Book excerpt: Abe, Son of Abraham begins as a series of well written and funny vignettes about the author's early years and his special relationship with his father. It concludes with remembrances of his uncles and aunts, immigrants from Lebanon. In between are stories of adventures of hitchhiking in Europe, serving in the Army in the Far East and traveling in the Middle East. The title derives from the fact that Abe and Abraham are Junior and Senior, leading to the book's dedication to the father whose influence permeated the life of the junior. Abe J. Bassett is Emeritus Professor of Theatre Arts at Wright State University, and former Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. He writes about his academic career and how his Theatre Arts department became the most outstanding undergraduate program in Ohio. Earlier he edited and published Memories of Rahija, stories of his mother. Altogether in 296 pages there are 55 entries in ten sections.

"An important, firsthand document for readers who wish to understand this seminal writer and thinker." —Booklist In the spring of 1957, when he was eighty-one years old, Carl Gustav Jung undertook the telling of his life story. Memories, Dreams, Reflections is that book, composed of conversations with his colleague and friend Aniela Jaffé, as well as chapters written in his own hand, and other materials. Jung continued to work on the final stages of the manuscript until shortly before his death on June 6, 1961, making this a uniquely comprehensive reflection on a remarkable life. Fully corrected, this edition also includes Jung's VII Sermones ad Mortuos.

Book excerpt: A playful, witty, reflective memoir of childhood by the science fiction master Stanisław Lem. With Highcastle, Stanisław Lem offers a memoir of his childhood and youth in prewar Lvov. Reflective, artful, witty, playful—“I was a monster,” he observes ruefully—this lively and charming book describes a youth spent reading voraciously (he was especially interested in medical texts and French novels), smashing toys, eating pastries, and being terrorized by insects. Often lonely, the young Lem believed that he could communicate with household objects—perhaps anticipating the sentient machines in the adult Lem's novels. Lem reveals his younger self to be a dreamer, driven by an unbridled imagination and boundless curiosity. In the course of his reminiscing, Lem also ponders the nature of memory, innocence, and the imagination. Highcastle (the title refers to a nearby ruin) offers the portrait of a writer in his formative years.

Book excerpt: This book studies the diverse array of species of memory in Buddhism. Contributors focus on a particular school, group of texts, terms, or practices and identify a considerable range of types of mnemonic faculties in Buddhism. Included are discussions of Buddhist teaching, meditation, visualization, prayer, commemoration of the Buddha, dha?rani practice, the use of mnemonic lists to condense lengthy scriptures, and the purported recollection of infinite previous lives that immediately preceded Sakyamuni's attainment of Buddhahood. Even enlightened awareness itself is said by some Buddhist schools to consist in a "mnemic engagement" with reality as such. The authors explore Buddhist views on mundane acts of memory such as recognizing, reminding, memorizing, and storing data as well as special types of memory that are cultivated in religious practice. One of the most striking discoveries is that perception is intimately related to certain types of memory. Several essays investigate if, and if so, how, meditative mindfulness and recollection of the past--both of which can be designated by the term smrti--are connected within the Buddhist tradition. The question of whether recollection of the past can be explained without violating the foundational Buddhist notions of radical impermanence and no-self is addressed by several of the contributing scholars. Among the primary sources for the studies in this volume are the northern and southern Abhidharma literature, the Ma?tka?s, Pa?li and Maha?ya?na su?tras, works of the Buddhist logicians, Yoga?ca?ra materials, the Tibetan Great Perfection (Rdzogschen) tradition, and Indian and Tibetan commentarial works. Affinities of Buddhist views on memory with those found in Western phenomenology, semiology, psychology, and history of religions are considered as well.

This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former Army Captain, Joseph W. DiLeonardo takes us on a personal journey that spans a century. You are introduced to his family and follow their lives from Italy and the "dust bowl" of Kansas to Sunnyvale, California, where Joseph and his siblings were born and raised. You are presented with the "greatest generation" who won World War II and returned America to a land of peace and plenty. From this society came the "citizen soldier," who would fight, die, be wounded, and emotionally scarred by the first war America lost. There are comparisons between America when Joseph was young, and America as it evolved after the Viet Nam War. As a veteran, a lawyer, a father, and husband filled with remembrances, Joseph uses every opportunity to make comparisons and espouse strong opinions. The focal point of the book is the 13 months and 12 days, Joseph served in Viet Nam. The premise of the book is that the Viet Nam War was the defining moment for America. He now recalls in a detailed account of his service as the Order of Battle Section Chief for the Americal Division. He relates as a witness and participant. He reflects in the present, with his opinions and recommendations about the Viet Nam War, war in general and the direction of America. We follow a young officer as he moves from a new and naive leader to a driven aggressive intelligence chief. That change comes with his first intelligence assessment for the Summer Campaign in 1969. That campaign was one of the largest battles for the Americal Division and arguably the most important in affecting the outcome of the War. The young Captain saw the real tragedy of war: his assessment was disregarded and soldiers died. It changed him. We share a visit from the CIA station chief; the initial investigation into the My Lai Massacre; the planning stages to launch President Nixon's "secret plan to end the war"; the early studies to determine women's role in war; the first release of American POW's; the first use of "computers" for

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communist revolutions in this century have suppressed existing ritual and symbolic structures and invented new ones. Armed with new flags, new national celebrations, or new school textbooks, they have attempted to reconstruct social memory. This fascinating work of political anthropology examines the case of Laos from the heady days of the 1975 revolution to the more sober "post-socialist" present. Grant Evans traces the attempt at ritual and symbolic change in Laos, and the recent reemergence of older and deeper cultural structures, while identifying what has perhaps been irretrievably lost. In this challenging study of the cultural consequences of failed total revolution, Evans reaches some striking conclusions concerning the nature of social memory, cultural possibilities foregone, and the need for cultural continuity.

Book excerpt: The towering twentieth century thinker delve into literature, philosophy, and his own life experience in this “extraordinary collection” (Publishers Weekly). A companion volume to Illuminations, the first collection of Walter Benjamin’s writings, Reflections presents a further sampling of his wide-ranging work. Here Benjamin evolves a theory of language as the medium of all creation, discusses theater and surrealism, reminisces about Berlin in the 1920s, recalls conversations with Bertolt Brecht, and provides travelogues of various cities, including Moscow under Stalin. Benjamin moves seamlessly from literary criticism to autobiography to philosophical-theological speculations, cementing his reputation as one of the greatest and most versatile writers of the twentieth century. “This book is just that: reflections of a highly polished mind that uncannily approximate the century’s fragments of shattered traditions.” —Time
