independent Arthropodan classes and considered as separate orders such groups as the Sialoidea, Raphidioidea, Heteroptera and Homoptera. He also split up the old order Orthoptera, gave its components ordinal rank and regrouped them with some of the other orders into a subclass Orthopteroidea and another subclass Blattaeformia.

Book excerpt: The aim of the author has been to present an account of the neuroendocrine system of insects, the super importance of which is well established, and also to provide information as far as possible directly, through the ultrastructural illustrations. Besides, an account of some of the hormonally controlled phenomena of vital significance is given. It is hoped that the theoretical account, and a large number of ultrastructural illustrations of some of the prominent pioneer authors included in the book, will provide ample information to the post graduate students and research scholars of insect neuroendocrinology as well as to those engaged in carrying out researches on comparative endocrinology, insect ethology, cell biology and developmental biology in various universities and acquaint them well with almost all the components of the neuroendocrine system in the active, inactive and various developmental stages, alongwith ultrastructural changes occurring in the cells and their organelles, that are associated with specific functions. I do hope that the book will stimulate the readers and serve as a "text book cum basic research monograph'' on the subject. The book also contains a list of selected bibliography for a detailed study.

May 1976 R.G.D. Part I ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY Chapter I INTRODUCTION Definition of the Insecta (Hexapoda) The insects are tracheate arthropods in which the body is divided into head, thorax and abdomen. A single pair of antennae (homologous with the anten nules of the Crustacea) is present and the head also bears a pair of mandibles and two pairs of maxillae, the second pair fused medially to form the labium. The thorax carries three pairs of legs and usually one or two pairs of wings. The abdomen is devoid of ambulatory appendages, and the genital opening is situated near the posterior end of the body. Postembryonic development is rarely direct and a metamorphosis usually occurs.

Book excerpt: Literature on the population dynamics of insect herbivores tends to favour a top-down regulation of abundance, owing much to the action of natural enemies. Originally published in 2005, this volume challenges this paradigm and argues that tree-dwelling species of aphids, through competition for resources, regulate their own abundance. The biology of tree-dwelling aphids is examined, particularly their adaptation to the seasonal development of their host plants. When host-plant quality is favourable, aphids, by telescoping generations, can achieve prodigious rates of increase which their natural enemies are unable to match. Using analyses of long-term population censuses and results of experiments, this book introduces students and research workers to insect herbivore-host dynamics using the interaction between aphids and trees as a model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insecticide Mode of Action presents significant research on the biological activity of insecticides. The book is organized into three sections encompassing 13 chapters that summarize three major groups of insecticides, including neurotoxic, formamidine, and developmental insecticides. The first section of the book presents studies on groups of conventional neurotoxic insecticides: chlorinated hydrocarbons, pyrethroids, carbamates, and organophosphorus chemicals. This text discusses their structure, poisoning property, structure-activity relationships, and stereoselectivity. The subsequent section discusses the biochemical, biological, and neurotoxic actions of formamidines, a group of pesticides that exhibit an unusual spectrum of activity. Several modes of action of pharmacological significance as well as some important behavioral effects are included in this section. The third section addresses groups of insecticides that affect insect growth and development. Such chemicals typically demonstrate marked selectivity and represent more sophisticated strategies in the chemical control of insect pests. This book is of value to researchers, teachers, and regulatory personnel concerned with the biological activity of insecticides.

Book excerpt: This volume details the origins and history of insect endocrinology, from its remarkably intuitive beginnings, through the occasionally circuitous, but ultimately successful, investigations by several generations of endocrinologists who have progressively transformed the field to one characterized by vigor, enthusiasm, and scientific excellence. From the opening chapter by the founder of the field, Sir Vincent Wigglesworth, documenting the origins of this science, to the chapter defining the new investigative area of comparative vertebrate-invertebrate endocrinology, this volume, augmented by volume 8 of this series, presents the evolution of insect endocrinology up to the most recent discoveries with a level of detail that makes it an unsurpassed resource for today's endocrinologist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of insect neurohormones dates from the earliest experimental in vestigations in insect endocrines, and the matter cannot be discussed without evoking the names of its pioneers-Kopec, Wigglesworth, Fraenkel. Whereas the experiments demonstrated the existence of the first known neurohormones, the formulation of the concept of neurosecretion was of fundamental importance to further progress, and tribute must be paid to Ernst and Berta Scharrer. The recent proliferation of investigations into insect neurohormones has cre ated the need for an overall review of the data. Our knowledge of the subject is voluminous, and the evidence clearly demonstrates that neurohormones playa part in most insect regulatory processes. This book analyzes and synthesizes the data, starting from neurosecretion (i.e., source sites and release modes of neurohormones) and continuing through the various functions in which neurohormones have been shown to be involved: endocrine gland activity; diapause; reproduction; visceral muscle functioning; color change; behavior; water and ion balance; protein, sugar, and lipid metabo lism; and tanning and other processes occurring at the cuticle level. In each chapter, besides the experimental information, technical procedures as well as recent information concerning purification of the particular neurohor mones and their mode of action are reported. Numerous exhaustive tables allow the reader to get an overview of the matter while the major findings of the mo ment are presented in the conclusion of each chapter.
