Book excerpt: An anniversary gives us the opportunity to recognize the deeds of our predecessors, take pride in our heritage, show gratitude for our victories, reflect on our losses, and review the past with the benefit of the longer perspective of history. Each generation tends to see the past in terms of its own experience. History both illuminates what has lain hidden and reinforces what we know. For its 1995 observance of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II, the Air Force History and Museums Program sponsored a series of commemorative events. One, a National Day of Recognition for Veterans of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), held on August 7th in the Washington, D.C. area, was celebrated at three locations. First, at the Pentagon's center court, Secretary of the Air Force Sheila E. Widnall and Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Ronald R. Fogleman, praised the veterans' numberless contributions to Allied victory in the war. The Air Force Historian, Richard P. Hallion, read a congressional resolution marking the day and then Lieutenant Colonel Donald S. Lopez, USAF, retired, spoke on behalf of all World War II airmen. A flyover by vintage USAAF aircraft capped the festivities. During the afternoon in a symposium at the National Archives and Records Administration, eleven USAAF veterans, in separate sessions covering the conflicts in Europe and Asia, reflected on their own wartime experiences of half a century ago. They spoke with clarity and authority and in remarkable detail on such topics as military preparedness, leadership, training, racial segregation, the treatment of American prisoners of war, military technology, the Allied invasion of Japan, and the use of atomic weapons. Historians Richard G. Davis and William T. Y'Blood presented overviews at the respective sessions. That evening, the Daughters of the American Revolution gave a reception in honor of the symposium participants and opened Constitution Hall for an outstanding musical tribute, which was performed before a packed house by the United States Air Force Band. Dr. Hallion, joined by General Bryce Poe, II, president of the Air Force Historical Foundation, hosted the symposium. Reminiscences and remarks are faithfully preserved herein.

Download or read book Air Apaches written by Jay Stout and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian and aviator Jay Stout follows up his spellbinding account of the U.S. 303rd Bomb Group—Hell’s Angels—with the equally remarkable story of the Air Apaches in the Pacific. Air Apaches reconstructs the war of the 345th Bomb Group in impressively painstaking detail, capturing what it was like to be one of the young men flying low-level bombing and strafing missions and—if the missions weren’t dangerous enough—facing such challenges as kamikaze attacks and, if a pilot was shot down, primitive jungle conditions and a sword-brandishing enemy who did not treat downed airmen by the letter of the Geneva Convention. Air Apaches is more than the story of one unit in aerial combat in World War II. It is the story of men at war across all of history.
Book Synopsis Veterans Reflections by : William R. Graser
Download or read book Veterans Reflections written by William R. Graser and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military service of millions of Americans is reflected in these stories. They will put you in the middle of the action of our nation’s wars. Through firsthand accounts of veterans who served during World War II, the Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War, the Quiet War, and Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan); you’ll find yourself paying tribute to each and every veteran. The stories of personal sacrifice, commitment, and valor demonstrate the values that have made the United States of America the envy of the world. Sixty veterans recall their time in uniform, sharing stories that are both funny and heart wrenching. These stories provide an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding and appreciation of veterans. Celebrate what is means to be an American devoted to freedom with Veterans’ Reflections. As a veteran himself, the author is obviously very close to this work, and it shows not only in his passion for his subject, but also in his attention to detail. His method, which weaves the veterans’ own stories into an historical overview of a specific conflict, is extremely effective. The soldiers’ accounts go well beyond the war’s scorecard and reveal some of the actual fears and experiences of the participants. Anyone can tell the facts behind a story, but those who have lived it can share insights no secondhand history can match. — The US Review of Books

Book Synopsis In Defense of Freedom by : Wolfgang W. E. Samuel
Download or read book In Defense of Freedom written by Wolfgang W. E. Samuel and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-seven stories in this book serve as a graphic reminder of the selfless heroism of America's World War II Army Air Forces flyers and how necessary they were to achieve Allied victory. Wolfgang Samuel and the pilots he interviewed reveal the peril these men faced to achieve a daunting task, impossible without their bravery. And their sacrifices were stunning--American bomber crews suffered the highest casualties (KIA, MIA, POW, wounded) of all American armed services in World War II. The stories preserved in this book bear that grave danger out. A member of a heavy bomber crew in the 8th Air Force in the period from mid-1942 to spring 1944 was less likely to survive than a US Marine fighting on Iwo Jima or Okinawa. The stories in this unique book are about men who went face to face with their adversaries, who saw their buddies die, who crashed planes, and who became prisoners of war. Many later went on to become the backbone of the postwar Air Force, serving in Korea and Vietnam and during the Cold War. Young Ken Chilstrom led a flight of eight A-36 fighter bombers on a low-level foray in Italy. Only he and two others came home. Bob Hoover thought he could take on the entire German air force, but on his first mission he was shot down, nearly perished, and suffered the remainder of the war in a prisoner-of-war camp. Wolfgang Samuel's new book is all about men like Ken, Bob, and the many friends they lost, who saw World War II through to the end and gave freedom to so many others.
