Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Register of the Officers and Alumni, 1873-1904 This is the first General Register to be published by the University. It is intended to give a concise history of the person nel of the University, as to officers, faculty, and graduates, from the date of organization to July 1, 1904. The information has been obtained from many sources, but principally from the persons named in the volume, the records of the Secretary of the Board of Regents, the University catalogues, and the records of the Alumni Association. The officers and members of the Board of Regents have been arranged in order of appointment, or election; the officers of administration, according to the plan of the Annual Catalogue; and the officers of instruction, on the basis of seniority. The data concerning each officer is limited to his career in the Uni versity of Oregon. In the list of the Alumni appear the names of the graduates of the old Normal Course, abolished in 1884. By formal act of the Board of Regents in June 1890, the degree of B. S. Was con ferred on all graduates of the Normal Course. The English Course had but one graduate. The degrees of B. L. And B. S. D. Have been conferred only once (1897) in the history of the University. The B. L. Degree was conferred on three graduates of the class of 1897 for the completion of the four-year Literary Course. The B. S. D. Degree was given to six graduates of a short course in Scientific Didactics. The present volume contains the names of all graduates of the University, including the class of 1904. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Catalogue of the Non-Graduates of Williams College, 1910 The names of non - graduates who have received honorary de grees from the College are not included here but are inserted in the General Catalogue of Graduates. A name which appears in the annual catalogues in more than one class is recorded with the original list. In a few cases in which a name reappears after an interval, without sufficient identity, it has been repeated to avoid possible omissions. Thanks are due to the alumni, private individuals and to aca demic and civil officials everywhere for their courteous responses to requests for information. Particular thanks are due to the members of the Library stafi for their assistance in the clerical labor involved in compilation. The chief obligation of the editor, however, is to the zeal and interest of William T. R. Marvin, L. H. D., Class of 1854, whose wide acquaintance with Williams alumni has made him a source of information, suggestion and material help, which it is a pleasure to acknowledge. This catalogue aims to present in brief form the academic record of all non-graduates, but as most of the data here contained have been brought together for the first time from printed and manuscript records, many of which are conflicting, errors are nu avoidable. Corrections or additions to these entries are cordially requested. These should be sent to the College Library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Register of the Officers and Alumni, 1892-1902 This is the first General Register to be published by the University. It is intended to give a concise history of the personnel of the University for the first ten years, closing with July 1, 1902. In addition to the data obtained directly from the persons named in the volume, much information was found in the reports of the Secretary of the Board of Trustees; the Auditor's accounts the records in the Recorder's office the Annual Registers the University Record; the student publications, and the University Scrap Book in the General Library. The officers of instruction and administration have been arranged as far as possible according to the plan adopted in the Annual Register. Members of the faculties have been arranged on the basis of rank and seniority. Those who have offered courses during the Summer Quarters only are placed after the names of the permanent officers. The data concerning each officer is limited to his career as a member of the faculties of the University of Chicago. In the list of collegiate alumni appear the names of the graduates of the old University of Chicago from 1861 to 1886. By formal act of the Board of Trustees on February 2, 1891, the degrees of a.b. And sb. Conferred by the old University were confirmed and re-enacted by the new University, thus making these graduates alumni of the present institution. On July 13, 1891, the Baptist Union Theological Semi nary became the Divinity School of the University, and the graduates of the Seminary became alumni of the new Divinity School. With the name of each honorary alumnus has been published the statement used at the time the degree was conferred. The present volume contains all graduates up to July 1, 1902. All students graduating after July 1 of one year and before July 1 of the next year are enrolled as graduates of the latter year. The names of all persons who received appointments as officers of administration and instruction or as fellows before July 1, 1902, are included under their respective departments. However, we must be prepared, and without fear, to admit that the private dollar is simply not adequate to support some phases of higher educa tion, and this is especially true in medical education and medical research. I cannot accept the approach whereby one fears appropriate federal support on one hand and makes every effort to get it on the other. Let us be honest and acknowledge that ways have been found since the land-grant act of 1862 to reconcile local interests and federal responsibility. A great deal may be at stake in higher education, in being candid with ourselves in this regard. Each university or other institution will have to subject itself to a rigid examination as to which of the available federal funds fits into the institutional pro gram and policies. After all, if institutional integrity is absent we cannot expect the Federal government to supply a substitute for our conscience. All that I have been saying has been by way of summary. I have not sought to twist our recent history into a glowing story of unparalleled success. Of course we have made progress. We would be ashamed if we had not. But no one believes that we have been able to do all that we like. This is the position we must take as we plan for. The future. Book excerpt: A Pulitzer Prize–winning historian’s "breathtakingly original" (Junot Diaz) reinterpretation of the eight decades surrounding the Civil War. "Capatious [and] buzzing with ideas." --The Boston Globe Volume 3 in the Penguin History of the United States, edited by Eric Foner In this ambitious story of American imperial conquest and capitalist development, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Steven Hahn takes on the conventional histories of the nineteenth century and offers a perspective that promises to be as enduring as it is controversial. It begins and ends in Mexico and, throughout, is internationalist in orientation. It challenges the political narrative of “sectionalism,” emphasizing the national footing of slavery and the struggle between the northeast and Mississippi Valley for continental supremacy. It places the Civil War in the context of many domestic rebellions against state authority, including those of Native Americans. It fully incorporates the trans-Mississippi west, suggesting the importance of the Pacific to the imperial vision of political leaders and of the west as a proving ground for later imperial projects overseas. It reconfigures the history of capitalism, insisting on the centrality of state formation and slave emancipation to its consolidation. And it identifies a sweeping era of “reconstructions” in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that simultaneously laid the foundations for corporate liberalism and social democracy. The era from 1830 to 1910 witnessed massive transformations in how people lived, worked, thought about themselves, and struggled to thrive. It also witnessed the birth of economic and political institutions that still shape our world. From an agricultural society with a weak central government, the United States became an urban and industrial society in which government assumed a greater and greater role in the framing of social and economic life. As the book ends, the United States, now a global economic and political power, encounters massive warfare between imperial powers in Europe and a massive revolution on its southern border―the remarkable Mexican Revolution―which together brought the nineteenth century to a close while marking the important themes of the twentieth.
