Reflecting Subjects begins with a close examination of Hume's use of an experimental method to explain the origin, nature and effects of pride, an indirect passion that reflects a person's sense of self-worth in virtue of her valuable qualities, for example, her character or wealth. In explaining the origin of pride in terms of efficient causes, Hume displaces the traditional appeal to final causes, and is positioned to give an account of the significance for us of the passions in terms of a social theory. Subsequent chapters reconstruct this social theory, looking in particular at how the principle of sympathy functions to transmit cultural meanings and values, before examining Hume's account of social power—especially with regard to rank and sex. Turning to Hume's system of ethics, Taylor argues for the importance of Hume's more sophisticated moral philosophy in his Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals, since it emphasizes certain virtues of good moral evaluation. She demonstrates that the principle of humanity stands as the central concept of Hume's Enlightenment philosophy.

The focus of the department is logic broadly conceived, philos ophy of science, in particular of the social sciences, and linguistics. To mark the inauguration of the department, a daylong celebration was held on April 5, 1986. This celebration consisted of two keynote addresses by Patrick Sup pes and Thomas Schwartz, seminars directed by members of the department, and a panel discussion on the computational model of mind moderated by Dana S. Scott. The various contributions, in modified and expanded form, are the core of this collection of essays, and they are, I believe, of more than parochial interest: they turn attention to substantive and reflective interdis ciplinary work. The collection is divided into three parts. The first part gives perspec tives (i) on general features of the interdisciplinary enterprise in philosophy (by Patrick Suppes, Thomas Schwartz, Herbert A. Simon, and Clark Gly mour), and (ii) on a particular topic that invites such interaction, namely computational models of the mind (with contributions by Gilbert Harman, John Haugeland, Jay McClelland, and Allen Newell). The second part con tains (mostly informal) reports on concrete research done within that enter prise; the research topics range from decision theory and the philosophy of economics through foundational problems in mathematics to issues in aes thetics and computational linguistics. Yet lessons embedded in these experiences are not always obvious. This comprehensive book describes a critical yet under-researched element of how managers learn from these experiences: reflection. Today's workplace demands continual learning, which in turn requires reflection. While this book supports the prevailing view that reflection is central to experiential learning, it challenges the traditional views that it is the same as contemplation, that it is incompatible with management, and that it is time-consuming and unnatural for managers. Original quantitative and qualitative research reported in this book indicates that two different yet complementary modes of managerial reflection exist: active and proactive. Active reflection is something that managers naturally engage in during challenging job experiences, whereas managers must be prompted to engage in proactive reflection. Both modes involve processes of intentional inquiry. Different forces are necessary to stimulate each type of reflection. Based on these findings, the claim is made that the potential to learn from experience is greatest when managers intentionally engage in both modes. Accordingly, a holistic model that integrates active and proactive reflection is presented. This model has important implications for theorists and researchers of managerial learning by identifying previously unreported aspects of reflection. It is also relevant to practitioners and companies who desire to enhance what their managers learn from their workplace experience.
